Really Bruh I mean the rest of the world were the ones that pushed transformers 4 past 1 billion dollars, while the US barely contributed compared to the previous entries in the series, and that movie is incomprehensible. Everybody has their flaws

Edge of Tomorrow is a great film that will stand up to the test of time. It is efficient story telling that treats the viewer with intelligence. I think a lot of credit has to go to the director Doug Liman who directed another of my favorites The Bourne Identity.

People are complaining about what Devin said about movies overseas. I just want to clarify: That's not his opinion, that's Hollywood's opinion on most films so the people behind it can get more money.

So far How to Train your Dragon 2 has been my favorite movie BY FAR. I have yet to see X-men and Dawn but HTTYD 2 was probably the closest thing to a perfect movie I've ever seen. It had great emotion and was bold enough to include some pretty mature content for a film whose main demographic is for kids, much like The Lion King and Bambi. My only problem was that the main villain of the movie wasn't very fleshed out, but he served his purpose well for the story.

I'm seeing a lot of hate for the comments made at 4:22. "You don't want to have to translate too much, explosions travel farther than wit, plot lines get much simpler and dumber", meaning exactly that. There are vast cultural differences that might miss a mainstream audience in other countries(jokes might not translate well, symbolism might not mean the same thing, etc), so if they keep it as basic and homogenized as possible, they stand to make the most money possible. The "focus on the heroic Chinese government" part is correct as well. A lot of blockbusters have had scenes that build up the Chinese government so their films can get a wider release, or released at all, even after extensive censorship(Iron Man 3, Transformers, Paciffic Rim, etc). "That being said, his next point was stupid as shit with "I thought this was an American movie". Thats really, really stupid.
@PredatorCharlie
@PredatorCharlie 10 жыл бұрын
Even said nicely to all, still your comment gives a resume of: besides US, Canada, Europe, the rest of the planet is stupid to a point to like a keep story movie ??? Even big one like Dark Knight, its not all action, like Nolan's does, puts a philosophic message in all hes movies. Just us see that, not the rest of the world? Simple as Avengers story was, well sadly seems more then 50% of people on earth are stupid, just want no story, action stupid movies...?

Guardians of the Galaxy wasn't the highest grossing movie of the summer internationally though. I hate it when the media only focuses on what movies gross in the USA. 1.Transformers: Age of Extinction $1,080,587,189 (US box office $245 064 448) 2.Maleficent $754,203,484 (US box office $239 703 484) 3.X-Men: Days of Future Past $745,921,860 (US box office $233 783 836) 4.The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $708,294,944 (US box office $202 853 933) 5.Dawn of the Planet of the Apes $668,704,475 (US box office $206 827 518) 6.Guardians of the Galaxy $617,104,055 (US box office $307 344 958) EDIT: Corrected the list.

Yeah, but as an American series, they're looking at the American box office. Foreign box office is a totally different beast.
@timoyr2954
@timoyr2954 10 жыл бұрын
dunnowy123 I understand that, but the US box office doesn't really mean that much. Like if a movie has a bad US box office, you might think that it won't get a sequel, but if you watch the international box office you get a better picture. For example Resident evil movies, although they were shit, they did very well overseas and got a bunch of sequels.
@dunnowy123
@dunnowy123 10 жыл бұрын
Timo Yrjola True, but actually Hollywood studios don't make that much internationally compared to the US. In the US, they get half of what the movie makes and the rest goes to theaters. Internationally, depending by country, they might get 20% at the lowest to maybe 40% when you take into account theaters, tariffs and so on. So yes, it's important and especially if a movie makes like $800-$1 billion overseas, but the US market is still the most important to the majority of movies. ***** Yes, selfishness when talking about American made movies...

Timo Yrjola , also, the results of international box office may take up to 6 months to wrap up the gains, because the costs of sending films overseas are really complex. So yes, the domestic box office is a good thermometer to movies, because it's easier to know how well it went

Amazing Spiderman 2 gets way too much hate. Like, I can understand the hate Man of Steel gets because he kills his own villain. But people complain and nitpick the ASM2 non-stop. If the Raimi series never existed, and Spiderman never had to be rebooted, fans wouldn't say a thing about Marc Webb's Spiderman. It was a great and underrated movie.

