OTT is a lovely preset! I highly recommend to anyone to learn the device and its parameters to really get its full potential. Those threshold bars are super useful for fine tuning the amount of gain reduction/boosts on each band. Cool vid, Ahee.

Actually I did use OTTs on some vocal the other day and I'm leaving it there cause it sounds great. Of course, it is inside a vocal chain where I had cut most of the bass out, plus it's one of those autotuney robotic chorusey parts that kinda sound well when squashed up like that. So yeah, even some vocals may benefit from properly tweaked OTT

I'll adjust the 'high' output gain down to the same level as the mid output. OTT can add a weird filtery sound in the highs so that helps dial it back a bit.

If people don't know how to use a compressor then multi band compression is definitely too advanced. My advice is; learn basic compression and parametric eq'ing, then move on to multi band compression.

ReAKTIV thank you. I've made electronic music since 1992. My first sampler was a 12 bit Ensoniq EPS that I bought with a friend along with two Technics 1210s and a cheap mixer. I still have own and use one of the turntables. I'm an old fart is what I'm saying. I switched to Ableton on version 4 for fucks sake 😀 If you want another advice then it would be to look into getting a Pushtec and Pultec VST for upwards and downwards compression like in the good old days. The pushtec/pultec defined the sound of groups like *The Prodigy* and to me they are Top 3 of all times - both mix-wise and in their songwriting. They were among the first big room techno acts, if not _the_ first. There probably wouldn't be a Scrillex without them. So look into that if you like this sort of compression. Peace ✌️

OTT is a multiband compressor after all! Why is everyone afraid to use the attack and release settings in conjunction with the gain reduction it gives AND THEIR EARS? It is never good to go extreme with multibands because It creates uneven results in audio spectrum. Harsh settings is rarely good and they are only good when you know where to use them. Don't be afraid to be a boomer at first in order learn and break the rules in the end but, you have to know them first!

It's not very informative to A/B the effects of multiband dynamics on individual elements without gain matching the output. Of course when you throw an OTT on your channel strip and whack up the output gain to +13db it's likely gonna sound "better"... that's just because our ears are attuned to prefering loudness. At this point you're not fairly comparing the actual dynamics processing. I do understand the context: you're using these effects creatively, not transparently as part of a mixdown. Still, if you're not careful this is a great way to destroy a tune, and if you're not aware you should be level matching, using a multiband compressor is probably doing more harm than good.

When is it good? Is his methodology correct when utilizing gain staging?
@jakehughes9491
@jakehughes9491 3 жыл бұрын
@@lancemezh6345 I guess it's fine to mess around with OTT creatively in the way shown in the vid so long as you're level matching your input / output. This isn't a mixdown tutorial, so I won't comment on when/how/why you should use multiband compression in that context. I've heard some people say that when you start out you should dial in a value that sounds good, and then back off about 50%. I hadn't heard this when I started so can't comment on it personally, but I can see the wisdom in it: subtlety is key and something that you just learn to get right over time.

Does OTT have an ideal gain for the input or does it adapt automatically to whatever you feed it?
@kevinnkrumah8174
@kevinnkrumah8174 4 жыл бұрын
It will do something to whatever gain you put in. It's both a downward compressor and an upward compressor, so when the gain is too high it downward compresses, and when too low it upward compresses. What you consider ideal really depends on what you're trying to achieve.

The one big problem that makes me reconsider using ott regularly is the fact those band crossfades mess up some sounds’ phase. I have no problem with the plugin itself but people should be aware of this when using it
@Pianet
@Pianet 4 жыл бұрын
Having used a fair number of multi-band compressors I'd say those time setting are pretty strange for use with edm. Usually you'd want a lot more attack in the low end and a lot less release. A 50 ms attack will only affect two full cycles so the waveform will be pretty distorted on sub-bass transients (basically turning sinewaves into ramp waves). And a quarter second release is two whole beats at 120 bpm so the compressor will pretty much stay down.
@Pianet
@Pianet 4 жыл бұрын
Also its pretty clear that if you put heavy compression on something with heavy delay and reverb you are probably gonna wanna turn the dry wet on the delay and reverb down. Or better yet run them after the compressor if possible.
