The couple without power navigated to and docked better than most people on this channel who have twin motors, and they did it without fighting and yelling at each other.
@OttoTheWeim Жыл бұрын
I have a hard and fast rule on my boat. If anyone is in the water near the boat, the motor is OFF. Even picking up fallen tubers. I loop within 10 yds and power off. It is too easy for an accident to happen like someone bumping the throttle into gear. It’s also easy to guarantee that doesn’t happen. If there is someone in water, motor is completely off.

As a kid in the 80's we had a brand new Boston Whaler 13.5' boat w/ a Evinrude 40 HP that was kept in a boat slip. After watching these types of videos there is no way in hell that I would go through the boat ramp/trailer debacle every time I want to take the boat out. For me, keeping it at a marina is a must. Too big of a hassle to deal with a trailer & too much room for error/failure.

I agree with you that "slow and steady wins the race." I rode with a captain once that said as we approached the dock, "Driving your boat onto your trailer is for show," and he was 100% correct. I watched him as he gingerly guided his boat onto his trailer with a line.

Honestly I'm a little shocked at the lack of assistance offered to the couple without power. Is it normal to ignore a boat in distress out there? Sure, they did a great job of getting in by themselves, but it would of taken seconds for one of the multiple jet skis active at the time to offer a tow-in....yet it seems no-one could be bothered. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but a boat in distress takes precedence over everything. You stop whatever you are doing and at least offer to assist.....who knows when it might be your turn.

I own 5 boats and the majority of landing problems getting the boat lined up were coming in too fast to a trailer too deep in the water. Don't have the bunks fully submerged. Try submerging only the back half or 3/4 at most. Then quit being so lazy and crank on the rest of the way. At least you will be aligned better. CC Captain also has good insight so listen to his tips before some of you idiots go out again.

Breaking down in a car leaves you on a road with the likelihood of another car coming along if you have no backup plan. Boats break down more often due to their environment, (meaning higher maintenance than a car), which leaves you subject to wind, tides and a rocky shoreline . . . I'm not surprised over the amount boating breakdowns and mishaps you see due to the greater logistics needed to operate a Boat vs a Car, but I am surprised at how many don't take that fact into account and throw caution to the wind while risking their life and others. A friend insisted on taking his Pregnant Wife along on a fishing trip we made out of Petersburg Alaska early one morning. We were 20+ miles out, in Thomas Bay and the Fog decided to roll in behind us about the same time she'd decided she might be having a Baby in the not-too-distant future. She kept saying she was fine, but my buddy (her husband) and I looked at each other knowing Urgency was the word of the hour, and regardless of what happened, not to show panic. Thomas Bay had a small entrance protected by sand bar and 15 miles of open water beyond that to Kupreanof Island. This was long before GPS and my LORAN was unreliable in the SE Ak islands. I had 3 compasses on board and two waterproof NOAA Charts, Two Radio's and an EPIRB in case we needed coast guard help. I was in a Boston Whaler 22' Outrage w/ a Bimini Top & 250 hp Yamaha w/ a Honda trolling (emergency) motor. Nice self-bailing boat, w/ plenty of spares on board, and kept you warm in winter, so that wasn't at issue. I shot a course for just left of the T Bay opening (that way, when you arrive and don't see your target, you know it's to your right), made the bay opening and punched it towards Kupreanof Is. Came up to Kupreanof w/ room to spare and followed the shoreline back into town w/o a hitch. She delivered a Fat baby that evening and I was Thanked repeatedly for being prepared to deal with the weather and gettin back OK in what seemed a normal fashion. The Truth is, my bud and I were both concerned, Very Concerned ! . . . but we stayed kewl, which helped her to be calm as well. SE Alaska contains 70% of the U.S. Coastline within it due to all the Islands that make up that part of the county. It's a Rockpile up there. It's where the U.S. Coast guard likes to Recruit from on the West Coast because of the situational awareness it takes to navigate around there. Nowadays a good GPS is Gold on a boat when the $h!t hits the fan.
