www.crosstraini... IMPORTANT: there were main bearing failures on Beta two strokes for a few years in the 250 and 300 models, but the 125 appears to have avoided these completely! • Beta main bearing fail...
The Beta RR125 two stroke is ridiculously light and something tells me it won't quite have the same low down grunt. Let's take it for a ride. Below around 4000rpm the power is almost non existent on the RR125 Beta, but I'm surprised at the amount of mid range power. Once you really hit the high revs she becomes a pocket rocket. I haven't seen any dyno charts but I suspect it would be putting out around 40HP which really has the bike flying, even lugging my heavy carcass around. Shane Watts won the International Six Day Enduro riding a RR125 Beta so power is not an issue if you can keep the engine singing. And there are bigger bikes like the KTM 150XC and HusqvarnaTE150.
The big question is who would the Beta RR125 two stroke enduro dirt bike suit? Talented young riders could find this is a logical step up from the mini bikes. For adults? Unless you are a master of clutch control, it would be too easy to bog the engine in technical terrain or if you do lots of hill climbs. But it becomes a pile of fun in any terrain where you can keep it on the pipe and if you don't mind a pile of gear changes and clutch slipping out of tighter corners.
I've met a few older guys who love dirt riding 125s like the Beta because they used to race and love to ride their engine singing but don't want to kill themselves in the process. It's good to see Sherco has a 125 enduro as well and also the HusqvarnaTE150 and KTM 150XC.
The Beta RR125 two stroke enduro dirt bikes are absurdly light and easy to throw around, but what if you want some more grunt? Husky and KTM have their variants on the 150cc models which are rumoured to be around the same weight as the RR125. And of course plenty of guys have turned motocrossers into woods bikes, see our video about how to do this. Here's a little graph we whipped up to compare the benefits and drawbacks of small bore screamers like the Beta or even the HusqvarnaTE150 and KTM 150XC.
My personal thoughts on the RR125 Beta? I found it very strange jumping off a 300 two stroke and trying to adapt to this little pocket rocket. I timed my laps and although it was very easy to throw around, I thought my lap time would suck because I kept bogging the engine out of turns and rarely got into the upper revs properly to fully use the power. Well surprise surpise, my RR125 was 15 seconds quicker and no doubt I could shave more off that once I learned how to ride the little screamer properly. Would a RR125 Beta suit you? Well hopefully this vid will give you some things to think about it, but as always, the only way to be sure is plant your ass on a Beta RR125 two stroke dirt bike for a decent test ride. Or even the KTM 150XC and HusqvarnaTE150.

125's are generally a bit underpowered for tech riding unless your a flyweight or you only ride open terrain. I find my sons ktm xcw150 has alot more torque then a 125 and it can lug down well if needed where as a 125 can't do this, especially on hills. If a ktm is out of the question, then the beta 200 would be my pick. They are about 7kgs heavier then a ktm 150 though and the the ktm150 has a 10.5 ltr tank standard which gives excellent range. My sons mate has a sherco 125 which is a nice bike but my sons 150 eats it for torque.
Ktm 200 is still a quick young juniors weapon of choice so the beta should be great. Beta forks are the only ? and unknown for me. Xplor can be tuned well with a bit of work and tuners know them well. It's a real pity that beta can't put kyb on their bikes like gg. Gg will hopefully make a 200 with kyb soon as their old 200's were excellent bikes.
As you currently have one in the garage, like I did, it'll do the job. They're hard work to keep on song while threading through trees or negotiating obstacles. It's fine hustling one along on an MX track or a sprint Enduro, but when you're hammering through a three or four mile section of trees barely wider than the bike, and trying to pass people, it's hard work. Power wise they'll climb anything a 300 two stroke or 650 four stroke can, it's all down to technique. The only plus point is they're easy to physically drag out of a ditch, although you shouldn't need to if you're a having a good day.

UPDATE: MAIN BEARING FAILURES 2018, 2019 & 2020 BETA TWO STROKES Unfortunately there been main bearing failures in late model Beta 250 and 300 two strokes... Beta USA estimates about a 5% failure rate. But this has NOT affected the 125 and 200 Beta two strokes thankfully...... But nnfortunately there have been cases of multiple failures on the bigger two strokes - up to three in a row even when 'fixed' by Beta mechanics. Beta head office have never been clear about the exact cause. After being pressured, they said it was an 'assembly problem'. Months later they changed their story to it being a 'supplier problem' and they were given incorrect bearings. I've checked again and according to a distributor it's back to being 'an assembly problem' as they were heating the engine cases incorrectly, causing them to warp. This would explain why some riders are having two or even three bearings fail in a row. Get your engine case checked and replaced if needed!

That 125 geared down for that trail would be thrilling, slipping the clutch, managing the throttle to keep it on the pipe are a challenge on top of braking and shifting and reading terrain, at 58 years old, that is the only way to ride if possible. That is one way to keep the mind sharp and reflexes in top shape. Just do it!

