The Beta 480rr is light, it's powerful, and it's undeniably sexy... but is this Italian Princess worth $10,000?

You might really want to look at the MSRP on all the other bikes out there to re align your thought on what is expensive. New Honda 450L: $10399. Beta 480 RR race: $9999.

He did a review on the Honda 450 and basically called it an overpriced red almost-ktm. The crf450 is trying to compete with the beta and ktms thus is expensive like they are. Anywhere near 10k is a lot of freaking money for a dirt bike.

I haven't seen your videos for a while. Watching this one reminds me of just how good they are. The experience in filming, which shows. All the angles. The decent, info packed voice over. The terrain and... well, you. Reminds me when I first got into motorcycles a couple of years ago...i was taken quickly down the dual sport worm hole by everide vids.

Everide I love when you ride these expensive bikes. I remember you use to talk crap on them being twice the price. I have a 2017 Husqvarna 701, I've rode for 100s of miles on a beat KLR650 and a New DR650 with all the mods and heavy springs and neither come even close to the 701. If you are ever in PA let me know Ill gladly let you ride my 701 so you can see why at double the price of a DR650 is still a great deal.

Sir that bike fits you, looks really really sweet, love it. MAN O MAN, it looks fast.. Umm, I don't think at this point in the game you can call yourself a average rider, you have the best practice playing field in the US and you are doing quite well my friend. 10 grand is not bad for a bike as good as it looks like it would be considering the new honda 450 is in the 10 grand price mark as well, i was saddened to see that being the price on the new honda. Man buddy, we got us a Jeep. It fits the family and wife better, I still have the Africa twin, but the wife and I have been having so much fun with the Jeep we haven't rode the AT much this year. It is nice to see you are still doing what you do and making such great videos still you rock sir. Thanks for sharing my friend and I hope you and your family are still doing well. Keep up the great inspirational videos and have a blessed week. dale

I have been riding Casey's Africa Twin a lot lately.......... And I still love my DRZ. I've been on a lot of different bikes thanks to different friends trusting me to bring them back in one piece. Witch I do most the time. But after riding them I still can't wait to get back on my DRZ. EXCELLENT VIDEO AND GREAT REVIEW!

Great review. Regarding being faster on the DRZ, I'm sure it's because you're more comfortable on it, and maybe because the course wasn't something that highlights the strengths of a bike (gnarly single track, where weight really matters). Like you and Berry say - it's the rider not the bike. Most motorcycles these days are excellent and most average riders can (or are willing to) only ride to 50-60% of the bikes capability, so it doesn't matter that one bike is 20% better than another one. One personal example is that I have a 2013 KTM 200 and a buddy of mine has a 2002 KTM 200. Aside from the e-start on the newer bike, they feel almost the same, despite one being twice the price of the other.

Don't think most dual sports feel like a road legal ktm 300. I've ridden one and I agree with your views on it. But try a ktm 500 exc for a week if you can. You may just have to sell your dad jeans lol.

Was considering one of these and ended up going with the WR250R mainly because I already have the Yamaha credit card, but after doing a little off road riding I am glad I did my dirt skill needs a lot of improvement and the 250R is going to be more than enough bike for me for a long time

It’s funny to read people’s opinion of Beta when the have never owned or been on them. Beta makes a very, very good product. I have ridden Honda for many years since 1986. I bought a 17 beta 300 Race. Hands down the closest to a factory race bike I’ve ever been on. No regrets. Excellent machine

Thanks so much for your time and efforts regarding the Beta which rates high on my list. One thing I believe you did not mention or I may have missed , can you talk about the maintenance schedule. Most important would be time frames for valve adjustments and bottom end rebuilds. That seems to be the issue when comparing the old school Japanese DS to the new high tech European bikes. It always a trade off. But I sometimes prefer reliability of say a WR 250 r or DRZ to the sweetness of the current European bikes Thanks, Rich

As always thank you for your videos. I follow you and Barry the most out of all KZbin. One thing I would like to ad to the unfortunate detail about Beta is there are no Beta shops. I can buy a Beta here in Seattle and it does come with a one year warranty but no one to fix the bike. My buddy is having some electrical issues with his brand new Italian princess and having to pay for it to get fixed by a KTM dealership. Just a small detail but kind of sucks cuz I really want to buy a Beta but not sure what to do if mine had a little bug in the beginning of it’s break in

A buddy of mine has a Beta and in the limited amount of time that I have spent riding it, I have to agree with the majority of what you said in the video. The power is amazing but to me it feels a bit bouncy and unstable. Lack of experience could definitely be a contributing factor though. Well done!

Nice review. Hope one day you can get your hands on a KTM 2018 EXC-F 350 Six Days and review it! (adjusting anything you can before hand so it suits you good for the review comments, etc., specially suspension) I have one (I would gladly would try to get close to where you leave so you could try it, but I live in another Country) and I also pay attention to the ergonomics but not the ones related to where the levers are, seat comfort, height, etc., but to the maintenance part of it. I am finding that the KTM's lack ergonomics regarding the location of quite some things regarding maintenance (oil change for example vs. japanes, like Honda's). Nice drone takes as usual too. Cheers.

I've sold my soul to own new KTMs, to include a 2016 350 EXC and a 2017 250 XC-W, but not after spending the same amount of money to own, break and rebuild used KTMs. It's not just the $10k to 12K of the purchase price of a new bike, but the extremely short maintenance intervals of these amazing european bikes. A steering stabilizer and the right tires for what you're riding can change everything along with getting the suspension revalved for your weight and riding style.

