I've used Martina Gebhardt cleansers for over a decade, but when I started wearing make-up again, I thought the same as you! I was sooo disappointed that I couldn't use my favourite cleanser anymore. However, I then found that in combination with a flannel/facecloth or muslin cloth it does remove everything just fine, so maybe give that a try?

If you don’t have problems with baking soda, the Jāsön stick deodorants are very good - it’s the only ‘natural’ deodorant that has ever really worked for me, although it might not be enough in summer. The price is reasonable and they have Vitamin E, which is nicely moisturising but not sticky. If you don’t like fragrances they have an unscented version.

For my dry-combination skin I mix 3 oils: Depending on your container, I do 50% Argan Oil, 25% Rosehip Oil, 25% Pomegranate Oil. I add 5-10 drops of tea tree oil to stave breakouts and 10-20 drops of lavender oil for balance-it’s my perfect mixture after years of facial oil use!

I used to avoid brands where the parent company isn't cruelty free, but I've changed my opinion in it. I think it can be a way to show there's a demand for cruelty free and non-toxic products. If the parent company sees an increase in sales of their cruelty free brands and a decrease in their regular brands, that can send a message and maybe push them to make other brands cruelty free as well. I think the restaurant analogy is really compelling - I still eat at restaurants that also serve meat, and by ordering veg options I hope it shows there are people who want more veg options. It seemed strange that I had different thoughts about beauty products and that I should apply the same reasoning to beauty brands/parent companies. Of course this is with the understanding that the parent company hasn't changed anything with the product and it's still cruelty free, non-toxic, etc. (although they rarely seem to change things with the products, mostly just on the business side).
@marlengonzalez17987 жыл бұрын
I don’t want my money going to a company using it to tests on animals. I think if we stop buying from Schmidt they would get the message also.
@MyGreenCloset7 жыл бұрын
Or it can show the company that investing in cruelty free brands/manufacturing is a bad investment. I think we all need to draw the line somewhere and that's going to be a personal decision. For example I don't avoid stores that also sell animal products, and I don't avoid groceries stores or restaurants that also sell meat/animal products. It's not only very difficult to find entirely vegan stores but I think there's value in buying cruelty-free/vegan products from companies - just in the last year my local grocery store has increased their plant based products, if everyone plant based avoided it because they also sell meat, there would be no reason for them to invest in and start carrying more veg brands.

Nice video :) thank you for recommending Dr. Hauschka in your previous videos. I recently started using more natural cosmetics and I purchased their volume mascara and liquid eyeliner. I love both and especialy the eyeliner is PERFECT!! I use eyeliner in my daily makeup rutine and for two years I have tried so many popular brands (from essence to l'oreal and art deco... ) and almost every one of them let me down. Except for the Dr. Hauschka eyeliner. It has a very thin brush, but it looks beautiful, it is extremely long lasting and yet it isn't waterproof so I can easily remove it. The price is a bit high, but it is worth it and I highly recommend it!

Which conditioner do you have? Both of them are quite moisturizing so I use very little because my hair doesn't need it but I tried both and found that problem with the "thick" one - if I don't wash it out really well it leaves too much moisture and my hair looks stringy. So maybe try using a very small amount and then find the amount that works best for your hair?

My biggest green beauty success of this year has been the "volume has spirulina" shampoo bar by Yatna on Etsy. It's one of the best shampoos I've ever used, solid or otherwise. My hair is fine but I have a lot of it and tends to get greasy roots quickly, so I wash it every day. I have a very sensitive scalp and (so far) this doesn't bother it - many shampoos cause flare-ups of dermatitis on my hairline or at best make my scalp very itchy. It gives my hair body and shine and makes it look and feel really healthy, to the point where people have commented on it (my hairdresser included!) I don't think it's vegan because it has silk proteins in it but other than that the ingredients are pretty benign, I think. Fortunately I haven't had any catastrophic misses this year - I've focused on using up the makeup I have already so haven't tried many new products.

What is your take on cruelty free brands who sell to a non cruelty free parent company? Schmidt's just sold to Unilever. I love their deodorant. I was kind of disappointed in them for selling out.
@marianateras6497 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know that Schmidt’s sold out 😭. I’ll have to stop buying from them! I can’t support them with a parent company like that that is so cruel!
@woodsmokeandwisteria18427 жыл бұрын
Maria Nateras I know! They announced it on their Facebook page last week. I was so upset because I just found their deodorant a few months ago and a couple days before they announced it I stocked up during their sale so I'm set for a whole year. I'm not going to return the order because I'll need to search for a deodorant that is just as good during that time but I won't repurchase when I run out :( part of me wants to repurchase because it does say that a cruelty free brand is where I want my dollar to go but that money also goes to the parent company. Ugh. :( I'm still trying to switch out products and it seems like Everytime I find something they do the same thing. It is sad that small companies aren't making it and seem to need to sell out. It would be nice if China just changed their policy.
@marianateras6497 жыл бұрын
Less stress with Jes I know that some think it’s ok to still support them because maybe the parent company will see that consumers will only buy from cruelty free companies but to be honest I don’t buy it. I just don’t see parent companies ever caring since they are already making money from both non-cruelty free and now cruelty free brands. It’s all about the money to be honest. I’m definitely not going to be giving my money to brands that don’t care about our health and that also test on animals. It’s just so sad.
@melonymartindale59716 жыл бұрын
Less stress with Jes, she responded to this question earlier in the comments. She said that she used to not buy products from animal-testing parent companies but she has changed her mind. Now she still buys it because if they see higher sales in their cruelty free products then it may help push them to go cruelty free in their other products too.

