Those mines make for some great spelunking! Man, I'd have never survived my teen years if I'd grown up with a bunch of abandoned mines within driving distance. I'd be nothing but a pile of bones piled up at the bottom of some deep hole, a pack of pilfered smokes on one side of me and a broken bottle of cheap-ass liquor on the other. Stay safe, so you can keep making these videos for many more years.

When I was a kid back in the 40s and 50s, my Dad worked at a place making acetylene gas out of carbide.... It would come to where he worked (Only three men worked in the whole place( on train cars loaded with 100 pound metal kegs of carbide.... The carbide was mixed with water and as I recall nitrogen gas in a large generator and it would produce acetylene.... It was very dangerous work, but I was allowed to go there and spend time with my Dad and help out.... In the room where the tanks were filled with acetylene there were water sprayers on all the time to prevent an explosion... The residue of the carbide was excreted as a white chalky material like whitewash and there was a complete lake of it from decades of use.... It was a great white expanse of this stuff.... I remember as if it were yesterday.... My Dad also used carbide lamps for his hobby of coon hunting at night which I also got to spend time with him doing....

Jeff, this looks like a mine we were in back in the early 90s a bit south of highway 50. From what I remember the turnoff was fairly near Sand Mountain then a ways south. I don't remember the road. This was probably around 1994. There was a large operating mine just down the hill then. We found lots and lots of silver ore still in that hole. I was at UNR then. I had an uncle who I remember smoked Chesterfields in the 60s. They don't make them anymore?
