I'm not surprised people want to keep their ownership private, with the amount of art that gets confiscated, stolen, vandalized, or destroyed.

@@darylb5564 The paintngs dont get damaged. They pour soup over the glass that protects the painting. Also, if they ever get confiscated by government or by court orders, it' cause either it's looted art or they used the art pieces to avoid taxes and that' why they want to stay private. You shouldn't feel very bad for these people, they sleep well and live in a parallel universe where the law doesn't apply to them.

It's ironic that Vincent Van Gogh was concerned about poor people and depicted their suffering, while now we are concerned about his colors and techniques and what is original and not original of his works. I think we are missing the point of art here.

What a wonderfully made documentary. Really well done. If I owned this painting, I would not want the world to know it was with me. What a headache that would create for me. At the same time, however, I have stood before authentic Van Goughs and have benefited so much from being able to be in the presence of such great art so I see why it is such a shame that the public is not able to bask in the great sensitivity and nuance of this incredible work of art. I see both sides but I lean towards the side of loaning this to a museum or two so the general public can also marvel at and be in the presence of its greatness.

We express our admiration and joy when we see great works of art like the ones by Van Gogh but surprisingly when he was alived, he struggled to sell his paintings for a very small of money. I even read that he cant even exchanged it for a decent meal! So I guess it was his tragic life that got people interested in his works.

Most of these people sadly mispronounce the artist’s name, which is unforgivable for any art historian. It is not Van Go. The gh is a guttural sound in Dutch, similar to the way a j is pronounced in Spanish. Like Jorge, but sharper.

If a private buyer owns the painting, they are entitled to anonymity for their own security. But for them to ever have been able to own such a relevant piece of art history as the last work of a master… shocking! That’s the real story here and I’d point all questions toward the museum for allowing a private sale. It seems there needs to be something done to ensure works of such a level are somehow more protected in the future for public viewing. I was recently lucky enough to stand in front of a full collection of Van Gogh originals from a 2yr period, put together by the National Gallery. You were able to see how his detail and style went on a journey. It’s not just about the solo painting on its own, they do all relate to one another and his overall story. Was such a moving experience. One I will never forget & I’m so grateful that galleries prioritise sharing art & working together to make exhibitions happen all around the world. This is how the great art should always be looked after and circulated. I hope this painting will one day return to a gallery; it matters for his full works to be accessible. His originals hold such a magic you can feel to stand beside.

Museums decide to de-acquisition works of art all the time in order to get money to buy other works, or fund something else the museum needs. They usually sell something when they think they have enough representation of that artist or genre, and will sell something they think is "lesser" than the other works they have. It's hard to imagine that the Met thought this work wasn't worth keeping, but that's what they decided. Lots of these important works end up in storage for decades, and no one sees them at all, which is so sad to me. But if someone has this painting their home, I'm sure they wouldn't want just anyone to know about it. That painting is probably worth close to a billion dollars now, I wouldn't want anyone to know I had that hanging around. I'm sure whoever has it knows that people are looking for it and would love to see it again. I don't know why they never decide to loan it to a museum. Sometimes paintings you see in museums are on extended loan. But we'll probably not see it in our lifetimes, because I think they would have come forward already if they were ever going to share it with the world again. Unless they decide to bequeath it to a museum in their will, which sometimes happens. More likely they would want to pass it down to their family though.

Just as historical pieces of archeology is protected in museums. The problem now is that the rich who purchase these pieces of art.. seem to eventually find themselves in a dire situations.. only to sell them off.. while placing these artworks in a volatile position.. every time they are sold off.. only to never be seen again. The artwork is used for profit, as an investment.. rather than the intended use of what art should be used for.. which is to be exhibited.. displayed and preserved for historical purposes. Most artists if you asked them would prefer their work exhibited and displayed for the world to see them. They would not want their art locked up in a storage room never to be seen. It’s disgusting to think the rich use historical pieces of art for financial profit. I don’t see it as any different to what the Nazis were doing with their racketeering and business deals. There needs to be a line drawn when it comes to these historical pieces of art. where they should NEVER be allowed to be sold privately.

As detracting as possible . The original will be in a secure bonded warehouse , all flight cased up , in Basel most likely, as an inventory number. Just like dozens of other works. Trying to manufacture a documentary with no substantive evidence must be a folly of a job . Next time get something tangible to work with .

it is fascinating to hear such a string of lies. David Nash seems to be the only one speaking in a truthful manner. And that snooty reporter I hope gets nowhere because people have a right to their privacy and have a right to buy a painting. The public doesn’t support artists. The private collectors do. We artists are never recognized by our neighbors only by the kindness of buyers who might come along and purchase something from us.

I'm of two minds about it. The art world is stuffy. Alot of stuffy fake people, very bourgeois people taking advantage of pieces of living history from a bygone era.. there is one photograph of Van Gogh. One. His paintings are the thing that live on. The reason I'm of two minds about it, is the art, even if it's sitting in a crate in a warehouse in Zurich, is being taken care of. Yes museums take care of things too, but they don't own it. While yes I would love to see the original, I know some day, it will be found and again loaned out to a museum, probably by a relative of whoever owns it now, but that's the point of property and ownership. Artists created those paintings to sell. Even though the Third Reich stole the painting and sold it to someone else, man that's just how war goes.. idk but on the other hand when something so beautiful is 400 years old, should it be mandated by the public what we do with it? Man I can go both ways. I really liked this video though, I love art.

A couple notes. If you go into the market square and have an artist draw or paint something for you in exchange for money, it is yours until you sell it. It doesn’t matter if the owner is a museum or a private collector. These people who act like it is their privilege to be able to look at a product that someone painted it’s kind of ridiculous. You should not be so fixated on a piece of art. There are many pieces of art. And there are actually copies of this one I’m sure. You can look at the copy just the same. If you are getting some kind of emotions off of a piece of art, you might need help. This artist was obviously troubled and should’ve been in a proper institution. When people are so self-centered that nothing can give them joy….They are so lost, it just amounts to selfishness. If you are that “depressed”, you are just way into yourself. Go serve others and find some value for your life. If you have no purpose, serve someone in need. Also, if one piece of art is “lost “to the world, the world does not change. Some people are just way too fixated on these material objects.

Vincent Van Gogh died only 134 years ago. Whereas Jesus Christ died, then rose again nearly 2000 years ago and He is STILL recognized as being the son of God and worshipped by literally Billions of people throughout the entire world to this day. When Jesus returns, which may be soon, you may just want to re-consider your stance on Him not being real. Lol 😂

I can't take so-called art experts seriously when they don't even pronounce his name correctly, it's Van Gogh, not Van Go ffs.

No it isn’t. It’s a Dutch name and the gh is pronounced in a guttural way, like the J in Spanish in Jorge, but sharper. Almost as if it were Van Gok, but softer and more guttural.

Extremely disappointing that the Deutsche Welle still dubs videos and documentaries instead of allowing the original languages to be heard. It’s ignorant and stupid and lazy.

The first thing to say is that if one has a very good copy of a given painting - it does not matter at all that it is not an original one. Because the message which radiates from the painting to the viewer is THE SAME. But stil it is a pathology of the brutal, 19th century capitalism that some rich "captain of industry" is still - in 2024 - able to snatch a masterpiece of art from the access of the wide public!!!! Such pathology should be punishable. Thanks do DW for an interesting doc.

Baloney. People have a right to their privacy. The “world” doesn’t own a painting. A collector does. The collector is the one who supported the artist. Not the public. What did “the public” ever do for Van Gogh?
