In order to master slow motorcycle riding and truly have control of your motorcycle, you must have not only a basic understanding of what the “friction zone” is, but how and when to implement it. You only need to concentrate on 3 things; throttle control, clutch and rear brake. Using all 3 of these things simultaneously will result in successful slow riding and a higher confidence in your ability to keep your motorcycle on its wheels and not laying on the engine guards.
Your head and eyes are important as well. You must turn your head and eyes and look where you want to go.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

I'm a 64 year old male who has been on a 35 year break from riding. Back in my youth there was nothing to really to learn from. It was like swimming. You just jumped in and quickly learned. Well that's how I learned to ride as well. Rode quite a bit in my early twenties. Anyway I have been having the ache to ride again for sometime. Being retired it seemed like it was time, If I was ever going to again. I am healthy, fit and capable. So why not. I recently purchased a 2013 FLSTC. I love it. Two things came to mind. One is I know idea of what I was doing. Two, I need some training. So I have religiously and repeatedly watch yours and ride like a pro videos. I try to practice something almost everyday. Which in reality is most likely four times a week. I have a class scheduled for the first part of November. Your teaching style and technics absolutely rock. It's you and people like you that make us better and enjoy it more? Thanks Robert

Rob, I'm in my second year of a bad double heart attack and surgery and never even considered selling my Goldwing. Keep at it, repeating things over and over makes perfection! I just came from a 2-hour practice at the train parking lot which went beautiful and even went lock to lock in a full turn without the "urge" to go straight. I do 1-hour Saturday and Sunday since surgery.

Hi Robert, I'm a novice motorcycle rider, and actually just took the motorcycle safety course for the state of Virginia to obtain my license. That course is basically designed, to give you enough information and writing experience to obtain your license. Honestly I want to thank you for your channel. I've learned more about the basic fundamentals of riding, especially slow riding, and watching four of your videos then I did in the entire 3-day motorcycle safety course. Have a great day.

Great info Robert. I’ve been riding for over 50 years and felt I was pretty good at slow speed until I watched this video. However, I just experienced a “lightning bolt” moment when you identified the pre-u-turn dip. Thinking back on the many u-turns I’ve done in my life, I now see why many felt perfect, while some I struggled with. That extra opposing direction dip was unconsciously present evry time a u-turn felt smooth as butter. Thanks for sparking that epiphany for me. I’m off to practice now to solidify that concept in my muscle memory!👍

Hey Robert, just wanted to thank you for making these videos. I've been using them in recent weeks to get used to a bike that is new to me. I used to ride for a few years on a Yamaha R6 and then had a 3 or 4 year gap that I didn't ride. Last month I inherited an Indian Roadmaster that was my stepfathers after he passed last year. It's a drastically different bike than I've ever had and I was entirely overwhelmed by it at first. In the last couple weeks your videos have helped me tremendously! Really, I'm truly thankful to you.

I'm really glad your sharing your experience with others. I got something to say about a very stupid thing that I did earlier in my married life. When I was about 35 years old I decided I wanted to buy a motorcycle. I always wanted a motorcycle ever since I was about 8 years old. In my neighborhood several friends of mine had them and it just made me so envious but my dad wouldn't have it because he sold memorials and he told me he'd never let me have one because he sold to many tomb stones to families that had a son or father killed on a motorcycle and he didn't want to have to get one for me. So I've got no experience on a street bike. Me and my wife went out looking to buy a motorcycle and I used the excuse that it would give us a chance to go out and do this together. So I bought a Honda VTX-1800 witch is really heavy. One day my wife and I went out riding and went to one of my friends house and I tried to make a U-turn on a narrow back street going very slow and walking my feet on the road and my foot got caught by the muffler and we fell over. Luckily we didn't get hurt but not long after that I put it up for sale ! It wasn't worth the life of my wife, kids, myself or anybody else's life because I was trying to live the life I wished I'd had with motorcycles but I didn't know what I was doing ! I was the guy that couldn't rollerskate, skateboard or jump rope looking like a funky chicken having convulsions ! People, don't be like me and buy a motorcycle that's way to big and heavy and you don't have any experience ! Get training and experience before you risk any body's life !

Hi Robert I am 65 and have not been on a bike in 40 years. I still have my MC license. Last bike I owned was a 1972 Sportster 1000 CC kick start drum brakes. I saw a 2014 Sportster 72 a retro of the 1972 but much more refined at the Harley Dealer and I bought it. They delivered it to my garage. I bought the PP gear I needed. So far I have not had the bike out. I sit on it and start it up and work all the controls. I have been studying the owners manual and I ordered the Service Manual. I am a retired GM Mechanic. I have watched Jerrys KZbin Videos and just ordered his DVD. My Buddy turned me on to your channel. I am watching your first video for the 10th time. You are a excellent instructor. I had rode for about 6 years in Chicago before I stopped when we had our first Child. My Wife loved to ride with me. About 4 years ago my Wife asked me if I was going to get another bike so we could go ridding. I gave it some thought and wondered how long it would take me to get to were I would be confident to put her on the back. I didn't pursue it. I lost my Wife last August to the Covid-19. I have this feeling she is nudging me to go ridding so she can go with me. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Harold chucknorbid@gmail.com

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Hi Robert I have a KZbin Channel Harold Demes I started it in 2010 for just the reason you started yours. My channel is about electroplating and carburetor restoration. This has been my side business for many years. It bought my Harley. I have learned so much from KZbin that I am glade I can pay back. I am thinking on doing a video on getting back to riding after 40 years at age 65. It might inspire others. If I do I will be giving you a lot of plugs. The years I rode I didn't really know how to ride and I did some crazy crap on motorcycles. I am going to follow you instructions. I am a believer that if you can't control the bike at slow speeds stay off the main roads. I will keep you updated. Thanks Harold

I have been watching videos on tight turns for years, subscribe to RLAP and attended a couple of classes, doing lousy at them. This is the best video I have watched yet, enough that this is my first KZbin comment. I loved the afterthought to release the clutch to initiate the lean and identified so much with the way you describe your training before you were hit by lightning. I hope that one day I will find the courage to accept the feeling of dropping my Goldwing and finally do a turn like I know I should. I need practice on many things, but what I really need is that lightning strike.

