should not pour directly the sisi with it's juice in the rice take it out first the salty juice of sisi then put to the bowl the sisi then squeeze calamansi the calamansi will balance the flavor sometimes we put chop onion and chop fresh tomatoes and mix together to the sisi (in our province that's how we eat the fermented sisi).

As someone not from Mindanao, I can confirm that it is an extremely underrated and absolutely delicious dish. Visited Palm Grill just to try this Tiyulang Itum and I made sure to savor every last drop. Worth it.

Im half Korean half Mexican. I studied college in the Philippines and didnt like macaroni salad too. My Pinoy friends loved it and would always order it when eating in greenwich. I pretended to enjoy it to not offend them but started liking it after a few tries. Its good as long as its not too creamy.

It IS American in origin, inherited during the American colonial period of the Philippines. THIS version in the video is the wrong one as well. It's the "street food" budget style. The real Filipino macaroni salad is almost the same as the American macaroni salad, except it uses fruits (pineapples, cherries, apples), raisins, and native jellies (kaong, nata de coco), usually also with shredded chicken, ham, or bacon bits, and pickle relish. Condensed milk is NOT part of the traditional Filipino macaroni salad. I have no idea why people in Manila think this is Filipino macaroni salad.

I love Macaroni Salad. It is part of my childhood, in the same way most Filipinos love sweet spaghetti, hotdog on stick with marshmallows, and chocolate porridge or champorado. It reminds me of a time when I was young, and life is so simple, and I'm easy to please with food, music and time with my friends. It's pure nostalgia, I guess. Tiyulang Itum is one of the notable dishes in Mindanao. Maybe most people are turned off by the black color, but when I visited my mother's hometown of Zamboanga, and ordered Tiyualng Itum, I love it so much. The broth is beefy, salty, savory, and spicy, which is my kind of thing.

After watching this deo, i visited the restaurant with my wife the next day just to try the black beef soup. We met the chef, and he is such a nice guy. The food was one of the best experiences i had in PH. The soup was so amazing, a taste of traditional Bulalo without veg but rather some special ingredients such as the coconut meat. Rate 9.50 / 10 🥣 😋😋

Well, like the guy said, as a condiment. They should use it like a fish sauce or soy sauce, mix with calamansi and dip your food in. Fried fish (bariles) is really good to dip in this. I would have gone for the fermented fish intestine/viscera sauce (dayok) as one of the worst food. But it is really really good condiment.

I actually think the Macaroni Salad is only trash in the Philippines due to certain factors: - We typically mix Fruit Cocktail and Kaong in the mix ruining the savory flavor profile - Most Filipinos use a generic brand of Mayonnaise which tastes ass (use Lady's Choice instead) - Filipino Macaroni Salad either uses a lot of or too little Mayonnaise; no in-between - Budget Macaroni Salad doesn't use protein (tuna/chicken) - It spoils easily when not refrigerated for a while - Most cooks focus on the sweetness part (she added Condensed Milk which is a crime) when it should be savory There's a lot of worse Filipino dishes out there that are only well-known around provincial areas

We don’t put proteins(tuna and chicken) because it’s called macaroni salad not chicken macaroni salad and we put condensed milk because it’s supposed to be sweet because Filipino macaroni salad is a dessert 😊

There are a lot of delicious foods in the Philippines, but the cardinal rule is never let a Filipino choose your food as you will end up with something horrendous. But go to a BBQ restaurant, and have BBQ anything, garlic fried rice and deep fried squid rings and you will never want to leave. Not to mention that donuts are absolutely heavenly in the Philippines. There is no comparison.

as a Filipino, i agree. A lot will instantly ask any tourist to try balut as a dare. Its best to do their own research first and watch food blog like from Best Food Review show as reference.

mayonnaise sourness is disgusting when paired with sweet. i don't even like that, a better recipe is just a condensed milk and all purpose cream (better alternative to mayo, for thickener and creamier with no sour taste) 😏
