I've been to Texas jail williamson county. I had a misdemeanor, I was scared to death but honestly the inmates were nice to me. I was so depressed and dehydrated an inmate bought me a Gatorade. I was blessed in all honesty.

Yep. That's pretty much how it is. As long as you don't cause problems for yourself or others around you, the inmates in your pod start to build up a relationship with you and you look out for each other

Reggie great doc... Our system is broken... Being someone who was incarcerated with mental problems ..i dug myself out if it, with conceling and apstaining from alcohol.. I know live a rich life. All my charges were dismissed. I went to treatment.. and the court acknowledged, my crimes were comitted in bad mental states... When i was mentally healthy, i finished a college degree, when not ..i was a drunk out of control guy... Its important to get help ... Thanks for this ... Great insight...

I’ve recently turned my life to the Lord and that’s something that He has been showing me. I used to struggle like that and I’ve prayed about how to use my gift of uplifting people. When I did my first time in Pima county reality hits when those doors shut, it humbles you it does man you up and it’s just you and you only rely on yourself it sucks not to show weakness or the fact you can wear your emotions on your sleeve COs look threw you and if you don’t learn from the experience your just a lost soul. My advice is to stay strong and keep your mind busy and your time will go by fast and best part of advice just stay out of jail think twice. I love documentaries like this it really opens your eyes and now it’s been 10 years since I was locked up looking at this gives you a better appreciation for your life cause you do forget what it’s like to be locked up

I was in for a misdemeanor at one point due to one of the episodes of my own mental illness, and another time for a probation violation, in which I failed to notify my probation officer of my out of state railroad employment. Both times, I was in with those who committed crimes from aggravated assault with deadly weapons, to one murderer that was only just brought in, after being discovered in a 20 plus year long investigation. All the inmates of said offences in my block were surprisingly kin like to me and as long as none of us disrespected each other and the CO's treated us with all just the same, nobody really had much of any issue on either side and I made it pretty smoothly up to my court date in which the judge thankfully saw I was trying and let me get back to work with reinstated probation. Only got one more year to go till I'm off the hook for good.

It's great getting a cell to yourself, especially here in UK jails where 2 to 5 ppl a cell in jail. I had nearly 2 weeks in jail with a cell to myself before I got a new celly, I could watch what I want on TV and pee and shi t in peace, and I even knocked 1 out watching some fit birds on TV knowing I was alone 😂 obviously a few mins after the screw , guards last few hour check was done 😂 I remember getting caught knocking 1 out in a single cell open prison in the English countryside years ago after spending a few years behind bars and on my last 6 months 😂

As someone who has been to jail before, they left out the truly worst part of county jail: Going to court. Getting woken up with hundreds of other guys at 3am, having to be handcuffed on your hands and on your ankles, getting on the bus, waiting all day to see a judge, all while wearing the shackles, and all you get to eat is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and some milk or juice. Then having to go back on the bus back to the jail at night after the hellish day, and repeat this court process multiple times until you get sentenced.

I went to jail for 9 months. First three days are the worst. After that like the dudes were saying keeping your mind busy, meeting decent inmates, taking advantage of all opportunities to dude things helps a lot and speeds time up. Once you get a routine you’ll get used to it. You don’t have much of a care or track of time and is actually nice overtime.

You ain't seen the worst jail conditions till you go to Harris County Jail (Houston). It's over crowded all of the time, takes a couple of days to be checked and get on the floor. You end up huddled in large holding rooms so tight, you can't lay down. It's loud in those rooms, everyone is steady talking, and you can't sleep if you wanted to. The worst of it all is Inmates are dying in there almost every month.

Welcome to San Antonio, Texas! I sure hope you were able to enjoy some other food and activities here other than our Jail. Great documentary! Most of us here in San Antonio have never been in that building and are blissfully unaware of what happens and what these inmates go through. While I am proud of Texas for being harsh towards felony assault, murder, child abuse, and drunk driving, I have always thought it's a bit ridiculous that we'll lock away a 19 year old who can barely make ends meet as it is. Gainful employment is necessary for anyone to succeed and that isn't possible from behind bars. We should all be looking to our Legislature to make criminal justice reform and bail reform a top priority in Texas.

