@@ThomannsDrumBash Hi Simon, thank you very much. I always find it exciting how other drummers tune their toms. Both in terms of the interval between the batter head and the resonant head, as well as the interval between the different toms. I see that with your tuning the interval between top and bottom head is rather high. At least significantly higher than what I would aim for. But the sound proves you right, your toms sound really cool. I just got a delivery with new tom skins from Thomann yesterday and can now experiment again with the tuning. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@ThomannsDrumBash3 жыл бұрын
Hi Raphael. Likewise. I‘m also into experimenting with these kinda things. Usually I tune the reso head a minor third higher than the batter head. I tried a couple of different intervals but i always come back to that :). I am actually not a big fan of tuning the batter head higher. There is a video about different Reso head tunings here on the channel if you‘re interested. For me, it was very interesting to do it :). What kinda heads did you get? My favorite combination right now is: Batter head: Vintage Ambassador Coated, Reso Head: Coated Diplomat.

@fuzzylogiceire Жыл бұрын
@@daltonidaho The fact that Pearl don't include a mounting system with their kits, making you buy them separately, leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Other manufacturers whose kits sound just as good if not better can manage it so why can't Pearl? It's even the norm for Pearl to equip kits that cost around 2,000 euro (for example their Professional Series) with the cheaper UT Remo heads. This is also true of the Session Select kit in the video. For comparison, the Mapex Saturn is equipped with Remo USA heads (the superior kind) on every single head, batter and reso. Even Tama manage to put Remo USA's on their batter's, if not the resos. I don't dislike Pearls drums, they make some excellent sounding drums, but I think they suffer from notable value for money issues when put up against their competitors.

I like that they come with a tom mount in a standard configuration, few of the higher-end kits do, except for Yamaha. I might go with a Starclassic Maple to get the finish I really want (Flat Deep Green). Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid could also be a contender though, too bad they cost so much more...

All else equal, the Pearl drums sounded the most live and had the longest sustain. The Mapex kit sounded much darker and drier. The Tama kit sounded the brightest and had the most attack out of the three kits. Slightly drier than the Pearl, but more live than the Mapex kit. Probably due to having die-cast hoops all around the kit and thicker shells. As far as brands, Mapex makes the best value-for-money kits if you want the best sounding kit at the lowest possible price. Pearl has the widest product range and offers far more customization options than the other two. The only area Pearl lacks in is hardware. While they’ve released tons of new hardware products lately that keep up with the competition now, they’ve historically been behind other top-of-the-line brands. Tama makes arguably the best hardware and the best drums for high-volume applications. If I ignored cost, I’d go with Pearl, but Tama would be an extremely close second.

I think 80 % of TAMA'S drummers on their roster all play some sort of RAWK!!! That kit is even punchier than most Birch kits I've heard, especially live!

You know how to drum but your ears don't know how to listen. That's all I've got to say.

It's funny we all have our brands we like but if somebody tuned them all good with new heads and played the same beat and did a blind test, there's no way to tell which kit is the brand you like! They all make good sounding kits but they all also make shit kits.
