In this video I show you how to encourage your baby to talk. I also cover what you should avoid if you want to get your baby to talk. These strategies are also great to help your toddler say their first words.
When our baby's say their first words it is super exciting! But as parents we are often unsure of what we can do to teach our baby to talk. Did you know that there are some really simple things you can do during your day to teach your baby to talk? The good news is baby's are very good communicators but there are small tweaks we can do throughout our day to help our baby start talking. Some of these tips we automatically do but some tips we definitely need to be taught.

Hey Yana, a few books out there that can get you started. The most difficult part I found is overcoming our own biases and limiting beliefs and those books help you expanding your horizons. (Btw we are raising trilingual baby and I am not English native speaker )

@@EmmaHubbard yes please!. What do I teach him?. For the short words?. For milk?or "Leche"?(spanish). I am giving this example as we are in the UK, I don't want people to later not understand him in the nursery if he is asking for milk in Spanish. Also English has less syllabus than Spanish (so easy words for my baby to learn) but I want him to learn my language as well.

I'm establishing playtime with my 7months old baby. I went through your playlist (from appropriate toys for his age, do's and don'ts, etc). I observed yesterday that he's able to communicate more during our playtime. Like, yesterday we were playing his rainbow tower toy, and I purposedly hide the toy, he made a sound like he's protesting 😅 and so we continued playing. Your videos greatly help me as a FTM. Thank you! 😊🤗

I just want to say thank you for your videos. My children are grown and I have a granddaughter and now an infant grandson, and I have been watching your videos to try and help me understand and learn. My kids were early talkers and maintained a high vocabulary, but my granddaughter was a late talker. She is 4 years old and really only started really talking about a year or year and a half ago. Now with my grandson, and him living with me, I want to make sure that I am giving him the best I can. Thank you.

I have been a trained ESL educator for 15 years. I work to teach English to adults who speak other languages. Many of these techniques are used in my field of work. We always start with nouns and verbs. It is also more effective to start with speech as opposed to writing.

I started life as trilingual, I spoke my first words at 10 months, and I definitely understood all of them by age two, but I would mix up the languages a lot, something I still struggle with as an adult, but now I speak 9 languages. I'm autistic though (which I wasn't diagnosed with until 25), so I'm thinking that could have helped with this, but I do know that the earlier you start, the easier it is for children to learn multiple languages.

7 weeks and he's already mimicking sounds and gestures freakishly well. We are doomed 😂 after sleeping his 6hrs at night, he quietly babbles endlessly to himself until breakfast comes. Same with his random 3am awakening, it's like he's telling himself a bedtime story to go back to sleep. I let him be at night unless he calls for me.

Great suggestion! I will try and do a video on this soon. It really depends on what sleep training method you're comfortable with (which you can start at 6 months). They will still wake in the night for a feed which is totally normal but you can move to getting them to learn to fall asleep without a feed during the day and when they first go down at night. I do have a video on catnapping which covers some sleep tips which might be helpful. This is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGbUgomhhNmjjpY

Can you please do a video on this - my baby is 8 months and wants to stand, she obviously doesn't have strength but wants to stand and walk with my support. Is it ok to let her or will that hamper natural development? And where to hold her - under armpits or waist? My family holds the hands and I feel thats not safe

Yes i also want a video on how to help baby stand up... That will be very helpful
@EmmaHubbard

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try and make a video on this soon. In the meantime if you are holding her in standing then you would initially provide support underneath the arm pits (going across her chest with one arm) and then with your other arm I would either place it on her hips or knees depending on where she needs support (again the arm would wrap around the front of her hip or knees). When you just provide support under the arm pits or hips (one hand on either side of her hips or arm pits) you encourage your baby to bounce on her toes - we want the feet to be flat on the ground when standing. Holding her under the arm pits when she wants to walk is also better than holding her hands. By holding her underneath the arm pit you are giving her more support. Floor time continues to be important at this age.

I don't know why my baby didn't sounds like other newborn and using newborn language. Instead he called me, "mbu" everytime he want me near him. Mbu is how I want to be called, it means mother in my language. He started babbling at 4 months and started pointing at 7 months. I'm so obsessed to teach him speaking rather than walking.

