When she acted when she returned to her room told the story. Later, in Moscow, Townes mentioned that the Russian consulate also helped get a visa. He added that maybe they thought he might distract her. Beth's following comment, along with air subsequent dialogue, made his sexuality very clear. I hope that clears things up.

Townes is gay. Not bi. Gay. He made it clear to her, in the final episode, that he was confused. I inferred that to mean he was confused that she hadn't realized he was gay and misconstrued his interest. Yes, he was drawn to her. As he said, she really is something, and remarkable people tend to inspire fascination. But fascination isn't the same as desiring someone as a lover. He told her point blank that, "What [he] really wanted was for [them] to be friends," and she'd broken his heart when she rejected that friendship because she'd believed he had been offering more and had come to realize that it had never been on the table. Yes, he had told Beth that she was beautiful. Beth IS beautiful. He had touched her hair and face, but this isn't automatically an indication that someone wants to jump someone else's bones. When Roger entered the room, Townes didn't jump back as though he'd been caught doing something illicit. He spoke to Beth and behaved with Beth very similar to the way the model Cleo did. On his end, there wasn't sexual tension between them, just true appreciation of her beauty and intelligence. Beth's immaturity and lack of sexual experience had caused her to believe otherwise, until the signs were glaringly obvious. Townes had likely thought Beth had rejected him, as a friend, primarily because she realized he was gay, which was a big no-no in the 1960s. This would have broken his heart. The way she greeted him, in Russia, with overwhelming joy, likely caused him to finally understand that this hadn't been the case. In the end, Beth needed Townes as a friend. A good friend who would take care of her without burdening her with his desires. She couldn't wrap Townes around her little finger, as she did Beltik, and Townes wouldn't grow resentful that she couldn't give him the type of romantic responses that Benny craved. She had enough on her plate already and having Townes and Jolene bracketing her, as true friends with no ulterior motives, should inevitably prove to be very healing for her.
