I started life as trilingual, I spoke my first words at 10 months, and I definitely understood all of them by age two, but I would mix up the languages a lot, something I still struggle with as an adult, but now I speak 9 languages. I'm autistic though (which I wasn't diagnosed with until 25), so I'm thinking that could have helped with this, but I do know that the earlier you start, the easier it is for children to learn multiple languages.

Good evening Emma, Thank you for what you're doing with this platform, I have learnt 1 or 2 from here. Please I have a concern, when I gave birth to my second son, I didn't know he had a tongue tie, now he is 17months old, I just notice until I stumbled on a jotter where I recorded his older brother's progress, took him to the paediatrician and a tongue release was done after ENT confirmed its a tongue tie. So it been a month since that procedure was done and he has still not said a thing, not even mama. Please I don't know if your community can help with anything I can do, truth be told I can't afford a speech therapist right now. Are there things I can do to help this processes? It's really disturbing that he wants to say something to us and his voice isn't heard.

Yes i also want a video on how to help baby stand up... That will be very helpful
@EmmaHubbard3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and make a video on this soon. In the meantime if you are holding her in standing then you would initially provide support underneath the arm pits (going across her chest with one arm) and then with your other arm I would either place it on her hips or knees depending on where she needs support (again the arm would wrap around the front of her hip or knees). When you just provide support under the arm pits or hips (one hand on either side of her hips or arm pits) you encourage your baby to bounce on her toes - we want the feet to be flat on the ground when standing. Holding her under the arm pits when she wants to walk is also better than holding her hands. By holding her underneath the arm pit you are giving her more support. Floor time continues to be important at this age.

Each person speaks to the child only in their language...at least that's what I saw in a documentary on language development in babies lol. So what one family did was the dad always only spoke French while the mom only spoke English. They baby learns just fine, it doesn't confuse them.

I second that statement. I have seen that suggestion as well. One parent is responsible for each language so the child will not get confused.

I am German and my husband is American. We both speak our mother tongue to our 5 months old daughter only. I'm also very particular about not reading English books to her (which sometimes poses the logistic issue: How do I get German children's books living here in the USA?) and I translate everything daddy says to her in German as well. Since I am the primary caregiver and communicate a lot more with my baby, I'm certain, she's going to be speaking German first.

7 weeks and he's already mimicking sounds and gestures freakishly well. We are doomed 😂 after sleeping his 6hrs at night, he quietly babbles endlessly to himself until breakfast comes. Same with his random 3am awakening, it's like he's telling himself a bedtime story to go back to sleep. I let him be at night unless he calls for me.

Hi Emma, I am starting to worry as I am browsing through my baby's videos for the past 6 months, she seems more talkative at around 2-3 months compared to present (6 months). She can, however, express varying emotions (happy, discontent, etc)

Did they check the ears? Kids stop bubbeling around half a year when they don t hear well. Can’t say anything from distant and also I m not a doctor but I m a speech therapist and that could be a reason. If you re worried, talk to your doc about it :)!

The training I've done in literacy and language acquisition doesn't align with what you're saying here. I'm just wondering which studies indicate that you should reduce the words you use when speaking to a baby?

I just watched and wonder the same and my assumption would be that you keep it simple for the baby to learn first basic vocabulary and then build language from there. It makes sense for me since that is the approach I took when learning English, first I learned simple words before I leaned full phrases or sentence structure. What is your input?

most of this I already do but still my 12m old only says : "that"( in my language it's two words instead of one) which I know that is great that he can say these words, but I'm kind of worried that he skipped the basics like mama, dada and other words 😕

I do all of this and have been through speech therapy with my last child, so I am confident that my I will be able to manage well with my new baby, but my husbands family has actively shown with my 16month old niece that they would rather laugh and post videos of the limited speaking ability or grunts and silly noises over encouraging speech development. Both my eldest children started speaking around 9 months with about 10 simple words, like mum dad dog bird up food wet, before they each turned 1. So it is mu plan to keep my daughter away from my husbands family as much as I need to so she can learn speech correctly. Personally I don't know why they are not more concerned that my niece only says hey, mum, dad and up

Our family's (meaning my mom's, and what I tend to do naturally with babies) approach is slightly different. We speak to babies like we would with an adult, but slowlier, and we describe everything to them. For example, when changing a nappy : "Oh, your nappy is wet, let's take it off. I undo the Velcro and take the nappy off. Now, I am cleaning you with a wipe. Does it feel good ? See, I am putting a dry one under your bum. Now I am closing the nappy using the Velcro. Let us put our pajamas on. We put the left arm in the left sleeve, and the right arm in the right sleeve. Etc." The interaction feels very intimate for babies, as we look them in the eyes and smile while talking. Mundane tasks become a bonding moment and they learn our language in the process.

Please make a vdo how to teach then talk and from which age do they start. This vdo isn't so clear I do all this with my baby she understands everything but hasn't started talking she is 19 months

Hi Christina the strategies in this video will help your little one learn the words so that when she is ready to talk she will be able to. In regards to your question about when do we expect kids to start talking. The general recommendation is that at 12 months of age they will generally say their first word and according to the CDC by 18 months of age they will be able to say three or more words besides “mama” or “dada”. If you are concerned about your child's language development the first thing I would recommend is getting a hearing assessment completed and arranging an appointment with a speech pathologist (AKA speech and language therapist) to see if there is a reason your little one is not yet using her words to communicate and get individualised tips.

My baby is 17 month old. She is not pointing or using gestures instead of multiple repetitions. She is Papa or Dada but rarely Mama. She is unable to do simple gestures like come, go, give me ball..