Hi Emma, my 5 month old can roll over, sit up without support. She even reaches to her sides to grab toys with pre crawling movements. But she moves in circles during tummy time but only to the left. Is this normal I’ve tried to entice her with toys on the right but she just gets frustrated and turns to the left. Should I be concerned?

My baby preferred her right and it ended up being hip dysplasia. Most of the time asymmetrical movement is normal but sometimes it can indicate that something is not quite right.

Hi Emma! At what age we expect the baby to talk? My daughter is 1 year and 3 months old and a professional said that she should be speaking 50 words…
@juliadietze4759

Give her time. I m a speech therapist and kids are expected to speak around 50 words when they are two. With two should be coming a word explosion. So don’t worry, she is still pretty young.

I do all of this and have been through speech therapy with my last child, so I am confident that my I will be able to manage well with my new baby, but my husbands family has actively shown with my 16month old niece that they would rather laugh and post videos of the limited speaking ability or grunts and silly noises over encouraging speech development. Both my eldest children started speaking around 9 months with about 10 simple words, like mum dad dog bird up food wet, before they each turned 1. So it is mu plan to keep my daughter away from my husbands family as much as I need to so she can learn speech correctly. Personally I don't know why they are not more concerned that my niece only says hey, mum, dad and up

Each person speaks to the child only in their language...at least that's what I saw in a documentary on language development in babies lol. So what one family did was the dad always only spoke French while the mom only spoke English. They baby learns just fine, it doesn't confuse them.
@crystalgale15

I second that statement. I have seen that suggestion as well. One parent is responsible for each language so the child will not get confused.

I am German and my husband is American. We both speak our mother tongue to our 5 months old daughter only. I'm also very particular about not reading English books to her (which sometimes poses the logistic issue: How do I get German children's books living here in the USA?) and I translate everything daddy says to her in German as well. Since I am the primary caregiver and communicate a lot more with my baby, I'm certain, she's going to be speaking German first.

Working with speech pathologists, they recommend each person speaks to the child in their native language. So if dad speaks English then he would speak to the baby in English and if mum speaks Japanese then she would speak to the baby in Japanese. Hope that makes sense!

Hi, I’ve noticed that your daughter is yelling while playing with the ball. Do you know why she’s doing that? My little one (7 months) is yelling like that, and sometimes more :) First I thought she was in pain but now I think she just want attention or she’s over-excited about something….but I do not know for sure…can you comment on that? Thank you!

Did they check the ears? Kids stop bubbeling around half a year when they don t hear well. Can’t say anything from distant and also I m not a doctor but I m a speech therapist and that could be a reason. If you re worried, talk to your doc about it :)!

These tips are generally strategies and won’t hurt but it would be best to take your baby to a paediatric speech pathologist to get individualised strategies and get an assessment done to identify why your little one is not yet talking.

Hi Christina the strategies in this video will help your little one learn the words so that when she is ready to talk she will be able to. In regards to your question about when do we expect kids to start talking. The general recommendation is that at 12 months of age they will generally say their first word and according to the CDC by 18 months of age they will be able to say three or more words besides “mama” or “dada”. If you are concerned about your child's language development the first thing I would recommend is getting a hearing assessment completed and arranging an appointment with a speech pathologist (AKA speech and language therapist) to see if there is a reason your little one is not yet using her words to communicate and get individualised tips.

Our family's (meaning my mom's, and what I tend to do naturally with babies) approach is slightly different. We speak to babies like we would with an adult, but slowlier, and we describe everything to them. For example, when changing a nappy : "Oh, your nappy is wet, let's take it off. I undo the Velcro and take the nappy off. Now, I am cleaning you with a wipe. Does it feel good ? See, I am putting a dry one under your bum. Now I am closing the nappy using the Velcro. Let us put our pajamas on. We put the left arm in the left sleeve, and the right arm in the right sleeve. Etc." The interaction feels very intimate for babies, as we look them in the eyes and smile while talking. Mundane tasks become a bonding moment and they learn our language in the process.

I just watched and wonder the same and my assumption would be that you keep it simple for the baby to learn first basic vocabulary and then build language from there. It makes sense for me since that is the approach I took when learning English, first I learned simple words before I leaned full phrases or sentence structure. What is your input?
