I have loved it since I have lived in the 15th arrondissement in Paris where I could see it every day outside my window as a little girl. My mother and I would go up and get our picture taken when they would do caricatures of us on the Eiffel tower. I went back in 2005 with my mother to have a drink on the first floor at dusk watching the lights turn on below. I’m so glad it wasn’t destroyed

It's not just that the view from the top was amazing: it was the first time people had seen the layout of Paris. Remember, this was before the airplane and most had never flown in the air. (A few had been in balloons.) It was a revelation to the visitors to see the entire design of the city laid out before them.

Wonderful documentary of the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of innovation and engineering by Gustav Eiffel, serves as a cultural icon, historical marker, and a symbol of resilience and endurance. More than just a piece of architecture, it stands as a testament to human creativity and the spirit of overcoming challenges, as well as an emblem of cultural identity and a historical symbol. It's up there with the Forth River Bridge in Scotland and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York which were both built around the same time (Brooklyn Bridge a little earlier).. all gobsmacking examples of huge engineering feets of the period... without the aid of electronics and computers.... that we still use to this day. The lift alone in the Eiffel Tower is a marvel in itself. One could only imagine what the Parisians thought of the tower when it was completed. It looks so futuristic in comparison to the amazing architecture it is sharing its space with. Could be a bit biased here, but love the French and their sense of style.

The origin of the iron of the Eiffel Tower Parisian since 1889, the Eiffel Tower, by its metal, comes from the Grand Est region, more precisely near Nancy in Lorraine! In 1887, Gustave Eiffel needed more than 7,000 tons of iron to make the centerpiece of the 1889 Universal Exhibition: he launched a call for tenders won by the Fould-Dupont forges of Pompey, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The company of blast furnaces, forges and steelworks of Pompey supplied all the iron necessary for the construction of the Eiffel Tower and also took care of the puddling. Before being processed, the ore was directly extracted from local mines. Exactly 18,038 pieces of iron were produced by the Fould-Dupont forges for the Eiffel Tower. We can still see their "signature" plaque affixed to one of the pillars of the Tower today!

It is perhaps worth pointing out to the viewer/reader that the Tour de Eiffel was not built from iron but Wrought Iron. Iron proper is very soft and of not much use for anything. Wrought iron is iron that has been folded onto and into itself including various surface impurities very many times. The result is a metal that is extremely tough, where tough may be described as "resistant to shock" and moderately "elastic" meaning that when deformed slightly, it will recover its shape - within limits. Think here of traditional railway carriage/engine couplings; tremendous shocks in the couplings as engines took up the slack . Think also of SS Great Britain, the first ship to be made of metal. Consequently the tower has withstood wind and rain with very little corrosion ever since it was constructed.
@JayKarpwickАй бұрын
To add a bit more, the Eiffel Tower's metal is a specific kind of wrought iron called "puddle iron". "Puddling" produces stronger iron by preventing direct contact between the metal and the furnace's fuel, reducing impurities in the finished product.
