First and only time I did that, I backed up a couple of feet, put it in 4 wheel and gunned it. That trailer came out of the water sideways when the one spring shackles broke out of the frame and let the axle turn 45 deg. Spent the next few hours under the bridge welding everything back together. I got lucky and only lived 1/2 hr from the ramp and had what it took to fix things. You just got to love boating! 😁

My former step-son did something similar. Borrowed Grandpa's boat. 2 inch coupler on a 1 7/8 inch ball. Trailer came off, hit a power pole. It was Grandpa's fault because he didn't have insurance on his boat.

With that style of coupler if the slide that locks on the ball is not lubed well and opened and closed , without being over the ball, it will not open all the way and of course it just sits on top of the ball! And of course you have to check it! The spray lithium grease works great for that! I have cut them off of new trailers and welded on a "Bull Dog", if it's not on the ball correctly it will not lock! The only times I've seen a "Bull Dog" fail there was the bumper and/or part of the truck hanging on it.....LOL! Great, as always, Cap'n!

Indeed... Really frustrating because it's a hidden failure. You can pull the handle up correctly, but the latch/tongue thing won't be open. And additional pressure won't do anything once your hitch is on the wrong side of the tongue. Worse even than that, it's actually possible to fix it by being a dummy and putting your fingers in the danger hole. Never put your fingers in the danger hole.

1 7/8" ball & 2" coupler with rusted chains. Maybe warn half in two from dragging on the road. You never need those safety chains or tie downs. Until you do.

Looking at that rock you wisely collected I always carry wooden chocks in my car. If you have to jack the rear wheels for a puncture there is no hand brake working. I had a car roll off the jack even when the front was lifted. I always specify a spare tyre also. Our rescue services say they are having a major problem with cars having no spares especially as our decrepit UK potholed roads are bursting so many tyres.

The tide doesn't look that low. That can happen at some places when the tide is low and the ledge of the ramp location is unknown. Good plan on getting it out, but I don't think the towboat knew what you suggested him to do. The ball on the truck looks older than the trailer so maybe a new purchase of a trailer? Just excited to go for a boat ride. But I want to talk about the elephant in the room... That's not where you should hang your keys! OMG, when he said to go with a smaller ball, that's a recipe for disaster. That won't lock onto the ball correctly.

I have a similar trailer. Often times the ball latch doesn't release the movable latching mechanism all the way back. You lower it and basically it sits on top of the ball.

One time my dad, brother, and I were driving from NorCal to SoCal. My dad was towing a trailer for his buddy who lived down south and all seemed normal- he’s towed plenty of times before. We ended up getting pulled over 1/4 way through the drive and the CHP officer said that the trailer was swinging. My dad and the cop assumed it was speed related, so he told us to take it easy and slow down. Just a warning. Now we’re about 1/2 through and we’re in Oakland, at 0800 in the middle the morning commute. Suddenly, we feel a shudder and I look back to see the camper trailer drifting away from us- but somehow still riding within the lane as it moved forward/ started to slow. My dad reacted quickly, he hit the breaks and slowed down to the speed of the trailer. He let the trailer make contact with the tailgate and somehow guided it off to the shoulder. Roadside services just happens to be on the freeway behind us and pulled over to see how he could help. The jack was completed ground off and the chains were gone too. We found out, right then and there, that the ball was too small for the hitch. My dad and I cautiously laugh about this every so often. We always ask ourselves, “Can you imagine what would have happened if it had started to spin or went sideways?” I honestly can’t. All I know is it would have caused something catastrophic. Please- Always check your ball and hitch before departure.

I have a few quotes and questions for this video: “How did this guy reach this age making these kind of mistakes?” Rusty ball & chains. It’s my 3rd year owning a boat and the most important lesson I’ve learned is to keep all my equipment well maintained & inspect everything before heading out. I now do this with my cars and homes. I’ve created a maintenance schedule for everything. “This is why women live longer than men.”

I learned a looooong time ago it pays to keep a small can of lubricant spray in the truck. Along with a roll of Gorilla duct tape. And a hammer. And a........ :)

I pulled out my driveway with my enclose trailer in tow. As soon as I straightened out, the trailer tongue hit the pavement. I had it on the ball, but forgot to push the latch down and lock it in place. Luckily the safety chains stopped the trailer from walking away. Cuz, you know, that's what safety chains are for.

I always put a padlock on the little latch that holds the trailer on to the tow ball if that latch was not pinned down some way you go over a bump and sometimes the trailer comes off

I always grease the trailer end of the connection. The grease stays in there forever.

Those are cheap trailer parts, we only use those ones on small boats. Bigger boats have a much more robust mechanism
