It was what the Bolsheviks called Russia after the Russian Revolution and when they won the Russian civil war. That is why everyone used Russia and Soviet Union to refer to the same country. The way the Bolsheviks set up their internal subdivisions with Republics and oblasts was largely arbitrary. They intended all power to be in Moscow. It was not a real federation like the US or Canada. Talking about the history of the Soviet Union is just talking about Russia during the time the communists controlled it. It is a period of Russian history like Napoleon's rule is a period of French history.

@panchovilla1583
@panchovilla1583 8 күн бұрын

So did the Mongols try to take over Russia during a later period when "Russia" as a political entity existed? No, I don't think so. Clearly he is referencing the era of Mongol rule and he seems have the bizarre misconception they failed to take over the territory. We can argue endlessly about the true identity of Kievan Rus but the narrator who is passing himself off as a scholar mentioned the Mongols in a documentary about Russia.

I study history from classical times to the present, and no other nation has captivated me quite like this one. Their anthem is unmatched by any other in the world. It's both a pity and a tragedy that they are no longer around to help balance global affairs. The world is too vast for one country to dictate its terms and will to the rest of us. I hope that one day, through the people's will, they may rise again!

Apart from Hastings and Sebag-Montefiore, they often talk academic nonsense (I am an academic myself). For example, 2:01:06 what is White Beard nuttering on about? Gorbachev was in no position to insist on anything. And 2:04:17 to the Lady, it is still an open question whether a socialist economy must fail. There are good theoretical reasons why it must. When I think of Brezhnev, I think of all those space missions to Venus. Between the early 1960's and around 1984, there was about a dozen missions to land unmanned probes on the planet Venus to gather data and to do scientific research. The early attempts burnt up in minutes and the later ones worked for several hours. What was all the necessary to learn about Venus? It couldn't maintain human life or be used as a space colony/base (like the Moon). There didn't seem any additional R&D factor for military development. A vast fortune of hard currency was doled out for the Venus project during the Brezhnev years. It seemed rather pointless outside of the "honor" that the U.S.S.R. was the first nation to explore another planet in our solar system. And all this when the Soviet Union couldn't manage proper crops harvests to feed its population well enough.