I don't care what people say, I enjoyed Amazing Spider-Man 2. I also really can't get into the idea of wanting to see Guardians. As far as I'm concerned, it's a comic book from deep within the vaults of Marvel that nobody really knew existed a few months ago apart from a select group of Marvel fanboys (Mainly those who have read the entirety of the 'Thanos Imperative' arc). To me, it became a film because somebody at Marvel thought "Talking animal? That will make money!" which sort of annoys me when there are such more popular and deserving heroes that still haven't gotten a film yet.

James Farr If you're refering to the Gwen Stacy mushy mushy love love stuff, I'll agree that it was sometimes cringy (especially as a long time fan, I didn't need the 'build up' for it) but I felt it had to be there to establish what her character meant to Peter so that the eventual climax would have more impact. It's kind of the only thing I found (remember being) cringeworthy.

linkno1 It's your loss. For me? I'm surprised the movie was even made. Imagine that corporate business man at Marvel...thinking, you want to make "Guardians of the Galaxy" that even some Marvel fans haven't heard of, AND it stars a talking racoon & a giant tree, AND you want Chris Pratt to be your action star? SO many risks they took, and they really paid off. Such a refreshing film in a time when everything seems the same.

My list: 1. Guardians Of The Galaxy (Was funny, was great, the characters were amazing, I AM GROOT!) 2. X-Men DOFP (The plot was incredible, the characters were too interesting, the action scenes were amazing, Hugh as Wolverine was funny and so badass) 3. TASM2 (For me was like a comic of Spider-Man comes to life!, the people hate it so much because they spoke so much about Peter-Gwen relationship, but this is how Spider-Man is, its more, in a time Stan hired a draughtsman of romantic comics just for Spider-Man, and I really liked Electro, in a moments I felt bad for him) 4. Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier (The Winter Soldier was so badass, the Cap finally was interesting!, and the action scenes are incredible!) 5. Dawn Planet Of The Apes (Amazing plot, all the characters were merely amazing!) 6. Godzilla (I like the movie, but Godzilla needed more time in the screen, I like Kick-Ass, and the action scenes were good) Ok thats all :)

DisasterLord It may be overrated but it's still a pretty good anime. Overrated =/= bad. I don't think it's supposed to be exclusively Western media that this show focuses on either, it's just that the people making the content as well as the viewers are mostly people of primarily English speaking countries such as America and the UK. In general, people from these countries don't watch 'foreign' TV or films (I mean foreign as in non English speaking), so it wouldn't be good for views if they focused on that stuff. As well as I don't think the 'host' knows all that much about many 'foreign' things. He's shown his ignorance on many occasions in terms of a lot of foreign media. So not so much they HAVE to do Western stuff, but that's what the host and audience mostly want to see. If a Chinese film became the blockbuster film of the Summer, they would likely talk about it.

It was pretty okay movie, solid 6.5/10 for me. Andrew Garfield isn't a good Peter Parker, but he's a good Spiderman. I really liked Electro but I felt that Harry Osborne/Green Goblin was a little rushed. Rhino was completely wasted, only having 30 seconds at the end. I enjoyed it, especially the first showdown between Electro and Spiderman in Times Square. I have to say though, it wasn't as good as Spider-man 2 from 2004.

I think Godzilla stood out the most out of all of the other movies. All the big action movies were gaint CG slow mo explosionfest. Which can be done right (Guardians) and also done wrong ( Transformers). But Godzilla was yes a lot of CG, but it was more realistic. The monsters were sluggish, and slow, and it really showed the power being displayed. And the overall movie had a nice calm pace to it, with some intense (MUTO at the train) and jaw dropping scenes (Any scene with Godzilla).

Alex King I think it was more about making her a strong, intimidating, and powerful female lead. At least it wasn't the same "guy saves the helpless girl" trope. Also it was really cool that they focused on more of a familial type love instead of the "romantic love is the most important thing" kind of messages. Instead of classifying her as a bad guy, they created a great role model for young girl everywhere, and taught them that they could save the day too.

