Favorite remake of all time: John Carpenter's The Thing

Into Darkness worst remake ever? You are mad. First of all it is not really a remake. It reuses many themes of Wrath of Khan, but they really make only half of the story, the other half is original. And while I may understand that substantial quoting of the Wrath of Khan may be disturbing to some, I didn't mind it, even the infamous core scene, which I even kind of enjoyed. In my opinion, even if considered a remake it is fairly fresh, and provides 2 hours of solid entertainment. And, after all, it rather takes place of the Space Seed, than Wrath of Khan. For me, actually one of the highlights of 2013. One thing I agree - Cumberbatch, while okay, was clearly inferior to Montalban.
@CrazyChemistPL
@CrazyChemistPL 10 жыл бұрын
Actually it is kind of silly that so many people raged about the core scene. If they could be able to see bigger picture, to look besides almost direct quoting of the Wrath of Khan (with role reversal), they would probably be able to realize that that scene wasn't there just to rip Wrath of Khan off, but it served useful purpose in Into Darkness storyline. It was a turning point for Spock, something that allowed him to finally see Kirk as his friend, while also providing Kirk chance to mature a bit. The fact that they managed to revive Kirk in the very same film is the good thing in my opinion too - we ended up with a solid sequel with definite ending, not one of these overly popular first sequels that end in the most interesting moment, being in fact just first half of the sequel story, just to ensure second sequel creation and (at least financial) success.

Either way, clearly better. Thomas crown affair could do too, although I'd hardly call either a classic. There are a whole slew of late 60s celebrated macho guy movies which just sucked. i.e. Oceans 11, the Italian Job. Sabrina with harrison ford was good, but I haven't seen the original.

Karl Urban completely owned Sylvester Stallone, as Karl a Urban was actually a fan of then Dredd comics and was more invested in the character, which meant that he gave a much better performance. Stallone in the other hand was really just mediocre at the role.

I Loved it, i thought Cumberbatch portrayed Khan really well, also he put so much more emotion into Khan that i just didn't feel with the original. I was actually cheering for Khan in ST:ID plus the reverse of scene where Kirk dies instead of Spock was amazing! I think ST:ID was a brilliant, sort of remake, i can't say it was a exact remake of Wrath of Khan because the of the Parallel Universe

The Fly. HANDS. DOWN. It's the greatest remake of all-time in addition to being one of the greatest horror films in general. Gruesome, horrifying, and poignant in ways the original couldn't imagine. The original wasn't merely updated, it was expanded upon and developed from something as campy as a big fly head guy to the concept of the disintegration of the human body and psyche.

Best remake of late is by far "Dredd". It kept true to the comics by not showing his face. Karl Urban did a FANTASTIC job of acting, by potraying emotions with only moving his mouth. He must have had cramps from that. :o) Unfortunately he also played IMHO the worst remake. Jar Jar Trek (both of them). He looks like McCoy and he sounds like McCoy. But that pocket reboot universe is too full of Star Wars references.

And do not even get me started on the sequeal to those.. ) - Carrie - The Amityville horror - The Shining ( both remakes ) - Friday The 13th - A Nightmare On Elmstreet - Robo Cop and SO many more! See, Hollywood is running out of good ideas for movies now a days. So they attempt to remake classic, amazing movies. But.. they take a giant shit on every film they remake

My favorite remake, at least lately, has got to be Dredd 3d. I was too young to realize how corny Judge Dredd with Stallone was and I still think it's entertaining, but damn the new one is awesome. Never knew Dredd could be so interesting. I want a sequel so bad and I mean really, that's how you know a movie is good. It leaves you wanting more, which Judge Dredd (95), cool as it was, did not.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010-remake is actually one that i really like. I know that may seem unconventional, and it certainly is to me, because usually I tend to (like most people) hate horror movie remakes. In Friday the 13th I was rooting for Jason for two reasons. A: I wanted him to get the killing done so the movie could end and I could go home and watch one of the original films, and B: I wanted to see those asshole, piece of crap and over-the-top insanely stupid, cliché stereotype teenagers die.

Critics and audiences alike hated it Family movie? Are you stupid? You know a lot of R rated family movies? Original scored a 18 on RT, 5.2 on IMDb, Remake scored 78 on RT, and 7 on IMDb The remake was everything the original tried to be-a badass, fun summer action flick. Character development? It's "Dredd," dipshit. Go watch an HBO Series if you're looking for character development.

