Honestly some of my favorite games I got around to this year were the original Silent Hill trilogy. I never thought I’d enjoy the survival horror genre, but those games really stuck with me in a way not many others have. SH2 is now one of my favorite games period, with 1 and 3 not far behind. I even played my first RE games this year (RE2R and RE4R) and loved them. And I probably would not have tried them at all if it weren’t for this channel, so thanks Mayo! Hopefully all goes well in 2024!

That's sick. I hope you check out the old school RE games too. In my opinion, the RE1 remake is the magnum opus of the series and my favourite game of all time, and I only played it for the first time a couple years ago. Also, the original RE4 is absolutely still worth playing after the remake, in case you have any reservations about that.

"The only people who don't like [Silent Hill] have never played them before!" Seriously though, I feel like a lot of outsiders don't quite understand the affection for Silent Hill that fans have, possibly because there really aren't a lot of games like those original 4 titles. Most probably think it's closer to Resident Evil's "Action Movie" horror when the vibe it sets is more so what I call "Coffee Shop Horror"; an incredibly cozy, familiar setting but where something if off and the constant sense of "This is wrong" permeates the experience. Venturing through the games is a lot like venturing through the fog itself, the mystery of why things are like they are keeps you going and even then the game will still never fully explain some of the horrors that peak through the fog.

Turbo Overkill was such an achievement that I literally struggle to put it into words. I don't really use the word masterpiece, but TurbOverkill certainly fits the bill. I loved Deadlink too. Had for a few years since early access. It's a ton of fun and I've lost a good 70 hours to it - though I have to admit, Robo Quest has honestly spoiled me rotten for smooth-feeling FPS rouge-lites. I haven't beaten the final boss in Deadlink yet but I've def gotten close and I 100% will cross the checkered line at some point. Because of Starfield being trash, I'm legit worried about TES6
@Impalingthorn
@Impalingthorn Жыл бұрын
Agree wholesale about Starfield. Context. F***ing. Matters. A bad game is just a bad game and you can put it down, but a BORING game can sucker you into giving it more of a chance than you should and will result in wasted time, made infinitely worse by stans who will defend it for what they WISH the game was. And this applies to all kinds of things. It's why GOW Ragnarok and 2018 are such failures to me, not because they are TECHNICALLY bad games, but because they wear the "God of War" title only in name considering the ONLY thing that is actually "God of War" about those games is f***in' Kratos. Everything else has been reworked, retooled, replaced and rethemed. Different pantheon, different characters, different and less fulfilling combat, different approach to narrative that is pretentious under the guise that the old games didn't have a narrative (and a better one at that), etc. Relative to the endless hype and praise, GOW Ragnarok could ONLY be a massive disappointment. Fans of the game simply want it to sound like more than it really is, but that's not the kind of player I am. I criticize things I love. I'm a SILENT HILL fan, we haven't had anything good to eat in 20 years. I'm a RESIDENT EVIL fan, a series with mixed missteps that didn't just affect their own game but inspired bad decisions in future games. I am a MORTAL KOMBAT fan, a franchise that, in my opinion, has been fumbling hard since MK9 wher the franchise peaked, had decent stuff going on in MKX, then dropped the ball hard with MK11 and 12 (And yes, I refuse to call this new monstrosity "MK1"), and I have been playing those games SINCE I WAS 6 when they first released on NES and arcade cabinets in the 90's. You cannot GASLIGHT me into liking games. When you try to do that, all you have done is convinced me that there is an issue with the game's own merit. If I criticize a game, it's probably because I have some history with it and there is a part of me that loves it; wishes it could be better. I don't want MK, GOW, RE, SH or any other game to suck. I don't get fun out of complaining. So when I say Starfield is a dumpster fire, that is because there is an Oblivion fan in me that desperately wishes Bethesda's coding team was as good as their world design team. I love the worlds of these games but the bugs literally make them unplayable on PC without mods, and even then certain bugs sneak their way through the cracks and become ticking time bombs that kill my save files... Which is why I didn't have any hope for Starfield. Everyone SHOULD HAVE known it was going to suck and people started entire blood boiled feuds online debating its merit over it. Why, even? It's a BETHESDA game.

