Bethel Lutheran / Miller Cemetery
Tucked between U.S. 12 and U.S.20 not far east of Lake Street is one of Miller's little secrets, one of the oldest cemeteries in Lake County. Buried there is not only the 3-year old son of Miller's namesake, but also a few of Miller's early prominent residents like Drusilla Carr and William Westergren. It is also the final resting place of many heretofore unnamed victims of explosions at the Aetna Powder Plant buried in unmarked graves.

Hey y’all, great job introducing us to some of the dunes’ earliest and most notable settlers! W.G. Cook joined the Union Army at age 16, and fought in some of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. He was badly wounded at the Battle of Missionary Ridge, and medically discharged. Back home, he was appointed the first Postmaster of Miller in 1879. Sigurd Lindstrom grew up on Old Hobart Road, not far from the cemetery. He enlisted in the Army in 1941, and was assigned to the First Armored Division. Sigurd likely saw tank combat through North Africa and into Italy. He returned home to work as a truck mechanic at the historic Gary Post Office, and longtime caretaker of Miller Cemetery. John S. Miller was the first person recorded buried in the cemetery, in 1851. The Town of Miller was named after John’s father who operated an inn near the railroad tracks. John’s headstone disappeared at some point, and was replaced with a donated stone in 2006. The plaque missing from the stone in front of the big white cross used to say “To the Glory of God and In Memory of our Founders. This cross is erected on the 90th Anniversary of our organization on June 26, 1874 by the grateful congregation of Bethel Lutheran Church” Sorry I’m tardy to the party! Steel, to me , people are a treasure, and they all should be respected, remembered and honored. Not just after they die,. Like it says in the Bible love God, love people. The many armed Force soldiers,they gave everything for theirs as well as our country's freedom. I thank each and every one of them for what they did

My dad was from Miller Indiana...He's buried now in Porter with my mom....nice work guys I grew up in Hobart and alot of relatives worked in the steel mills. I am an old lady now been in Texas since 76

I ride past there everyday and I want to go check it out myself. I work at Ridgelawn cemetery out here in Gary. There are Graves at my job way older than those like there. Go to 19th and Grant Street right across from the little strip mall there's a old historic cemetery where you will see Gray's from the late 1800s

Miller was settled by Swedes. The came to fish Lake Michigan and harvest the cranberries that grew in the bogs. The Carr family had a fish market by Lake Street beach, they sold fresh fish. The city of Gary made them give up the property and the Carr's had a lawsuit against Gary. But the family lost the lawsuit.

No it’s not boy.head stone are sand stone ,they didn’t hold up and some people still have family around .the Carr will known family in Miller.

You’re right, Ms. DeSoto! In fact, matriarch Drusilla Carr was “Diana of the Dunes,” the first female homesteader on the dunes and the last to fight off the eminent domain claims of the City of Gary and U.S. Steel. She was successful in her fight to keep her mile-long stretch of beach at the top of Lake Street through her death in 1930, and is still considered one of the Region’s first great environmentalists - wishing to preserve both her squatters rights and the unpolluted lake shore. I always enjoy hearing your additions to your boys’ stories, and laughed about “you need long pants on son.” I can almost hear you telling me to go to bed, it’s a work night… :)
