@@nicolataylor6011 Todays gymnasts arent relying on their skills but they were in the 70s? That doesnt make sense when gymnasts today are performing skills that are unquestionably more difficult. Is a 10 as impressive when its skills that are kid shit by today's standards? I dont think so. Its certainly not the most impressive moment in gymnastics history. Nadia would lose to literally any elite gymnast in the last 30 or 40 years- and there are plenty of extremely graceful gymnasts still. Also, I dont find belly beats graceful. Everytime she slammed into the bar with her hips, I cringed. It used to routinely result in bruising & often knocked the wind out of gymnasts if not positioned correctly. Also Teodora Ungureanu did a way more graceful and creative bars routine back in the 70s- Nadia was overscored in my opinion.

@@RebeccaTaylorTillery I have been in gymnastics many years through quitting years ago, I still stop by my original gym every Saturday due to the fact that my sister now coaches there. Every time after we get back from the gym we compare hip bruise’s the next day. Though when actually doing the skills it doesn’t really hurt all that bad, that’s only on the rare occasions the previous bruising healed. I remember when I actually took classes bars was ALWAYS my favorite. When the coach would stand by and watch my routine I remember after my pull over I went for a cast and when the impact of the bar got to me I slipped off due to the shock of the pain. There where many nights I would cry myself to sleep due to the pain of the sport. I was pushed to my breaking point by coaches my legs where always over stretched, my arms sore from the intense workouts, my hips and thighs bruised, my hands cut and bloody, though my mind was focused on my passion. I never really saw my own pain until I left the sport behind. Even if the coaches are kind the sport is extremely painful!! It’s also underrated how much strength it takes, mentally and psychically it’s truly difficult.

Do you mean the hip beats? I did those, and they don't hurt (though I suppose if the bars were set up wrong or something they would). The bar hits at the break between the leg and body (notvyhe hip bones), and your body just kind of wraps around the bar and springs back. It was actually pretty fun.

This selection of top 5 is arguable, but misses one. In 1972, In 2 seconds on the uneven bars with her back flip, Olga Korbut changed the sport to spectacular. Everybody in the stadium knew it. A 10 pt score did not exist in 1972, but it should have. The judges almost got lynched. I know. I was there. I also saw Nadia in 76, Retton in LA, & Boginskaya in Barcelona (she had a rare grace). Nadia's 10s in Montreal were earned, but she was riding a wave started by Olga, and without the charm. For those who write that gymnastcs has gotten more difficult 50 yrs later,of course. Every sport evolves. But Olga's back flip to a spin-around the lower bar, and catching the upper bar - backwards, is illegal now, because it's too damn dangerous. Korbut changed the sport overnight.

for those of you who are saying that it makes you sick that "these coaches put medals over their athletes because they are competing with injuries" all I have to say that you probably are unfamiliar with chinese/japanese culture. they value honor more than anything, most of the times they would rather die than bring dishonor to their family and country. also, their mentality is so much different, they are tought from the young age to surpress emotions, pain especially. best example I can give you is when shaolin masters are breaking bricks with bare hands. the real purpose of doing this is not to show that you can break rocks (even though it's still very impressive). they do it with a pokerface infront of the public, sometimes with a scream to cover their pain, but they won't show it on their face. oh, they feel pain definitely. but for them that's the real mastery.

Kerri said in an interview it was her choice to do the 2nd vault. Knowing she was injured. To bring home the gold medal for her team

Nadia’s performance was amazing but I don’t understand how she got a perfect 10 when she hopped a bit on landing and also looks like she accidentally hit her legs on the lower bar at 4:02. Those would both be deductions today

Yea, if you watch Nadia's complete performance it utterly blows everything else away. I'm glad you put it last in the video to allow the others to look impressive but when compared to what Nadia achieved they aren't anywhere near the same league. Perfect 10s on 5 events from a 14 year old? God-like.

I will never get over the fact that McKayla was being sexually abused and performing at this level. The trauma these athletes have through for this sport is so deplorable

I'm old enouigh to remember watching Nadia Comaneci (sp?) get all those 10s at the '76 Montreal Olympics...even to my 8-year-old self that was jaw-dropping. I have no idea how people can do any of this shit, it's incredible.

Nadia will remain as the greatest gymnast of all time. Biles is good as well but Nadia is better. If she wasn’t forced to retire early (19 years old) by her own government then getting medals is easy. She’s the only gymnast who’s able to get a perfect 10 again and again and again. She’s a legend!

Something about this video with Simone biles made me realize something. Now, I'm quite a misogynist. I don't like women. But.. black women in particular go through what most men go through. Most men are considered ugly by beautiful women. Most black women are seen as ugly by most men. And for a moment, I saw triumph that was not judgmental by status or visual non-complacency, but undoubtful skill. It made me realize I'm only cared for when I'm entertaining or useful. And it made me realize she was only loved if she was entertaining or useful. I reached a middle ground. I almost cried at the idea something so different could go through as much hardship as me. When I had a genuine epiphany.

On the one hand, I think it's wrong for coaches to allow their athletes to compete when theyre seriously injured (even if the athlete wants to), but on the other hand I get it. I severely sprained my ankle and broke my foot landing a jump wrong during a dance performance where I was one of the lead dancers. At first I thought I'd just rolled my ankle but then realized it hurt too much for that, but I went ahead and finished performing the piece anyway. It was the last song of the last time we'd be performing for that season so I wanted to see it through. I could barely walk afterwards and was in a lot of pain, but I'd still do the same thing if I had to do it over again.

Did anyone else notice that they said McKayla was 26 years old? She was not 26 years old.

The background music in this was highly annoying and unnecessary. Athletes performing with broken knee's, etc, is crazy. Gymnastics is a highly dangerous sport. I have to say these performances look pretty simple and tame, compared to the expectations today.

Makayla Maroney was truly old for a female gymnast when she landed that vault. 26 is practically geriatric in that field. So yeah, she's amazing.
