What makes this master class even more impressive is the fact that the PHENOMENAL So Hyang IS NOT well here. Some time prior to this event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from her most recent bout with severe pneumonia.(Eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her doctors advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, around this same time, she said she was experiencing vocal cord issues. She thought her singing career was over, so she wanted to sing one last time. Afterward, she disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. She returned in 2020. Not only is she aging in reverse, she sounds better than ever before, if that's even possible. Her vocal range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE.

Believe it or not, the day before that performance she had been hospitalized for pneumonia. The doctors ordered her not to sing but she didn't want to disappoint the audience and she did this super performance!! 💪🏻🎤🤩

No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of. You can tie your behind to a piano and it will prove futile because Sohyang's performance will literally suck you into the emotion and power she exudes, piano and all! She is the most magical singer I have come across in my entire six and one half decades on this planet. Sohyang is a once in a lifetime singer. The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh? The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to _really_ pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message. Other than this one performance, we know of only two other times Sohyang has performed this rendition of "You Raise Me Up," both in 2018. When she changes key there a couple of times near the end of the song and belts those high notes so powerfully, you expect her to actually lift off the stage and go into orbit! Yes, Sohyang is famous for throwing in everything and leaving it all on the stage--including the kitchen sink! It was mentioned before, but just to emphasize the fact, that Sohyang was just recovering from another of her unfortunately chronic bouts with pneumonia. Her doctor advised her to not sing but she simply did not want to disappoint her fans - so, she stepped onto the stage and created another masterpiece. The man who is featured in the video is Shane Falan from the group Westlife. They covered/recorded the song in 2005. The song was originally written/recorded by the Irish/Norwegian duo, Secret Garden. However, Josh Groban's 2003 cover/recording of the song is the most popular, a worldwide hit.

You guys might be interested in something a little less angelic from sohyang, her performance of ‘mona Lisa’ from her stint on the ‘king of masked singer’. In this show she took on the character of ‘old lady’ & set a record for the show staying 7 weeks as queen. Many people will tell you that she can sing anything & that is certainly very true, although after been a fan of hers for maybe 8 years now, I have never seen her sing country or full on opera ( I have heard her sing in a semi operatic style) but I have no doubt whatsoever that if she chose to tackle these genre’s, she would be very successful. Not only with sohyang, but often when someone puts in a great performance, you will often come across people in the comments telling you that the performance was great, despite been I’ll at the time, as if to suggest that they can sing even better than this. This happens a lot with sohyang, not because they are trying to push people in to been impressed by the level of performance,even when not 100%, but because this amazing lady, since first contracting cancer, and subsequently beating it, in her early 20’s, her health isn’t great as a result of this & the treatment she received. She suffers with numerous bouts of pneumonia & has hepatitis B, which she contracted through a blood transfusion. The reason I am saying this now is that somewhere in the comments, probably for every sohyang performance, you will find comments like ‘she was ill, the doctor had told her not to perform & she came straight from the hospital to perform’. These comments aren’t quite correct, and I think they’ve been said wholeheartedly in good faith, just the facts are a little awry. The truth is that it is this performance of ‘you raise me up’ where sohyang had been in hospital with a bout of pneumonia & was over the worst but hadn’t fully recovered, and yes, she had been advised by the doctor not to perform, but she went ahead as she did not want to to disappoint the people who had come to see her, but she was not literally on her death bed one minute & on stage the next😂😂 anyone, like myself, who has become very familiar with sohyang over a number of years , would probably agree that she looks very tired, rather pale & like she has lost weight in her face, and IMO , although still an amazing performance, I feel it is one of her weaker performances, which I think shows what she is capable of. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I feel a little bit of the sohyang magic is missing, a little bit like she was having to worker harder than usual to get to those notes that she can do in her sleep normally. I have to point out that in no way do I think this isn’t a good performance, it’s a fantastic performance, but for the last 8 years, my ears have been blessed daily with hearing Sohyang’s beyond amazing vocals, so I am well aware of what my favourite female singer can do & I openly admit that I am been really picky here, most people that aren’t so familiar with sohyang wouldn’t even notice anything was amiss. Great to see sohyang on your channel, the more people that react to her performances, especially here, in the west, the more the wonderful world of sohyang will hring ligjt in to peoples lives. thanks guys, another new subscriber👍