Your cot all ur scrubs then having to carry it to ur dorm and if you let it touch the floor you have a guard in ur face screaming and making everyone go back and start all over . Then how they believe prison is rehabilitating I went in with some stupid charge and came out with a criminal degree on how to break the law even worse . Meeting new connects wow and if u want the truth the guards are the ones that bring a contraband in . And have no shame in there actions and say ur the idiot that caught cuz ur stupid . But we are the criminals . Women got raped by guards at night and basically could get away with unimaginable acts . Then the tdc does not separate the medically sick contagious inmates from gen. I really enjoyed this. Respect to you as a fellow Englishman doing 4 days in an American prison voluntarily. I did a week on remand in the early 90's in a Victorian prison in Yorkshire. It was still slop out back then. It was not a pleasant experience and I was in my early 20's. I would struggle to do a long sentence as I have a low tolerence of sharing a confined space with anyone except my girlfriend and I need to doing different things and I hate been stuck in one place. Food, bed and clothing are also shocking and I struggled with these too.

I’ve been to jail around July, got arrested in mesquite, but transferred to Dallas county jail. 1 whole month locked up in jail, was mentally exhausting. As a person who has to be moving and doing something it was literally hell for me, I cried 4 times during jail, my cell mate was the best (nicest person I’ve ever met in jail, in general everyone was nice, kinda was expecting the worst however everyone cared about others health) he was trying his best to console me and calm me down when I almost had a mental breakdown due to be locked up and it being my first time getting in trouble. It is the worst for someone who has to be busy….because you don’t do anything other than, eat, sleep, and watch tv or listen the other inmates yell.

The crime doesn’t make a fk. It could be trespassing and you can sit 2 years for a trial because the court systems are backed up. These ppl are arrested and if they don’t make bond, then they sit until their trial which can be years. If they never take a deal with the DA bcuz they’re innocent, they could sit longer than their actual sentence would be. So much for a “quick and speedy trial” the bill of rights guarantees us.

As an American I can say it is true that our Jail and Prison systems in the entire US are dystopian compared to the ones in some European countries like Germany, Finland, Norway and Switzerland. Our justice system isn't actually a justice system, it's a legal system that is faulty in so many ways. This is a system that is more interested in putting someone behind bars for smoking a herb than it is in putting dangerous criminals behind bars. I actually had to take a break from this video when it showed the guy crying, it disgusted me how a man who simply had weed on him is being treated in the same way a violent offender should be treated. It's infuriating how non violent offenders are paired with violent offenders. Speaking of mental illness, people with mental illness are already being neglected by society as is, just imagine the suffering they have to go through in a jail or prison here in the US. There are so many cases of mentally ill inmates being abused by prison guards(They don't deserve to be called correctional officers because they don't act like it) and other inmates and nobody seems to care. Here in the US the mentally ill are the one marginalized group of people who can say that they aren't just being neglected, they are also being persecuted by an unjust system that doesn't view them as equals. Our system is is more interested in punishing people with mental illness than it is in helping them. The fact that man 11 minutes into the video had to keep his conditions secret shows just how marginalized the mentally ill are in the US. Technically the 8th amendment(No cruel or unusual punishment) is supposed to prevent all this but law enforcement is notorious for constantly using loopholes to bypass our constitution. They like to say they are "just bending the rules" but in reality they are bending the rules so much that fissures are starting to show. The elephant in the room are the many innocent people who are behind bars. There are estimated to be thousands of innocent people behind bars here in the US because our incompetent legal system failed them. All because of law enforcement that doesn't peace the puzzle together, corrupt law enforcement, biased jurors, biased judges and the list goes on. What's disgusting about this is that there are people who don't care about the fact that there are innocent people stuck behind bars. Furthermore we have people who get wrongly arrested for simply acting in self defense even though laws like the castle doctrine and stand your ground are supposed to protect the citizen who acted in self defense from any kind of legal problems. As someone who believes in the right to act in self defense, it always infuriates me when I see on the news that somebody got wrongly arrested for acting in self defense. As Americans we like to think that our country is "number 1" in the world but at the end of the day that is all propaganda, our country is definitely not number 1. Perhaps we may be number 1 in military might but when it comes to society, the people are constantly having their rights and liberties infringed upon by a compromised legal system. Don't get me wrong I love my country and it is this love for my country that makes me critical of our legal system and authorities(both local and federal). And I don't consider myself to be either conservative/Republican or Liberal/Democrat as I think both sides are part of the problem. While it's true that the "powers that be" are the problem, so are the people who support them with sycophancy.

Wow, little bit over the top with what they throw people into prison for in Texas. The19 year old kid Alex had a small amount of pot, not even for sale, just for self use and he wound up in there. I'm an Aussie who has done a few years in prisons here in my younger less wise and wild days, but even though pot/grass is illegal here I've been busted numerous times over my 60 odd years with pot/hashish, growing plants outdoors and hydro indoors and not once went to prison for any of it. I was only ever fined, even back in the 1970s when they thought pot was as dangerous as other serious drugs, they still never jailed me for it despite me having a fairly serious record and many years of prison behind me