Am I the only person who found it disrespectful that one of them said that the foreign audience is okay with a stupid meaningless plot? Like hello? There are amazing foreign movies out there that are so much better than american movies ... just because that guy personally didn't see a good foreign movie or something doesn't mean that the foreign audience doesn't realize that a movie isn't good? seriously that's just disgusting ........

i thought the same thing. the reason why american films are dumbed down is for MOST of the american audience, not for foreign audiences. i like the transformers films (except for number 2), but i agree that they are just explosions and action, and the reason why is because it caters to most of the american audience

I don't think that's what he meant. I think he meant because it is originally in english, for translation purposes, it is easier if there is little dialog and a simple plot (i.e both foreign and domestic markets suffer).

not necessarly because most american films that are played in foreign countries have subtitles that even have explanations in them if there is a phrase or a word that isn't as well known or means the same thing in other cultures.
@3195Rafa

When American films play in my country they are just putting subtitles and no one has any problem since most films are subtitled and people know their way around a second language like English. They are not missing anything and they can very well understand when the plot and dialogue are shit. What he said was completely malinformed about foreign audiences and as far as I know Americans are the only ones that translate, dub and remake foreign films because the audience is too dumb to read subtitles and doesn't understand something that isn't in English. He is just an idiot for saying that...

I think you misunderstood what he was trying to say. He was saying that a lot of the work and humor that goes into actual acting and voice is lost when the work is translated into another language. There are several jokes or other humorous things that don't carry over to other cultures. So, considering this, I believe he meant that instead of making a refined, well done movie that may not be as well understood across the world, Hollywood is just going for widely accepted humor (aka slapstick) and trying to gather all audiences in one movie. As has been proven time and time again in recent times, when you try to appeal to everyone, you end up disappointing them. Also, please avoid the whole "Oh Americans are so dumb" argument because that is a ridiculous generalization that ends up making you look like the dumb one.
@AntUnderscore
@AntUnderscore 10 жыл бұрын
You completely missed the point of his argument. Let me simplify it: A complex joke that involves American cultural references/experiences as the basis for its humor will not translate into Mandarin. A kick to the balls or a fart is "funny" (in a manner of speaking) no matter what language you speak. These films need to make money overseas. The easier it is to translate for the Asian market, the more money the studios believe they will make. They have not been wrong yet. It has nothing to do with the intelligence of foreign markets and everything to do with the laziness/greed of the film executives.
@wasteoftime5848
@wasteoftime5848 10 жыл бұрын
Ärzteboy Transformers 4, Pacific Rim and Maleficent made more money on the foreign markets than in America. These argue his case more than I ever could. You have less business speaking for the world than any of us dumb Americans. We have no singular "American" culture, it varies greatly across all states and regions.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was extremely predictable. Anyone who's watched more than 5 average hollywood movies could guess what was going to happen 15 minutes into the movie. Saying that it's unpredictable either means you haven't watched hollywood movies before or you've turned off your brain for the duration of the movie.

It was kind of predictable(read as very predictable) - but it doesn't hurt it that much. It was fun, the characters were interesting, the acting was good, the suspense was intense(even though you had a pretty good idea about what would happen). All in all a great movie.

I agree that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was an entertaining and maybe even above-average summer blockbuster, but I'm not on board with all the praise surrounding it. It was pretty predictable even though there were several story and character arcs that were well integrated into the story. In the end it was a solid sci-fi action movie with more brains but never really rose above that.

Though there's recently been a huge trend in re-envisioning classic fairy tale and victorian horror characters (usually in awful action movies like Hansel and Gretyl and Van Helsing, or that bore of a Snow White remake), Maleficent actually succeeded in re-telling a story in a way that actually succeeded, and engaged the audience with its characters. I'd argue it's the best thing Disney's done in years.

Completely agree. TASM2 was forgettable garbage with maybe one or two well executed scenes, but X-Men, Winter Soldier, and Guardians (oh, ESPECIALLY Guardians) blew it out of the water.

