The part that stood out to me was when the dev said "Maybe it's a game of expectations." But I think expectations have risen because other devs have delivered so much more at that price point and it's OK to have higher expecations in terms of quality, quantity, and substance of content. As Juicehead pointed out, peak player numbers of shattered space on steam is far less (an eight IIRC) than the number of steam players that bought the special edition that included the DLC. Like, let that sink in, a majority of people who were hype enough to buy the $100 early unlock edition didn't even bother to reinstall the game for the DLC they'd already paid for.

Added NPCs after Backlash, added several Free story expansions, updated map to show grown in the wasteland, added whole new map area that's decently big, many quality of life improvements, new mobs and added 3 new world bosses with a Destiny like official Raid coming next update in December, many new weapons and armor, many new events, still making free Season passes. I know a lot of people don't like the game still but it's awesome compared to Pre- Wastelanders update.

When most of your customers are voicing the same complaints your job as a company is to address those issues. If you keep making those same mistakes your customers will go elsewhere, Ubisoft is facing that right now. Loyalty and goodwill only go so far and Bethesda as a company has failed to deliver not only with Starfield but also Fallout 76's launch or Wolfenstein Youngblood. The gamers who played those or felt burnt by buying those games likely aren't buying your games or at least not at full price anymore. You're repeating the same formula with Starfield's DLC that made the core game a drag and you thought gamers would be okay with that? What are you thinking, just saying "we worked so hard' doesn't matter to the people giving you money.

What Bethesda just can’t understand is that it’s no longer 2011. The STANDARDS for an Open World RPG are higher. In 2011, Bethesda set the bar with Skyrim. That is undeniable. But since then? The bar has been raised. The standard isn’t Skyrim anymore. The Standard at this point is Cyberpunk 2077 and even Red Dead Redemption 2. If your open world RPG game can’t meet that standard, you’re going to lose the battle of comparisons. No one wants to see an NPC talk straight into the screen with nothing else going on because of Cyberpunk’s first person cutscenes proving that they could do more. No one wants a janky and buggy mess of a game because “it adds that bethesda charm”. You just can’t rely on “oh well the modders will add/fix it later” The genre that Bethesda had monopolized grew past it and they’re now playing catch up.

Half the price of the original game and they delivered a mediocre side quest checklist. Meanwhile CP2077:PL delivered 50 hours of story content, several new endings and future interactable content, new mission types, new lore, perfectly curated story content (with some amazing voice acting need i say), a massive new explorable area that links into the og game but also adds new mini events and dynamic side quests as a simple after thought... I mean I haven't given PL justice and they've done more than what I'm saying. It was not surprising because every Witcher expansion was always the gold standard just as PL is to CP 2077. They should consider scrapping everything and going back to the drawing board; to approach game design from a perspective of making a "good game" instead of making a game that is high tech or impressive or well received. When Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion came out, those titles took so many risks, and they were so innovative. Underneath the bells and whistles there was the soul of an indie game. I'm sure that there are plenty of very talented people in the team: the artists, programmers, 3D modellers, etc. But the people calling the shots: the directors and designers; I get the feeling that these are 50 or 60 year old industry veterans who are completely out of touch. If they were to take a back seat and let some of the new blood to make decisions then we wouldn't have the dumpster fire of Starfield.

It was worse for me. I got the game at launch. I absolutely loved it at first. However, the more I played, the worse it felt. The flaws started to creep in. The first hit was when I found an "abandoned" station that seemed familiar. I could have sworn I had seen it elsewhere but couldn't put place exactly when and where. Then when I went to the interior, it finally did hit me: I *had* seen this base before with another mission on another planet. It even had the same exact NPCs spawned in the same exact locations talking about the same exact things. I noticed it more with other locations as I played. It was honestly one of the most disappointing realizations I had while playing any game. There's so much more. You can write a paper on Starfield's many issues. There's people that have hours long videos talking about the issues in detail with the game, and the points are legitimate.

Oof. So, they have 1M planets and had a DLC on one empty planet rather than building on space, new environments, and had one mission in the same place? They could have added some better environments for existing planets and made maps more like Mass Effect, just filled the planets with less planets. I have game pass and haven’t bothered downloading it. All they had to do was delete some systems (no one would have noticed) and just consolidated. DLC with better areas or update current ones, space battle, new items, weapons, leveling- boom. What’s the issue? If time is an issue, how can modders fix the UI in days or 1/10th of the time? It’s wild.

I don't consider Emil represntative of the entire whole. I'm sure there are honest developers at Bethesda, who realize their studio fell behind and failed to catch up 6-8 years ago. Unfortunately, if they voiced their concerns publicly, let alone internally, their jobs would most likely be put in jeopardy. In th former scenario, I can understand taking disciplinary action. That said, Bethesda's upper-managment cannot keep living in denial. Even if that is their job, PR-wise. My personal opinion? Microsoft should take Bethesda's leadership to task. Threaten their job security and maybe, just maybe, the studio will either upgrade their engine tech or use something more advanced and easy to learn, like Unreal. Yes, I know many have qualms about software hegemony - I, too, have my concerns. Still, if leaving the aging Creation Engine behind results in greater creative freedom for Bethesda's hard-working devs, and it ends with customer satisfaction, that's a sacrifice I think we should all be comfortable accepting.