Fistful of Dollars is the best remake of all time. NO QUESTION! Well, I could entertain the notion of Wizard of Oz, but I don't think remaking a silent film into a talkie counts. Man, saying STID was a remake is probably the dumbest thing I've heard all week. The main plot was completely different than WoK. Sure it had Khan in it and one scene that was remake of one shot from WoK, but that doesn't make the whole movie a remake. Theoretically, HG has it's own books. It's suppose to be (suppose to be being key phrase) more political while good ol' BR is more of a cut and to the point murder fest. Can you kill your own friends Versus Can you kill strangers of your same age group? One holds more impact emotionally. Then again, as it was brought up on another video, these two are not the first to do this idea. See also: Running Man. Starring Arnold Schw- I can't spell his name.

Dredd wasn't quite a remake as it was more of a "fan film." It was a film directed towards fans of the character Judge Dredd. It wasn't a remake because it didn't retell the story of the movie, or told an origin story, but that it just told a story about another day in the life of Judge Dredd. But I do agree, Dredd was tons better than the original Judge Dredd

I completely agree that Star Trek Into Darkness was a pretty poor movie overall (and especially poor when compared to Wrath of Khan). However, I would like to defend Benedict Cumberbatch's role in it. He did an undoubtedly great job with what he was given. He was dark, very threatening, hyper intelligent, and everything I hoped Khan would be. And though the movie didn't really touch on it, considering how shallow it was, the question of whether or not he's actually a villain is an interesting one. Cumberbatch plays the character well enough that, while maintaining his menace, he manages to get you to think that he might not be the bad guy, and instead he's just trying to save his crew. Anyway, just wanted to throw my thoughts out there. I thought Benedict did a great job in a pretty poor movie, and I wish they had explored his character a bit more.

How were "3:10 to Yuma" and "True Grit" not mentioned as fine examples of remakes being better? Is it because they were westerns? In the same vein as "Wizard of Oz", the "Ten Commandments" was also a remake of an earlier silent version.

Favorite remake: Dawn of the Dead. I know this is blasphemous for some zombie fans, but I actually like it better than the Romero movie. Maybe it's because I saw the Synder version first, but I really like this movie. Also, if it's based on other source material (such as a book...like Wizard of Oz), it's technically a reboot, not a remake.

Austin R. By every objective metric used to measure a film, the Coen Brothers' True Grit is far better than John Wayne's. Watching Wayne playing "John Wayne with an eyepatch" is nowhere near as good watching Jeff Bridges own the role as if Wayne had never existed. The rest of the cast is wonderful as well, especially Hailee Steinfeld, who was nowhere near as gratingly annoying as Kim Darby in the original film. The script by the Coens was also engaging, full of their with but played within the confines of an intimate Western tale whose subject matter contradicts the tone of the original film. This is the story of a young girl seeking to murder the man who killed her father, with the help of a drunk who isn't even sure he wants to help in the first place. The tone of the original film does not match that subject matter, but the Coens nailed it. Their direction on the film is also far better than the original's. I believe a lot of the original's praise stems from people feeling that John Wayne could do no wrong. The man was an American icon, don't get me wrong, he was just not that great of an actor. To give him an Oscar in 1969 for True Grit, over Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight's performances in Midnight Cowboy, was insanity.

