In football, the better team does not always win. Sometimes its either a draw or the inferior team scoring a goal on the very few opportunities (sometimes just one opportunity) given to them. You can have 80% possession, 20 shots on goal, 10 shots on target but if you can not put the ball in the net, you still get Zero goals. That's the closest scientific explanation i can think of.
