I am so glad I learned to sew years ago. I turned my capris into shorts, my tunics into cute tops and can alter clothes that are ill fitting. Not everything can be repurposed or altered. But I really ended up with some cute shorts outfits!

I agree about not hanging on to trendy and dated pieces - but I have kept select pieces that suit me and are in tip top condition. I also agree that classic silhouettes change over time - but I won't let go of classics that suit my figure better than a more modern take on it, e.g., blazers - the slightly relaxed, longer style that is "in" right now really doesn't suit my petite frame and short torso. Another key consideration is the ever decreasing quality of clothing. I bitterly regret getting rid of a number of pieces that are no longer available in the same quality at a reasonable price-point - remember when clothes that really should be lined, actually were lined?

I agree with you. The few pieces that I regret having parted with were made of beautiful fabrics that one rarely sees today, Such as lined wool trousers, lined silk jackets, etc.
@sparklie962

@@maryokeefe5351 So, so true. My mother told me lined pieces would hang better and last longer and she wasn't wrong. It's bad enough that nothing's lined, but I'm also resenting how little is actually made of natural fabrics anymore. I'm just not willing to compromise on quality, fabric and finishing. Consequently almost everything I've bought in 2023 has been from vintage/consignment stores and anywhere from 2 to 10 yo. Oh well, better for the environment and my budget!

Most of my wardrobe is 'timeless classics'. Mostly natural fiber. Some items I own for quite a few years. Nobody noticed. I do not live in the most fashionable part of the country. More like a Red Neck area where people drive pick-up trucks. Tonight we went to a nice Steak House for dinner and at least half the people were dressed in jeans, t-shirts and hoodies. I knew that the friends who joined us would be very casual too. I wore light taupe wide leg linen/cotton pants, a tank top with a matching linen/cotton cardigan by Nic&Zoe, sandals, gold earrings and a set of bracelets. I fit in, but was still dressier then most others.

I am short, busty, and long-waisted. When I wear high-waisted skirts dresses and pants, I look great. Everything is proportional. The current "oversize boyfriend's blazer" look is simply hideous on me! I gain 50 pounds, lose 20% of my visual height, and feel awful. Dumpy. Fat. So, I'm afraid there are lots of current trends that I will NEVER adopt. My shorter cropped and closely fitted blazers will simply have to do, I refuse to make myself look bad in the name of chasing a trend!

@lindacgrace. Well said!!! 👏👏👏 You’re right, I actually saw in another video, a long time ago, that petite women should wear well fitted blazers, not long. Additionally, this video is too long; presenter kept repeating the same thing over and over again. Could have been done in 5-10 minutes. And to update your wardrobe every six months is good for people who have the means to do it.

I edit my wardrobe constantly, getting rid of anything outdated, looks cheap or that doesn’t fit. Weight loss over the last five or so years resulted in a wardrobe of too-big clothes, but it’s hard to let go of clothes I still love. I’ve downsized with alterations what I could, mostly skirts because of their simple designs, but there is a limit on how much one can do on too-big items.

My two hardest items to give away when I lost 50 pounds were my lack leather jacket, and my London Fog raincoat. I bought a new London Fog on Amazon, and bought a bunch of very slightly used leather jackets on Poshmark for less than $100. I posted some clothes on BuyNothing, and took about 3 boxes to a woman’s shelter and job training place. One of the women and I talked outside by my car, and women kept coming out to show what they’d found. It was fun, and I didn’t mind giving away even the nicest things because I could see how much people enjoyed them. The Buy Nothing gal asked if I minded if she passed along things that didn’t fit or weren’t her style. She gave some to a gal who was just finishing college and used them for job interviews.

I find an easy way to sort my closet is to turn all the hangers around at the beginning of a season. When returning items from the laundry, I hang the garment the “right way”. At the end of the season I take a serious look at the items hung backward - I clearly did not wear these items in the previous season. Those items deserve evaluation.

