Vincent van Gogh, he was a master of brushwork and brightness of colours, - if only he could know how much his paintings are outstanding and now highly rated !

He only sold 1 painting in his lifetime. He was a prolific artist. He painted his most famous painting, Starry Night, in an insane asylum. He was a selfie king.

In my limited exposure to art I find no other artists who paintings I am so emotionally drawn to and can hold so much of my interest. To me, Van Gogh is art. If I could somehow live in his art and move from painting to painting I would.

Fantastique! I especially love the numerous full screens of his work. The on-site interviews with museum professionals and Arles locals is the perfect complement. So much better than any other Van Gogh documentary I have seen in my lifetime.

Artists are often introverts and have problems expressing themselves so they literally talk through their art. I get flabbergasted by the modern approach to art on social media. Where they say everybody can unlock their creativity and that everbody can be an artist. And I do believe like music and writing and dancing some people have the gift and if they do they can realise this gift and work on it. But these idea that we can all write music like the Beatles or paint paintings like Van Gogh is just not true. You notice this in art shows today when one abstract looks much like the orher. With great artists few are chosen but so many join the queue.

Being a good painter is having the gift but apart from this it's just❤a lot of hard work and practising all the time. Today people often see it as a means to business and becoming rich.

@@marypartridge5154Absolutely true. Talent is one thing. Having the time (and materials, and environment) to develop his talent is another. VG’s circumstances are rare and wholly fortunate in that his brother was his ultimate patron, and an art dealer to boot! Proper exposure is practically an afterthought, but even posthumously he is also extraordinarily lucky to have had the family he did.

I’m fortunate to have a supportive partner who allows me to just practice and paint and not do social media… it’s so freeing….i really rather continue in the background then up close and under the microscope 🔬

I saw exhibition and came out crying, as his life was tormented by ill health. They say now his death was an accident caussd by young boys out playing with a gun, we ll never know..also he was colour blind .I never compare artists as so many geniuses .. apart from the Italians Van Gogh Monet Turner the best can see..

Van Gogh actually cut off his entire ear not just his ear lobe. This is a proven fact. The docter who treated himn drew a medical diagram that has been found a couple of years ago.

The guy talking about 7 minutes in reminds me of Jean Paul Gaultier, though I wouldn't say early Van Gogh "lacked talent". By the way I don't know why the other voiceover says "Van Gock". Nobody says this in English. His name is pronounced "Van Goff" or "Van Goe". There's a couple of Van Goughs in the London Tate but they're not his best stuff. A pipe on a chair and a picture of his bedroom, if I remember correctly, both with wonky perspective, as if he'd been at the absynthe! The Orsay Museum in Paris has a whole Van Gogh room with an amazing collection.
@hansolo2121 Жыл бұрын
Zaden Are you joking? His name is not only pronounced Van Goff (English) or Van Go (American) in this world. There are many more pronounciations in the world and all of them are wrong. Except the original Dutch pronounciation. Vincent van Gogh is Dutch and his Dutch name should be pronounced in Dutch. The way Vincent actually pronounced his own name. Vahn Goggghh. And this origional Dutch pronounciation is the ONLY correct pronounciation. Every other way of saying his name including the French Van Gock is wrong. But Van Gock is actually far more accurate than Van Goff or Van Go...

Also the van gogh museum in Amsterdam has a few paintings. And about the pronounciation; all of the english versions; none of them sound like the way it is supposed to be said in dutch. Van Gogh hated his name because nobody outside of the netherlands could say it right and thats why he used 'vincent' as a signature on his paintings.
@ZadenZane10 ай бұрын
@@snorlax4021 isn't it something like "Fon Hhohh" in Dutch? I did a short course in Dutch many years ago and one thing I remember was that Amsterdam sounded like Omsterdom (British pronunciation) and the letter G sounded like hh so graag was like hhraahh ... "ik zou graag wat inlichtingen"... etc ..🤪‼️

The painter with 900 paintings? So he had 900 paintings in his possession at some time?
@Walkman0007 Жыл бұрын
no he had sent them to theo, most of the works most have been in theo's possession. Believe it or not, but there are probably also still lost works ot be found or discovered on peoples attics because they cannot recognise the van gogh' style

not all his works are fantastic, you can see so many pictures of him clearly trying new things, or trying to become more contemporary, and it just doesn't work as well as his true masterpieces of texture and color. i say this because i have paintings, where i'm just trying to understand something. i made one of sunflower field, where i tried different techniques for all the flowers. i hate the painting, i wish i had just painted it with focus.. . 24:30 vs 25:16 don't even look like the same painter.... nothing feels quite like sitting in front of his works. some of them glow, as if they are lit up like an led screen. he painted some oranges in a basket, and this painting hurt my eyes when i saw it. i had to squint. i'm not exaggerating.... some are so full of texture, like the white roses, which in person, is probably the finest painting i've ever seen, it is mind blowing how good it is in person. i rarely lose myself in a painting, and i did, just admiring those roses. the way he sculpted the paint, which made them look real in their own right, he added this swirling background to keep the focus on the plant, yet offering a plentiful texturous wall. then he blends in this simple flat nature to some of the leaves, that don't look like leaves, and some do. style...

The pronunciation of Van Gogh’s name is not open to interpretation. Here, we have Van Goooo, Van Gock, and other places Van Gouch. Tragic that the very reason he signed his paintings Vincent is because everyone notoriously mispronounced his name-in his lifetime-yet here he receives no better treatment-and called two different names in the same goddamned documentary no less! Truly horrific! Just call him “Vincent” if you can’t pronounce his name properly! This is a piss poor documentary and everyone involved should be ashamed.

The dude had no talent. All his pictures look like they drawn by a 5 y/o. 'Impressionism' is a polite term giving to people who cant paint by other people trying to sell their stuff.

Some of his stuff does look childish, like the Dr Gachet portrait and some of his self-portraiture. But his best paintings are more childlike than childish. I saw a thing on telly years back where they compared children's art to modern art and there was a big difference. The children tended to scrawl out a picture and then keep scrawling and keep going and end up just scribbling all over it as if they somehow never knew when to stop.