Funerals and leading parades were the two biggest clutch and forearm killers :) You can always tell a LE trained motorcycle rider because they are in total control of their bike at all times whether its with a foot down at an intersection , riding in pairs, or over taking a violator. You got over dragging a foot real quick on the old KZ1000's. That crash bar design was an ankle eater. Love your style and generosity.

Sir, I read your comment and agree that the MSF course is a bare minimum. I’m here to learn Robert’s slow speed turning techniques as I just bought my first Harley and my background is in supersport and stock1000 road racing. I think one of the major sins of the MFS course is not covering countersteering in depth. Understand what makes a motorcycle turn (at higher speeds) once you are traveling at a higher than parking speed (once the motorcycle achieves a gyroscopic stability speed) will save your life. There’s a book called Twist of the Wrist. And here’s a link to the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/enyccqJ3dt5qq68 It’s invaluable information just as Robert’s information is invaluable regarding slow speed maneuvering. Don’t think that this only applies to sport bike riding or racing….it’s applicable to every type of motorcycle and riding type at above parking lot speed. Good luck and enjoy riding.

Hey Robert.... So glad I found you man. Just turned 50 this year. And having been afraid to motorcycles all my life. I finally said fuck it, what's the point of living if I'm living in fear. And so I bought my first motorcycle a Yamaha R3 this year. I've been shit scared of getting on her as of dropped the bike a couple of times now. I was really hoping to keep her pristine but I ended up dropping her a couple of times ouch!!! :-( my heart still aches, but I guess it's a learning curve. Problem was always me not stopping smoothly. When I found you videos, what you teach actually put all the pieces' together for me. I'm actually not so afraid of her anymore and looking to get back on her to practice again..... Kudo's to what you do man. keep up the good work! and keep you posted on my progress.

Hey man thanks for sharing your videos on Low speed turning. It just totally changed the way I drive a motorcycle now. I’ve been a truck driver all my life and worked around these trucks and everything for all my life I was always told since I began driving my first pick up with a three in a tree to never ever ever ride the clutch. It will where out the clutch and release bearing. Now I find out thanks to all your great videos that I do in fact need to ride the clutch on my motorcycle. Now that’s some damn good information right there. That’s something everyone should know. I really appreciate all you do and all you’ve done through your years as a police officer. Keep up the good work Mr. you have totally changed my outlook on bikes. I’ve been riding for aboat 12 years and I can finally do what I’ve always wanted to do with my motorcycle ! This was super helpful and informative. I never rode a motorcycle in my life or any kind of motorized bike until my first safety course about a month and a half ago. I was already picking up on some things and doing things you mentioned on here and I just kept self reflecting. Balancing was easy but as my instructors said and you alike constant throttle and the friction zone will stabilize you so the weight of the bike will not matter as long as you ease in and out the clutch while preloaded. I probably shouldn't have but I bought a indian springfield but this helps my confidence even more. I've also been sitting on it in the garage and rocking it and getting used to the weight which eases my nerves. This video helps me out even more. Takeaway is friction zone, friction zone, friction zone. As long as you manage the clutch you'll be fine with slow maneuvers. Thank you for this video.

Damn LT! This vid just popped up and shows as 9 months old.. You’ve only been making these vids for 9 months? Man.. feels like I’ve been watching these for longer than that. I really like what you said about every ride being an opportunity to practice. That’s how I do it. Every time I stop I try to stop PROPERLY. Every so often I don’t get it perfect but I’d rather look like an idiot having to put my right foot down if I lost some balance than throw out some landing gear on each stop Every time I’m at a gas station it’s an opportunity for a u turn.

I started riding about a year ago on a small Rebel 300 and just bought a Road King for longer rides. I quickly realized that I have developed a number of bad habits from the Rebel because it is so light that I could get away with. I've been riding for so many years, have taken so many slow speed courses over the years, but you have shown me that it's not the speed your on but how to regulate your speed with clutch and rear brake. I just wished that so many thinking they know how to ride but cannot make a u-turn and have problems slow speed riding.

Woah. I surely need this. I've seen Mr. Paladino's videos too. I'm back, on a 2014 Harley Davidson Road King after 40 years with no bike. I've had 3, but nothing this heavy and powerful. So... Thank You for this. I need this.

Robert, Just passed my 2 day motorcycle class to get my Ohio permanent motorcycle lisense! 1 Thursday evening in classrom, but Saturday for 6 hours and today for 6 hours on the bike doing all obstacles. You know with all these hours of training this weekend I learned alot but I still had one ACE up my sleeve- Guess what that was? It was YOU and your videos Robert. Many hours watching them this summer and parking lot training. This weekend through the course- I always PRELOADED and kept it LOADED! I SMOKED the 5 obstacle final test today even in the rain 😊 So pumped! You are are the man! Thank you for all that you do brother!
