I'm a surfer too and I have a feeling I know why Bethany had to get back in the water right away. It's something you just don't want to give up. But in addition to her brave heart, she is also just a really, really talented surfer! It took her only THREE waves to figure out how to paddle into a wave and get up on the board and keep her balance with only ONE arm! I admire her physical ability and mental strength. :)

She was able to thrive through probably the biggest obstacle in her life and made it to her dream of a professional surfer. She had her times where she was frustrated, but she was able to fight through the brick wall and meet the happy ending of her hopes and dreams. Watched the film 'Soul surfer' today with a class at school. All the kids and myself were truly touched by your accident and journey. I hope my kids will take away something from your journey other than just watching a good film. There were a few red eyes at the end! Love your faith Bethany, the way you found God was there with you in your journey is inspiring, and your journey to visit the people touched by the tsunami puts all things into perspective (at least in the moment!). What can you say, humans are voluntarily entering the sharks space not the other way around. The shark isn't malicious, he is simply surviving the only way he can by eating anything that comes into his path. If there ever comes a day sharks come charging up main street biting you in the ass as you do some grocery shopping then we can complain. Until then if you step into the water and are attacked by a shark then it's your fault not his and it's outrageous that anyone should suggest killing sharks for being sharks. The sea IS their grocery store.

Actually, Sharks don't just go an eat whatever comes their way. They usually attack surfers thinking that they are seals which is their main source of food along the coast of Florida and some other tropical places. If you look at a surfer from underwater you would see how a shark would mistake them for a seal, especially when they are laying on their board. And, you generally don't see sharks so close to the coast of a beach, which is why there's usually a limit to how far you can go, but yes, the ocean is the sea creatures territory, which is why we generally have standards.
