Beta64 - Super Mario World

If you asked someone what their favorite Mario game was, most of them would say Super Mario World. But can you blame them? The game is absolutely incredible! All the level, secrets, and memories with the game, makes it one of the best (if not the best) Mario game ever. It's perfect. ...well, almost.
Super Mario World had a lot of issues during development, and it eventually had to be rushed to completion. Because of this, there were some mistakes you may not be aware of in the game. And not only that, there are a TON of scrapped objects, sprites, levels, etc. just waiting to be discussed. And now, it's time to do just that.

The map from the 1989 build is quite easy to decipher, it is shaped like a super Mushroom, it even has eyes. Meaning a fortress could fit on the top still, and that other islands would most likely be shaped like other power-ups too. The fact that the final game still kept a Star world could be a hint to this.

At 5:38 in the video, we see the 1989 build’s overworld. However, thanks to the recent ‘Gigaleak’, we can now see that the overworld wasn’t just the mushroom. It would have branched into a smaller island that leads to big (probably main) island.

I have a theory about the hub world. If you look closely at the demo title card at 5:00 it looks like a mushroom. Then at about 6:00 you can see the layout of the levels. Of these levels, at least 3 of them are fortress levels. This leads me to believe that this is the mushroom kingdom, as it is shaped as a mushroom. So this might have ended up being the mushroom kingdom for every other game like this one. Reply if you have more to say about this. Thanks.

That unused sound effect was, indeed, modified slightly and then used in Yoshi's Island, when Yoshi hits a magenta-colored egg block (the kinds that expand into platforms that he can use to reach higher places).

You forgot to cover the unused ram value that when switch on, turns the cape instead of holding B to glide, to the SMB3 type where you mash B to glide. And the other unused bit of code that when you finish a level with the starman effect, after 8 loads it gives you the starman effect (probably an unused remnant of a helpful handicap for bad players) Also, it's probably intended before that you could get a starman in the item box, as it still has a correct looking sprite in the item box, along with a working stunned state object coming out of the box. The reason why those side activated cape blocks appear like p switches when hit is probably due to overwritten bounce sprite data. Half doors aren't special. Door enterability only applies to mario's size. For example 1 high doors only support small mario. However, 2 high doors can only support yoshi + small mario, or just big mario. With 3 high doors, you can also support yoshi + big doors. Actually I lied, they only rely on the height of the top block from the ground. Something very confusing and I'm not able to cover it in this comment. You also mentioned the wiggler 1up chain. This also applies to points recieved from sprites turning into coins when you beat the level. However, every other value is skipped. ex: 100 400 1000 4000 1up 3up 5coins etc. Interesting note on the layer 2 underground unused level, there's no level 3 background used as a replacement to the layer 2 backgrounds on normal levels now used for the sinking yellow part of the level. Maybe it hadn't been developed and this level was a test for layer 2 tangible behavior or maybe the developers didn't care to put it in. I also like how you incorrectly set the layer 2 properties for the early wendy level. :P More stuff not covered: - flying key (which hurts mario?) - unused yoshi sprites - conveyor ropes - seaweed - unused red switch palace in valley of bowser - unused green castle blocks level with pipe - translucent level effect - morton's plains - debug features left in the game - early chocolate island 2 screenshot This game has a whole lot of unused stuff in the RAM and the ROM

The side-activated blocks actually are reminiscent of Mario 3, as they appear in many places, such as World 1-3 and 2-1. Of course, due to the tileset changes, but not codes, they load the wrong value, ending up with the usage of the P-Switch sprite.

For those who don't know, I recommend downloading FuSuYa's Lunar Magic save over a copy of super mario world on your pc. It's basically super mario maker before super mario maker was a thing and it can do way more than super mario maker. Anyway, if you fool around with editing in Lunar Magic, you can learn a ton about how the game was made and find all those unused things he was talking about in this video. P.S.: the conveyor belt that is unused is actually used in super mario but as just a basic rope that you stand on. I forget the name of the stage but it's the one at night with a bunch of bouncing and parakoopas and those countdown platforms.
