I don’t whether to be depressed or nostalgic when listening to this... but after learning about Scott’s love life, this number just hits all the right feels. It’s like he poured all his feelings on to the keys that could explain everything without saying a single word. History and music (Ragtime) is beautiful

"Bethena, A Concert Waltz" (copyright registered March 6, 1905) is a composition by Scott Joplin. It was the first Joplin work since his wife Freddie's death on September 10, 1904 of pneumonia, ten weeks after their wedding. At the time the composer had significant financial problems; the work did not sell successfully at the time of publication and was soon neglected and forgotten. It was rediscovered as a result of the Joplin revival in the 1970's and has received acclaim from Joplin's biographers and other critics. The piece combines two different styles of music, the classical waltz and the rag, and has been seen as demonstrating Joplin's excellence as a classical composer. The work has been described as "an enchantingly beautiful piece that is among the greatest of Ragtime Waltzes", a "masterpiece", and "Joplin's finest waltz" -From Wikipedia..........

In my opinion, I think Beethoven's Sonata is more overtly tragic because it includes more dissonance (esp. in the beginning). I think Bethena is more of a reflection of nostalgic romance that is no longer. Both songs without a doubt are about love and are brilliantly composed pieces.

This reminds me my Great-Grandma Elvira Jiménez (1909 - 2010), she was a very active, nice and catholic person until her death, she worked since 1923 until 2005 as able as she was for it, she told her family a lot of things about the XX century's Mexico: how she lived the Mexican Revolution, how she was the family De La Parra's maid during the 1920s, how she lived in El Salvador on the 1930s, how she worked her bussness since the 1930s until the 2000s, how different Mexico City was before than currently, how she experienced Europe when she traveled there, among so much other stories. I miss her, I wish she could be still alive with me, with my sister, with my father, with my uncle, with my family. She could tell a lot of her life and how she lived the XX century's world, it was a miracle when she turned 100 years old. I love her and I'll keep her in my memory until my own death.

I learned a dozen of Joplin's song, yet I play them robotically, like a music box. I'd love to understand the inner logic of these tunes... Joplin managed god knows why to reconnect with the basics of the western classical music tradition. His music is melodious structured equally to that of Schubert and Mozart, long before him, at a time where all composers in France (Satie, Debussy) and elsewhere were going mad and messing up the structure everywhere.

I know that you probably aren't going to see this, but one thing that helps for me is to, before you play the song, take a couple seconds to feel whatever emotion you want to feel. For example, before playing this song, try to feel really sad before you play it and that will help. Don't just sit down and play it, take a couple seconds before to put yourself in the right mindset.