Seems like an ideal time to score a pair of your favorite dunlop's or tkc 80s and run this test again to really get a benchmark for what a "choicey" bike like this could do...in the right hands, Vs Japans best 400cc Adv bike..? Tires always made it massive difference for me I'd like to see this explored a little further. Hard compound tires could be squirrely on hardpack for sure...nice ghost riding with you. That's some harsh Badlands. You must have Lloyd's of London dirt bike testing insurance.

You're quicker on the bike you are most comfortable on, have the most experience with and have the most confidence with. I'm faster on my WR250R than my buddies CRF250R for the same reasons. Good review.

Interesting that you felt it's high speed off road stability wasn't great, that's one of its strongest areas for me and my 480 (set up for me though, and with proper knobbies) I dont get to ride open flowy stuff like you do very often though, here in western Washington things are tight, technical, and gnarly. I'd love to let my princessa loose out there! I'm planning a moab trip for next summer, should be a blast.

Comfort and familiarity with a bike are HUGE when it comes to riding fast... and the DRZ is no slouch. As for sex appeal... the only folks drooling over any dual sport are other dual sport fans, nobody else looks twice even when the bike looks sexy as hell to us.

Would love a bike with more power than the DRZ however the main concern I have with these high tech bikes are the fuel mileage and how far can it go without putting one of those oversized tanks on. The DRZ and DR can go 140miles plus which for me who likes to ride from a coastal area to the mountains and hit the alpine trails is huge. Another concern can it ride 12 plus hours a day, day after day with minimal maintenance? Bikes like the 690, 701 and AJP have very wide turn radius' and are a challenge for the tight mountain switchback. The DRZ and DR are awesome machines and fills all my needs I just wish they had that awesome power I crave for the street. Weight is not much of an issue for me so spending the 10k plus for these high tech bikes is too much knowing that I will have to give up some of the awesomeness that is provided by the DR and DRZ.

Ghost race results show that most of our talents are the limiting factor, and familiarity means a lot. And that means, usefully to me, to blow away the fog that makes me think a lighter, newer bike will make a huge and immediate difference. Shake that off, and make the decision on more tangible and practical factors. Thanks for that. Still, lighter by 65-80 lbs over the DRZ400S would be nice......

Thank you for comparing this bike to the DRZ.... I have been seriously considering jumping to the 430RR-S, but instead, I think I will refresh by DRZ's Suspension and stick with the old gilr! I really like it, but I often wonder if I would be that much faster on the Beta? As the Cliche goes, its the rider not the bike...Ride what your comfortable with! Thanks for the review!

Turn signals does not a dual sport make. What is the oil capacity? Maintenance intervals? How strong is the subframe? Aftermarket adventure support? Fuel capacity? Fuel economy? Yes, economy can vary, but 2 gallons at 70mpg or 3 gallons at 50mpg is very different than 2 gallons at 35mpg. I suspect that, like the new CRF450L, this is an enduro bike, and not really a dual sport. Just my two cents.

Nice review for sure but I’d like to add my opinion to the mix. As dual sport bikes have their place, they do not excell at either the street or dirt and about the only advantage is getting you to trails if you happen to live halfway close to them. Where I live, I’d be wore out riding on the street before I’d make it to the trail head. What I’m saying is, it’s hard to beat a truck and a motocross bike set-up. Get to the trail ready to ride and ride till you’re tired then load up and head home.

Great bike, but doesn’t really belong in the dual sport range... Oil plus filter and valve adjustment every 30 hours, piston and other related change every 90 hours. The reliability is by far not of a dual sport, but of a race bike, because that’s what it is. Loved watching the video, though! :-)

No, i meant the Beta was high maintenance compared to the dual sport bikes (i should have specified the category of bike) like the Yamaha wr250r and the Suzuki dr650. Valve clearance, oil changes, etc. I want to see Beta make a good street / dirt bike, i guess meant a dual sport type (not enduro), ex: Husqvarna 701 and the ktm 690 bikes.

josef ruru I just watched a video on SWM... they’re coming to America, and in style ! Introducing two new totally awesome bikes ( a 500 Enduro and a 600 Adventure) the 500 Enduro looks just like this Beta 480 RR and the 600 Adventure looks just the KTM 690 Enduro R . The 600 Adventure has identical characteristics like the KTM 690 Enduro R and both have Brembo brakes and hydraulic clutch , tunable mapping, and get this ... the 500 Enduro is priced at $7,700 and the 600 Adventure priced at $8,500 !! Whaaaaat ? 😦

There is one point I didn't hear. Beta motorcycles seem to always be 2/3 the size of a comparable KTM/Husky. Being a taller fella, I went the the Husqvarna route. Beta would have been my choice, but it just felt small. And that's coming from someone who also owns a newer fuel injected XT250. Really wanted one, but I just couldn't get over the smaller size making them ideal for riders shorter than my 6'3" stature.

Being lucky enough to ride one, I will agree I was disappointed. I consider it an updated DR650 (which I've owned). But then that's coming from someone who rides a Husky 350, so take it as an unfair comparison to a bike that is as nimble as a downhill mountain bike.

Sounds like you enjoyed the KTM 350 from past video a lot more than the Beta. I still enjoy my KLR but I need a bike that’s more dirt/way lighter to play on the tighter trails. Used KTMs are not crazy expensive but just have to find one that’s been well taken care of.

It always comes to the same conclusion, doesn't it? These newer bikes are immensly fun to ride and it would be a blast to own one. But for the money...hell you just can't beat an old japanese dual sport. For around 2.000 bucks you'll get a great bike and have so much money left to spent on fuel, mods, etc. :)

That Beta was totally hobbled by those tires. They are marginally better than a street tire. I've used those tires on a DRZsm for about a year and were fine for getting me off the pavement but weren't to be pushed. You got a lot right about the bike and the video was excellent as always, but there waa so much you missed out on because of the tires.