It's good to see more of the 125s. I think alot of folks underestimate these machines becouse of the small displacement. I've been on a 2015 TE 125 for about 2 two seasons. It is a completely different riding style from a big bike. It will do just about anything I've asked of it and do it very well. But you've got to be on ponit 110% of the time. Which might be the turn off for some people. Clutch and gearing is a must. Picking the right line is also very important. However knowing how to keep your momentum going is by far most the critical part of it. There is alot of the more "motocross" skills that come into play riding these small bikes that alot of time gets lost riding the big bore bikes on trail. These things make power you just have to know how to tap it. But man, when you and the bike get firing on all cylinders... It's magic. And until you to experience it, it's hard to explain. Pros like Jarvis, Webb and Bolt must feel like that all the time, And on 300s. Wow...

The 125s are an awesome day out in the bush. It's a great challenge working the engine and clutch to the full and doing all the same things as the big bikes, at the same pace. You mentioned the Sherco 125 SER, I recently got to test ride these bikes and can report that the engine offers surprising low end power by way of the electronic power valve. Definitely worth a test. Sherco are also in development of a 150cc version, expect that to be available for the 2020 model year. 😊

They are a blast I love my yz125 converted for woods I’ve used for 3 years. If someone wants to be a little aggressive I think they’re a good starter bike light and cheap. The big negatives are 1. Top end rebuilds come up fast I do mine every 25 to 30 hours. 2. On the old 98 yz125 the seat height is actually crazy it’s 39in..... that’s an inch higher than the yz250. 3. The bottom end, not too much of an issue on level ground out side of exit acceleration, but it will teach you to pound the clutch. Also because the work input on the 125 it makes a great workout tool I’m not even kidding.

I ride a 2006 yz125 in the woods of North Alabama and I love it. I bought this particular model and year on purpose, because of its light weight, cheap price, good availability where I live, decent power for a 125 and the suspension quality. I had the suspension setup for woods riding, and installed: skid plate, hand guards, large radiators with guards, Tubliss in the rear, kickstand, lower gearing, exhaust system, and I had my engine blueprinted/polished/rebuilt. I have yet to try the flywheel weight on this bike, but have had good results from it on other bikes in the past. My only complaint if I had one would be the tight ratio of the gearbox. I would like to ride a bike like this, that is setup for this by the manufacturer.

When Fabio Fasola arrived in Israel about 20 years ago he saw everyone riding big bikes. Told them that they should all be riding 125s. Since then, 125 2 stroke was the most popular bike for the past 18 years or so. It was overtaken by the 250 2 stroke about a year ago.

I currently enjoy a motard version of a 50cc.... Yes 50cc 2 stroke. Hm-moto italian princess cre baja. The engine characteristics you describe are basically an understatement of what i experience. Apart from the surprising midrange power. My bikes midrange power is meh... I have recent video with it where you can hear the power curve. It's ridiculous. Recently had it dynoed though and it did 6.75 hp on the rear wheel. Not as spiky a power curve as expected, but still not enough mid range. I'm swapping for a bigger bore cylinder kit with more mid range. And throwing on some nice knubby rubbers :) should make for a very entertaining allaround funbike.

Worth noting Barry that the 150s dont have ADR in Aus, so if you want small bore + rego the Beta is the go. Also worth noting that for newcomers to the sport 125s make fantastic learning platforms because of the lack of low end. You are forced to learn how to slip the clutch and proper gear selection. My wife rides a cr125 and her technique now is better than the average because she had no choice - learn or push the bike up the hill. Im really keen to see the 200rr - hoping its going to be the best of both worlds - a 125 top end with some grunt.

I hope someone gets a new 200 enduro bike out on the market. I have an 09 200 xcw and really like the thing a lot. The KTM 200s don't have the rip you off the bike power of the 250s and 300s but lug great down low and if (when) you accidentally twist the throttle a little too hard, you don't end up on your ass while you watch your bike disappear off a cliff.

I was thinking of buying a (cheapish) CR125 or 250 for the mx-tracks,.. But I'd keep my trusty 300 aswel.

Two strokes last a pretty good while. A lot of people rebuild them so often more so because it’s easy and cheap or they were already doing work on the bike. I wouldn’t let it deter you.

ktm and husqvarna 150 way the same as the 125 cose thay 125 with a 150 cylinder 144cc-170 kits are available for almost all 125 but 125 2t are very bad in wet conditions and starting while you lose momentum in harde hill climbs allso pivot turns and climbing rocks with a short star is very hard

When people think Alaska they think of the main part of Alaska, not the bit that comes down 1/3 the way down BC. Smithers isn't exactly northern BC. More like central.

klasmvm I already have ridden a view and no doubt they just fly away in high revs And maybe it's just me but in offroading that no low end and shitload of power in top end aren't that great for me The not to much 4 stroke power there is great for me

Lots of top end power, rev's to the moon. Nothing at the bottom, literally. Was nice and light but you have to really be concious of staying on the pipe otherwise the bike feels like an under powered boggy 2T. I prefered the 250 xtrainer. A little heavier but the power band was way more user friendly and fun. Edit: I rode this bike at the demo day. It was my fifth bike of the day and I was running on about 4 hours of sleep. At that point I was running out of steam so I may have had a different opinion of it if I got to ride it when I wasn't dead tired.

motocross 125s were putting out around 36hp at the crank back in the 80s and there have been improvements since then so it's just a guesstimate. you'll probably lose 15 to 20% measuring at the rear wheel on a dyno.