I am generally with you on the points that you make about paying attention and keeping your look contemporary (and yeah! Goodbye to skinny jeans!) Trends don't matter to me. My clothes have always been extremely simple...most of my life has been lived in jeans and tops. My size hasn't changed much in the past half-century - I'm a little thinner now than in my 30s, like size 8 as opposed to size 10 jeans. Always straight leg or wide leg. I'm just turning 76. When I was young, I sewed beautiful dresses etc. - by hand - but for the past few decades, i dont even have a skirt. Black dress slacks when needed. I toss anything that's become worn. The oldest thing in my Closet is a silky tissue-thin ivory Suit Blouse with a draped neckline. I bought it in the mid-80s. It's like a scarf, in terms of space requirements, so i keep it just in case - still looks great on me. None of those oversized Blazers for me! Short waisted and slim - I use something more fitted and softer. No jewelry ever. Etc. Scarves only. No Prints except occasionally on a Scarf. Soft solid colors or neutrals for me.

Simple accessories such as socks, scarves, or costume jewelry are generally okay, but I’ve learned from experience that for clothing items it’s better to try them on in a bricks and mortar store. For example, one brand’s size 10 is another brand’s size 8 or 12.

Hi Beth what is your opinion of long cardigans? I have two good quality ones but never feel comfortable wearing them. Keep or throw? I have only had them three Winters .

It was easier to break up with a boyfriend than beloved outdated outfits! Alas, it became much easier than hanging on to looks that were aging my look. I have mentioned many times, I still teach high school so remaining fresh and modern has a positive effect on the respect I receive from my students. I feel I'm setting a good example every single day of "no matter how you feel, you'll look good if you get up, get dressed up and show up!"

I ditched all of my kimonos when I changed over to my winter wardrobe this fall. They now seem super dated to me. To the donation pile they went!

Hi Beth. I need your input. I found several jackets from some years ago which I used to wear to work. Your blazer suggestions are great, but I can't decide whether my jackets are just jackets or whether they could be considered blazers. What is the difference? My jackets are not oversized, but they are not tight-fitting either. I wore them all over pants, and they are all hip length.

Good question! Blazers and jackets are similar but in the case of a suit jacket that is designed to go with a suit with matching pants or skirt. The blazer is still a tailored jacket conventionally made in a solid color. But times have changed and blazers are made from all sorts of fabric and we typically don't wear suits these days.

Many thanx, Beth. I have now isolated the jackets that were single purchases, and kept one linen jacket that at one point had a matching pants. Once again, you have enabled/facilitated me to expand my wardrobe without spending a cent! Removing some thick shoulder pads has also brought the items up to date. Your good taste, sartorial wisdom and practical common sense are priceless, and have uplifted me in more ways that you can ever guess.

O.K. I guess I need to finally say so long to a linen suit that I've been holding on to. It has to be about 15 years old. This was a great video, Beth. It would be so much fun to see you go into your closet and show us how you would declutter your dated clothes. I have two beautiful mother of the bride dresses that I purchased at Saks Fifth Ave. These long gowns were last worn in 2013 and 2019 respectively. What would you suggest I do with them? Thanks for your updated content.

Perhaps you could remake them so they are appropriate for a young woman for a prom. Many young women have a difficult time affording a pretty dress. Then contact a charity organization in early spring to see if they know of someone who might want one.

If you think you would wear them, you could have them cut to knee length, and have a matching stole with the leftover fabrics.

Women our age have had the privilege to wear well made and well cut, flattering items. I cannot see how buying the almost identical item in lesser quality at much higher price helps me nor the environment. Pear shaped figures are accentuated out of proportion by buttons on the tummy, thigh enhancing mom-jeans, cropped tops and jackets that end exacly at the most unflattering level and crew necks. So why?

I would never have worn your 2015 clothes then or now. A personal style that you moved on from to your current personal style which is simpler. I wear natural fabrics, fitted for me. tonal, deep and rich. Never floppy, never synthetics, never patterns.

On another video, one comment was by a hoarder (her words) who still had clothes from the ‘80s & 90s & she was so happy for the bigger shoulder trend so she could wear these again!!!!! Think she’ll look like she’s in style now?!?!?!?

It would depend on the collar, the sleeve ease, and the way those shoulders fit. It might work.