The best Remake is either The Thing or The Fly. The worst Remake is Man of Steel. Yes, it's a terrible remake of Superman I & II. I have to agree with Devin. The Marvel movies are great because they are not afraid to have fun yet be serious enough. Many movies today are way too serious. I'm looking at you Man of Steel.
@Elmerstudd007
@Elmerstudd007 11 жыл бұрын
My rebuttal to your statement is that I personally liked Man of Steel quite a lot simply because it took a much grittier approach to the Superman franchise which in my opinion is quite dated, the fanbase for Superman was starting to dwindle because Superman was just too powerful and the Christopher Reeve films did a good job capturing that but to cater to a modern audience it wasn't fitting, hence why Superman Returns which was a direct sequel to the Reeve movies was a flop. I'm not saying the Reeve era is bad by any means but a rewrite was necessary to keep audiences entertained and to bring in a new fanbase.
@toekneebeeears
@toekneebeeears 11 жыл бұрын
Jmanheroboy16 I'm glad you liked Man of Steel. Many people did. But, the fact is that many people (including myself) also didn't. The audience was very divided. Unlike the first two Christopher Reeve films which were universally loved. Another movie which was universally loved is the Dark Knight which was also a gritty film. Some of the differences being that Batman is a much more grittier character therefore the grittier tone was much more appropriate. And Dark Knight was much more fun. Even though the Joker had a very dark sense of humor he was still funny. A good example of this is when he dresses like a nurse. Whereas Man of Steel had much less humor. Another universally loved movie is the Avengers which was both a bigger financial and critical success than either Man of Steel or Dark Knight. Hell, Avengers made almost more money then both DK and MOS combined. Just compared to MOS Avengers made almost $1 billion more than MOS. And Avengers is not gritty at all. So that proves that audiences are still more interested in seeing fun humor filled moves. The people who say "Superman was just too powerful." don't like Superman. Which further proves my theory that Man of Steel was made for people who hate Superman.
@toekneebeeears
@toekneebeeears 11 жыл бұрын
Jmanheroboy16 You don't need to apologize for having and sharing your opinion. Your opinion is completely valid and many people agree with you. I simply disagree with you. I understand that DC wants to bring in a bigger audience to a Superman movie. But, they don't have to ruin the integrity character and make him gritty to do it. The Marvel movies (especially the Avengers) is proof of that. This movie is catering to one specific audience, those who hate Superman. This version of Superman is like an unpopular kid trying to change themselves to fit in with the cool kids. When doing this they are not being themselves. I'm fine with them making a Superman movie a "bit" darker but, they went too far. Like you said, The Avengers found the perfect balance of realistic and humorous, Man of Steel did not. Superman is not as tragic as Batman. Yes Superman's biological parents died but, he wasn't old enough to even know them and have a connection to them. And he had terrific loving adoptive parents. Batman was old enough to have a loving bond with his parents who were killed right in front of him. And Batman didn't have terrific loving adoptive parents. You right, Superman doesn't have a great sense of humor. But, that's why you put in comic relief characters like Jimmy, Bibbo Bibbowski , a comedic villain like Toyman who can be funny and threatening at the same time like Joker, or have a bumbling Clark himself.
@Elmerstudd007
@Elmerstudd007 11 жыл бұрын
When you put it in that way I agree with you. It still doesn't change my opinion on the film but I do agree that DC could have done a better job mixing the two rather than sticking with one side, though out of the sides to have picked I like the direction they went, calling Man of Steel a remake is technically correct but I see it more as a reimagining of the superman franchise, not to mention if they are attempting to put Batman and Superman into the same gritty aspect of the Nolanverse as it's called I suppose, the new Superman makes much more sense. It's like the difference of The Amazing Spiderman comic book series and The Ultimate Spiderman comic book series, both have the same characters and similar plot structure but are completely different as to how they are approached.
@toekneebeeears
@toekneebeeears 11 жыл бұрын
Jmanheroboy16 I 'm glad we agree that DC could have done a better job mixing the two rather than sticking with one side. But, again I have to disagree. I don't see this new DC cinematic as the "Nolanverse". The "Nolanverse" ended with Dark Knight Rises. Nolan himself has said that the upcoming Afleck Batman is a different Batman entirely. That's one of many things that disappointed me about Man of Steel. It's too much like the "Nolanverse". We had the Burton Batman, the Schumacher Batman, the Nolan Batman, it's time to move on. Batman and Superman are completely different. They are literally night and day. This Superman should have been completely different from Nolan's Batman.

I think many Americans don't understand the cultural references in Infernal Affairs, such as the Buddhism religion and Chinese traditions, and that's why The Departed has a better appeal to American audiences because it features a more familiar and understandable cultural background than the Infernal Affairs. Also, the Infernal Affairs has one prequel and one sequel which gives more character development.

Best remake I've seen so far: The Fly (1986), closely followed by The Thing (1982), The Departed (2006) and Scarface (1983). True Grit (2010) was very good and enjoyable too, but I have yet to see the original. Worst remake: Vanilla Sky (2001) by a landslide. I'm saying this because the original Spanish film is one of the best and most revolutionary films of the 90's, and Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise invested so much money and so much resources into remaking it as quickly as possible that, even if you take aside the fact that a remake was completely unnecessary in the first place, their product felt like a soulless, unwitty, unimaginative version of the original, and just Tom Cruise's excuse to have a love scene with Penelope Cruz. I mean, that movie is pathetic. Unfortunately, only if you saw the original first, and loved it like I did, will you be able to scrutinize VS with enought in-depth judgement to understand how much of a piece of shit it is. But many people never watched Abre Los Ojos, In fact, I don't think I've ever seen another remake where so many people are unaware of the fact that it's a remake as in this case, hence VS's decent ratings and reviews. Hence my HATRED towards Vanilla Sky.