For quite a few years now I'm using Benecos natural mascara and really like it. I think it's German brand. When it comes to face cleanser, I've tried many different brands but couldn't find any good one - most of them either irritated my face skin and made it dry, or oily. So for a few months now I just wash my face (and mascara from my eyelashes) with water and then with coconut oil. My face skin never looked so fresh and young. Best deodorant - definitely "Salt of the Earth". Same like mascara I use this deodorant for at least 6 years now. Best toothpaste - Ecodenta Triple Effect with clay and nicely minty taste. When I found something I like, I tend to stick to those products for many year :) My biggest disappointment of this year was Dr. Bronner's Castile soap. It didn't work as a shampoo whatsoever (I've tried a few times and rinsed my hair carefully) and I didn't like it as a shower gel either. Just trying to use the rest of a bottle up as a hand soap.

I recently started using the Mea Natura Olive Hair Mask as a conditioner. My hair has been so shiny and soft. I don't know if I'll continue to use it as a normal conditioner. I'll have to see if it starts to make my hair feel oily or not. However, with that hair mask I feel like I can use a more drying shampoo. I have some Dr. Bronner's cleaner that I may use for my shampoo until it's gone and then switch to a shampoo bar. I bought a locally made bar of soap at the grocery store a few months ago that I've been using instead of body wash. There is no packaging required for purchase. I also bought a soap saver, which is made from hemp that I keep the soap in and use to build suds and as an exfoliant. It's been working very well. I really like the Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) facial toner and I've been using it off and on for years. I've thought about switching to a greener product, but I hate to disrupt my cleansing routine. I was given a Lush facial soap bar almost two years ago that I"m still using to wash my face in the shower (I use the toner outside of the shower to remove makeup or as a refresher if my face feels oily). It might have another two years the way it's going. And I have a tea tree moisturizer that was given to me. It's from the Body Shop, so I'll look for something greener when it's gone, but I really like it. It sinks in very well and moisturizes without oiliness. I've been pretty happy with the Meow Meow Tweet deodorant. I bought the primer too, but I don't think it really does much. The only problem with the Meow Meow Tweet deodorant is that it wears off too quickly. I love that it's in cardboard packaging though. I may give Schmidt's a try. 100% Pure has been hit or miss for me. I love their powder, but I wasn't keen on the mascara. I recently purchased a BWC mascara to try out and it's okay. I use it as a eyeliner as well and it works pretty well in that capacity. I'm still searching for a great foundation, but it'll take a while to use up what I have currently, so I haven't started searching yet. Thank you for sharing your experiences with your beauty products!

Thanks for sharing Jailyn! I've never heard of a soap saver, that sounds really cool! The Meow Meow Tweet deodorant seems to be pretty popular, next time I'm in NA I'll see if I can get one to try out. I'd love to see how it compares to Schmidt's and my homemade one.

Ya, beauty, and body/facial care are so individualized. I mainly watch to find more lines to try, because no one all has the needs I do & is vlogging green beauty. Even after detoxing, I simply can't use baking soda deodorants. They turn my pits to hamburger, and never help with odor. It's so frustrating. After getting your opinion on Lily Lolo's mascara I'm really wary of trying it. Nearly all mascaras, conventional and green, cause serious eye itch already. Hearing what you experienced is a definite turn off. I wish companies offered sample sizes of mascara.

Great overview. Thnx for sharing. Sad times that the Lily Lolo mascara did not work for you. I love it. But I am going to try to find an alternative with better (non plastic) packaging. I also tried the Lamazuna toothpaste. And I also did not like it very much. I used it up but I won't repurchase. I haven't been able to find the toothpaste tablets you mentioned. But I did find a toothpaste I am happy with without fluoride in a metal tube.It is by the brand Homeofresh. So I will stick with that for now. I'd love to try Davids, but the only place I found that ship to Europe charge $30 shipping. :( And I have the same experience with shampoo bars unfortunately. I think I have found a non plastic alternative now though. A online store that sells ingredients for diy cosmetics and also bottles and jars and such have an basic shampoo and conditioner that you can get packaged in glass bottles on request. So I think I will try those next. See how they feel about refilling. I also came across this brand, but they only ship in the US for now. www.plaineproducts.com/ But I hope they will come to Europe.

I really like the Martina Gebhardt Products, but you definitely have to use them as recommended. The cleansers are not meant to remove make-up and you have to use them with a Muslin cloth. So that’s not for everyone.

I really wish it said that on the bottle or website, if I knew there was a special process I could have avoided it. :(

The thing is that Martina Gebhardt herself wears neither make-up nor sunscreen 😀. She doesn't believe in them, so she'd probably not think of putting anything on the bottle about removing make-up. To be fair, though, her cleansers have always been able to remove my mascara, even when I just used them with warm water. There generally used to be more information around about how to use her products, and her cleansers are supposed to be the last product you use at night, no moisturisers or anything afterwards, so that explains why they leave a bit of moisture/care behind.

Oh gosh, yes, Lily Lolo is such a hit-and-miss. (I have Opinions about most of their products haha) I've not had any reaction to the mascara, but I massively disliked it performance-wise. Their foundation, though... I agree heartily, it's the bee's knees: I used to have really bad reactions to most foundations, but never this thing. It has like 4 ingredients? And it works as foundation, concealer and mattifying powder all in one, plus the coverage can be very light or built up quite heavily, so I don't think the concealer (which I also wasn't a fan of) is even necessary - I tend to use an extra layer of the foundation instead! It looks so natural. And yeah, I was also surprised to be the second-to-lightest shade for once! LL could really use more dark shades, though... the darkest it goes is "tanned Mediterranean" :/