My favorite movie of the summer was How to Train Your Dragon 2. It was such an excellent sequel that further develops the characters, the story and world and doesn't try to "recapture the charm of the original" and descend into a repetitive mess like most sequels like this. My biggest disappointment was X-Men: Days of Future Past. Not bad by any means, but after the 10/10 masterpiece that is First Class, this felt like a major step back in many ways, and it captures the worst aspect of comic books. It was a continuity-management movie, basically.

httyd2 made me feel pure wonder and simple joy the likes of which i don't remember ever having felt watching a movie before. i'm sure i did when i was little, but i don't remember it. it was so beautifully animated, the characters were so realistic and different from one another, astrid and hiccup had a realistic relationship! that never happens in movies and a kids movie gave us a healthy, real relationship AND IT'S NOT EVEN A FOCUS! it's just there! i have a lot of feelings about the httyd movies

Haven't seen Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but I seriously want to. I had the good fortune of skipping most of the mediocre and bad films of the summer. Guardians, Dragon 2, Edge of Tomorrow and X-Men were all excellent movies. Captain America was too, but it's not a summer film, so. :P Guardians was definitely the funniest though. I spent half of the movie laughing my ass off. It was a very fun and enjoyable film. Not the best ever, but it was exactly what it needed to be and set out to be.

Biggest disappointment of the YEAR was Maleficent. FWI THERE WILL BE SPOILERS!! Changing the ending was the worst thing you can do. I was most looking forward to Maleficent turning into a dragon, kicking-ass, and dying, BUT NO! She didn't even turn into the dragon, her raven did. ALSO, SHE DOESN'T DIE! Disney, I know you want to be family-friendly and girl power, but don't change the source material. That is why the best scene was the coronation scene. STICK TO THE ORIGINAL! Props to Jolie for somewhat saving this abysmal movie. Also, the stupid Prince didn't add nothing to the movie, he was just there to fool the audience to not kiss Aurora so Maleficent can kiss and wake up Aurora. Again, DON'T CHANGE THE SORCE MATERIAL!!!!!!!! Disney, don't "f" up Cinderella. I loved Oz, was ok with Alice, but was disappointed by this. I don't even care if this gets me a SJ t-shirt, I just wanted to say what I've been holding for the entire summer.

I loved Maleficent, because they didn't stick to the original, they reinterpreted the story and shifted the focus from "princess needs a prince" to . Watching Sleeping Beauty story again would be a waste of time, but this movie was pretty awesome.

Couldn't pick a best movie between Godzilla, Apes, and X-Men, although I think that people are giving Godzilla too much hate for being bland, because I enjoyed it a ton and I would even go so far as to say it could be one of the classics of the 21st century. Worst movie was easily Transformers. I was hoping Bay might do something different, but not only was it the same stuff as before, but the one thing that we all went to see (the dinobots) WERE BARELY IN IT!!! That and there was basically no fighting, not even in the finale. And F*CKING MEGATRON! I mean seriously! They were so focused on having three villains in the movie that they screwed them all up so badly that I couldn't even tell who the bad guy was! *ends rant*

I liked Godzilla. It was a little slow in the beginning though. I guess they were trying to build up the excitement because I was super excited when Godzilla finally came. This movie made me cheer. I was darn near tears. lol I can watch it again.

I think X men was a bit overrated. I did like it, but it was another movie dominated by Wolverine. The beginning and the end were great portrayals of the X men and working as a team, but the middle was mainly Wolverine going around with prof X (without his powers), and beast not really doing anything Beast like. Quicksilver was great, but after his big scene, they essentially told him "go home, kid". Did noone have an issue with that? Also there is a whole movie missing between this film, and the end credit scene of the last Wolverine movie. A 'war was coming' in the present day which was the teaser at the end of the Wolverine movie, yet the movie this summer skips ahead many years into the future.

@cinemacocoa
@cinemacocoa 10 жыл бұрын
It "wasn't that bad" only because Jolie is *the* perfect casting for the character and the visuals and creatures were well designed. But the character, *Disney's own character*, cherished throughout their own various franchises as a memorable villain for half a century was completely ruined. Considering how the film is about Maleficent, you'd think they would get the character even remotely right, and as a result it fails completely.

CinemaCocoa You guys do understand Maleficent is based off the original story right?
@cinemacocoa
@cinemacocoa 10 жыл бұрын
Maleficent herself is a Disney creation. If you REALLY want to go into the original story, there are multiple interpretations. In the original tale(s) it is "an old hag" who curses the girl. In another tale, and Ogress (or Evil Step Mother) attempts to eat the princess. In another she's raped in her sleep. I could go on, but there are ZERO references to "Maleficent". She is an original character born from Disney to spice up a fairytale, and while Disney can therefore do what they want with her, I find it incredibly bad that they rewrote her character so completely and called it "the real story". Especially when it isn't even CLOSE to any of the original tales anyway!
