Now that I'm over 50, I'd never wear midriff tops or micro mini skirts. I wore these until around age 55. Truthfully, some in their teens, 20s, 30s, etc. shouldn't wear those things, either.

Age is just a number, there is no reason to look like your dressed in curtain fabric because you are over 50. Jeans and leggings look as good on us as they do on youngsters, and just above the knee skirts look way smarter and sassier than ankle length.

Totally agree with you on this, Beth !! I'm 69 and I wear what pleases me and makes me feel good. As I grew older, I changed to Bermuda shorts, prefer a bathing suit to a bikini, and like my skirts about kneelenght or longer. Otherwise, if something suits me and makes me feel good, I'll wear it. My hair is still full and healthy. I stopped coloring just before covid and it's a light silver by now. I wear it about shoulderlenght. Live is a lot better without someone elses fashion rules.

I cut off my capris and turned them into Bermuda’s. Then I rolled them up and found I can more than pull off a a 5” or 7” hem. Sleeveless just looks awful and ages me, but my cleavage isn’t too bad. I have always love beautiful colors and can’t ever give up color(but I am an artist)! You’ve unleashed this youthful 72 year old.

I have long hair which I highlight (blending my gray/white hair), I’m tall and still have good legs so skirts above the knee look good on me as do shorts. I’ve put the 5 inch shorts in the beach only pile, but wear my 7 inch and bermudas all summer, spring and early fall. I happily wear sleeveless tops even though my arms aren’t perfect-they are “good”. Thanks for the tips and encouragement!

I'm 76, same here, because neither my upper arms nor my knees are still to be displayed. And my none existing waist isn't on display, too, but I get a lot of compliments about my style, clothes and appearance. I use to show my best parts and hide the others. 😉😁

I must say that a lot of those “rules” are now CHOICES when you are in your 80s! I was once a very big fan of halter tops, very high heels and short dresses. However, my dear Beth, you are still young and my guess is that when your body starts to show sagging arms with easy bruising and legs with varicose veins that your preference might be to CHOOSE to implement some of those rules just because they look better! That being said, there are still lots of wonderful clothes out there!

I live in a college town. There is zero style with the under 30 set. Yoga pants, Daisy Dukes, sweatshirts and pajamas in public are all I see. I loved the way my mother and her friends dressed in the 50s…they were elegant and glamorous. I’m 71 now and where what I want with lots of color.

I cheerfully ignore all fashion rules, I always have. But, I do think there is such as thing as age-appropriateness, but we are the only ones who can decide this, based on what feels and looks right to us. I still wear above-the-knee skirts at 63, for example, my legs are better than most teenager’s, so why shouldn’t I? On the other hand, I’ve never shown any cleavage at any age, that’s just what feels comfortable for me. As our bodies mature, we decide for ourselves what feels right. I don’t stress about my slightly rounded tummy, so I tuck in all my tops, or wear waist-length ones, but many women my age want to cover theirs with long tops. I am self-conscious about my upper arms, mostly because of my Mom repeatedly insisting that any woman over 40 should never show them. But, when it’s over 80F, I don’t have a choice, anything else is miserably hot, so the world gets to see the wrinkles caused by collagen loss. Unlike many other woman, I didn’t medically qualify for hormone replacement drugs, and it shows. Men don’t “dress for” or apologize for aging, why should we? There is still such a widespread feeling that we should look as enticing to men as we did at 16, to hell with that!

I agree 100% with your comments. Wear what "you" feel confident and comfortable in and don't judge other women's choices. Age appropriateness is a personal thing. I wear deep v-neck tops and am rather busty but never feel uncomfortable in them. On the other hand I wouldn't feel comfortable in short shorts so I don't buy them.

Beth, I have never heard of fashion rules for the over 50 set. I have to tell you that my mother was your mother's generation, hats, gloves, etc. But she broke free in the Summer as we all do in New England. We have two months to live it up in our hot and humid summers, with miles and miles of seacoast, pools, lakes, waterfalls and ponds. I dare anyone to tell a woman in Massachusetts what she can and cannot wear... or do. Get ready to duck. In Summer you have to wear shorts and sleeveless tops or die from the humidity. Many older homes in New England, like the one I grew up in, don't even have AC. So, you have to wear weather appropriate outfits. Even my own mother use to wear sleeveless in the summer no matter how old she got, and she loved getting "dolled up". She loved clothes and fashion just like I do, and she was quite the old fashion proper women, never swore or said an unkind word about anyone. However, when my parents went to Florida and Cuba on their honeymoon and my mother couldn't wear her beautiful suits in Florida in the month of April, she was appalled at the heat/humidity at that time of year. Never went down to Florida ever again. LOL I do not know who is saying this about women over 50. I have never hurt such poppycock. Thanks Beth, good talk. :-)

I think that at the core of “age appropriate” fashion rules is the belief that older women should fade into the background and become invisible. Our culture is so youth oriented that older women are sometimes pushed to the background. I think we should push back with our fashion choices, with our voices and everything we’ve got. We still have so much to offer to the world.

I think one thing that affects how "skin baring" clothing looks on women over 35 or so is the fabric. Polyester/rayon and fabrics that fast fashion companies use seem to age us? The one shoulder blouse you're wearing here looks great!