After having played New Vegas, and despite having to walk away from it because of the numerous bugs and crashes, I can still say that NV stomps on Starfield any day of the year, or decade. Also Creation Kit is still gamebryo, they can call it another name but it is what it is
@Impalingthorn
@Impalingthorn Жыл бұрын
@@danielgeronimo5538 Oh yeah, the Creation Kit was something I watched a full video on back in the day and it is almost literally an example of an old busted up machine being held together by repeated duct tape patches. The base engine was already pretty bad but they just kept stacking things on top of it. As for Fallout New Vegas, I definitely did not appreciate that masterpiece enough when it first released. I used to be under the impression that Fallout 3 was the "better" title until I replayed them both some years later and realized just how objectively superior New Vegas was. The only reason I didn't like it back at initial release was because, quite literally, I didn't appreciate Westerns that much and didn't like the setting as a result. Old World Blues, next to the Shivering Isles, is some of my favorite DLC to ever release from a game studio.
@danielgeronimo5538
@danielgeronimo5538 Жыл бұрын
@@ImpalingthornNew Vegas is a treasure that was in my hands, but was forced to let go of it. I had it, I made it work, I wanted to play it so much but realized that it is something that I will only witness not experience. The game is riddled with bugs and crashes a lot on the modern system, making modding the optimal way to even experience the game. Unfortunately, not everyone has the right schedule table or time for such things, so I had to move away from it. And this is a damn shame, because it had some of the most thought provoking tales I've ever witnessed in a game. Dead Money DLC was some of the best stories about treasure I had ever seen or heard about. If one is not a fan of westerns, it's got a few tricks up its sleeves. And tbh that's one of the things that's so great about it. The fact that it mishmashes a lot of genres of fiction into this beautiful collage, is a proof that, had Bethesda actually paid more care and love to it. It'll be one of the best games to ever exist, and even then, it still is.

There's tons of games that experience this when ported to pc from a console build or vice versa. Hell if I had a dollar for every PC mmorpg that came to consoles terribly optimized I'd be Elon Musk rich. It's a thing that's been in the industry since the beginning

Yes, Starfield was disappointing, but to put it at the worst game for “potential” is stupid. Feeling pity for smaller companies only goes so far, it’s like saying the 2012 worst movie of the year was “The Amazing Spiderman” instead of “FoodFight!” Because one had a larger budget or more “potential”

I’ve never really been a big fan of survival horror-type games, but purchased Dead Space and RE4 (sort of on a whim) and ended up loving both of them. I decided to pick up the RE2 remake later in the year as well, and 100% completed all three games. I’m now curious to see if another RE game will be coming out in March, like I’ve seen mentioned as a rumor on here in recently.

Loved RE4R but I really didn't like how, especially in professional and hardcore, successful shots to basic enemies like villagers just didn't do anything. It doesn't need to be stagger for melee, just something like the enemy taking a tumble or being forced to change what they were doing. Like a villager dashing in towards you with a hoe (? Idk what that tool is called), where even if you land hits directly on him, he just continues the animation and hits you. Upon being hit, he should falter (but not melee able) or just show any meaningful impact of the shot. That was probably the biggest problem I had with the game, playing on professional. It just made me quit using handguns altogether because they don't get consistent until you upgrade them quite a bit and you get the TMP very early on which does consistently stagger or slow enemies down.

Ya know, Mayo's videos can be entertaining when he's actually happy and in a good mood. (Sorry Mayo) I still feel a bit upset and still disagree with some of the criticisms on some of your reviews but that Starfield critic and it's award is well deserved imho... Like there are bad games you can talk shit about and laugh at because you know exactly what they are. and then there are the disappointments which you kinda feel bad so you give them a fair chance because you feel like they are not bad games. But Starfiled ? It's just offensive and insulting to AAA industry, Especially if you just take in its massive budget and the hype it generated. Anyway,Since you're planning to do a Robocop Vs Terminator video, I would actually love to see you do a Robocop Video Game Retrospective one day in which you cover pretty much all of the Robocop games from the NES/Arcade to the dreadful Titus's Robocop and to today's Robocop Rouge City.

Turbo Overkill was great for me especially because it justified my opinion of many of the other nu-boomer shooters: they're just kind of bland except for the aesthetic. TO plays super well, looks great, and kept me engaged for the whole campaign. It was really only in the final level that I started to go "Okay let's just get this done with already", and that's a credit to the game considering that I got to that point at around level 3-4 in Dusk & Amid Evil and even sooner in most of the others. I also think the fact that it doesn't really use as much "resource management" and weapon swapping/matching as Doom Eternal is kind of a point in its favor. Heretical as the opinion probably is here, I don't really like DE much (on higher difficulties) because it feels too much like just cycling cooldowns in a really fast MMO to me. It's very distant from the kind of FPS play I grew up with and enjoy. TO, on the other hand, doesn't really require much cooldown management and just lets you use whatever weapons on whoever you want to full effectiveness with very few exceptions like the shield guys. For me, that makes it feel a bit more "free" in combat. I'm not thinking about trying to match ideal weapons/abilities to their ideal enemy to create the mathematically perfect encounter resolution, instead I'm actually able to think about the fight in the same way Johnny is which improves immersion. Probably just a me problem, but still, game's great and I like it a lot. Really hoping they continue to add more to the new map editor because it's pretty basic right now, but has definite potential.

3:25 Ahhh Classic Mayo.... Being disingenuous to nitpick a game. The game does indeed have impossible mode. Unless you're genuinely one of those players who can complete the Impossible mode with not much difficulty. But you don't seem to mention this. 4:30 "I had been anxiously awaiting Trepang 2" That's very odd because you said that you skipped on the demo because your hyped died down on the game when you saw the gameplay footage. 5:20 So basically you're doubling down on what you said in your Trepang 2 review video? You heavily criticized Trepang 2 for not having the same gameplay aspects of Fear when the game is not Fear. Its inspires by Fear but ultimately it's not fear. You criticizing the game for "taking away" weapon slots is kinda lying because Trepang is not a Fear game. They didn't take anything away. Just how the game was implemented. Also you mention that you don't like the game doesn't let you carry 3 or more grenades... Which is again a Fear mechanic. And you can always use the enemies grenades when you use them as human shields.

One life mode is different from an actual harder difficulty. You sound more like the nitpicker, just on a KZbinr than on a game. Is there any purpose to your life? Anything better to do? Not happy enough someone added a game in their best list?
@maskedman5657
@maskedman5657 Жыл бұрын
@@danielgeronimo5538 First off your first statement is wrong. Because for one the enemy AI is in fact harder in impossible mode and it makes the challenge even harder because you have 3 save slots and it's permadeath. So again Mayo is criticizing the game for a lack of challenge with the difficulty modes when there is an alternative right there. Also you criticize me for being nitpicky which I found incredibly Ironic since UTM is one of the most generally nitpicky reviewers ever. If you ever watched his Titanfall and Alien Isolation review you'd clearly see that. But all of a sudden if I criticize Mayo on his criticisms... Then I'm all of a sudden being nitpicky. I don't see how that translates. If mayo put out false information or unfair criticisms to a game then it's definitely fair to criticize him on those points

What is it with people constantly misrepresenting my points? 1) Impossible Mode is simply not much of a challenge over Hard other than not being able to die. ZEALOT mode in Dead Space 2 is what I'm looking for, which is significantly more difficulty, MADE for veterans. It actually cuts your resources in half, which is crucial to the experience. Remake has no such challenge available. I beat Impossible mode on like my second try. Zealot? I die constantly. I talked about this more in the actual review of the game. 2) Here you're just lying about me. I never said that "my hype died down from seeing gameplay footage." Quite the opposite. I thought the footage was SO GOOD that I didn't want to play the demo. I wanted to save the entire experience to be fresh and amazing when the game finally released. 3) Oh, you're one of those. lol I made it clear right here in the video. I think that taking the FEAR combat loop and amping it up to 11, while also removing a weapon slot and limiting you to one equipment type, was a mistake. It's still a really good game. But I would enjoy it far more if it hadn't done that. Yes, using enemies as grenades is cool, but this doesn't take away from the fact that if I'm holding a bunch of flash bangs, and I find a box of tomahawks, I have to give up all my flash bangs to pick them up and experiment with them, probably not finding any more flashbangs for the rest of the level. It sucks.

I didn’t have the opportunity to play many games due to my own schedule being screwed up. However, I did have some time playing RE4R and Hi-Fi Rush. Pizza Tower is my GOTY, being a fan of the platforming genre and how the game flows. But man… Redfall… even through GamePass, I still felt ripped off. Perhaps one of the worst games I’ve played, ever. I was told it got better with a patch, but it only served to highlight the other problems of its combat system, the abilities, the weapons, etc. It only brought to life how underdeveloped its core gameplay is. Making vampire boring to kill is one heck of a feat…

I'm convinced there's no vehicles in Starfield because the game is too poorly optimized to handle it. It's already limited to 30fps even on the Series X. How has Bethesda not taken notes from people that actually fix their games to make their games better??