Having standards and raising standards, is evolution of the industry at the most basic level. Companies strive to actually make quality titles to a.) evolve a franchise or b.) compete and out do competitors. Look what happened with Atari back in the day when there was no competition or quality control. The market crashed.

Im currently playing the base game again to do the dlc and while the game can still be fun it is annoying how the quest givers work. In past titles you'd notice something, you could ignore it or investigate, leading on a spiraling quest, but starfield, it's like the npc's know your the player character, literally run to you to tell you about bs that leads to a quest, like walking around a guard is talking about a complaining customer, now it's my problem, maybe if i saw the event unfold and i was invested I would, but the heavy handedness of 80 quests popping up visiting a city is effing annoying, let along trying to buy anything and the vendors have to tell you about their family history ffs, if those things were addressed, let alone organic events you can CHOOSE to engage with would be welcoming.

It really upsets me that all these companies seem to have forgotten WHY we bought their games. Bethesda used to mean giant open worlds with endless hours of content. They were always messy and buggy, but you could tell the love and passion that went into creations of that size. And now it seems like they want to give us the opposite and then wonder why we don't want it.

I will admit I bought into the hype around Starfield's release. I bought the deluxe edition. I forgot that I even had the game until I went to steam page for Shattered Space to check reviews, and saw "this item is already in your library". I downloaded it and tried it. It simply isn't great. It has some interesting moments and pretty points of interest, but it's just more of what was offered in the base game. Sure, they added cars and whatnot, but it ultimately still feels like a 12-year-old game with a shiny coat of paint. I hate to say this, but I don't have faith in Bethesda as a studio. They're stuck in the past.

I completely agree with your take on starfield. I dont know why they went so hard into the procedurally generated worlds route when no mans sky's initial release showcased the limitations of that design back almost a decade ago. Whats the point of having 1000 planets to explore if there is literally nothing interesting to find? The game would have been SO COOL if instead focused on a singular star system with like 5-8 planets + some moons, space stations and asteroids. Have each planet be an interesting hand crafted location around the size of a standard fallout map. with unique locations, wildlife, factions, and what not. Some planets could be more wild west, some could be unexplored and mysterious, and some could be massive metropolis's. I also think the decision to make humans the only sentient species was a bad idea.. its just boring. Have like some alien species that visited humanity and showed us how to do space travel in order to have another trading ally, Or to get our help from some exterior threat.

What Bethesda should do with Starfield is what Hello Games did with No Man's Sky, improve existing mechanics, animations, interaction, more depth, more quality content, and then, after years of working the game out, release a proper expansion that enhances and rework the game systems to its full potential.

They told Todd Howard that they couldn't do 1000 planets and do it correctly. He demanded this and look at what we got. They should have made 10 great planets that are Skyrim level in design. Then a year later drop a dlc that adds two more fully fleshed out planets. Rinse and repeat each year until TES 6 comes out.

$30 is what you'd expect for a full expansion. Dragon Age: Awakening cost $40. Oblivion's Shivering Isles was $30. Civ V's Gods and Kings was $30. I can't find the exact cost of Frozen Throne on release, but it was somewhere in that range. I don't think this is a matter of "raised expectations". Rather, I think this is a backlash against the industry demanding we lower expectations we've had for decades and gaslighting us about doing it. Or giving excuses for why we should push the bar lower and lower over the years.

Phil Spencer strongly needs to focus on quality of their games over monetary practices. These practices ruined Killer Instinct, Halo 5 and infinity, and even Gears of war 4 and 5 which both felt rushed and lacked the epic feel from their bosses we felt with the Gears trilogy. Now the lack of care for Quality has leaked its way into Star Field which could’ve been better if it was online and kept frequent updates like Fallout 76. Let’s not forget about Red-fall that was a clear warning on whats to come!

Only thing Bethesda ever seems to know how to do is make packaged glitches where a game breaks out. Last I looked into the matter, up to Starfield, they were still using the _exact same engine_ for all the Elder scroll games dating back to what they licensed to shove out Morrowind? And they reused that for fallout, elder scrolls online and refuse to address *any* of the billions of bugs left in there since pre-alpha. CDPR wasn't even on the map because the only time I ever heard of their name before cyberpunk, was about Yahtzee's review of _The Witcher_ (the first one), where the game was basically emblematic of a collection of turbo-nerds who got off more on the hours it took to troubleshoot than it did to actually *play a damn game* properly. That said turbo nerds took his derogatory term and turned it into their label of excellence speaks to the lack of self awareness to realize what he was griping about. And back to cyberpunk, the 1.0 launch and its miserable performance are exactly why I have less-than-zero interest in ever touching it. Back to Bethesda... Has _nobody_ in corporate taken a moment to realize that Todd Howard _hasn't released a finished game ever_ in his life in the games industry? How in anything is he still allowed to be employed, or allowed into a games studio anywhere? I can't wrap my head around it. A lot of fanboys are like "but, but, muh fallout" and all I've seen since the 1990s is just Bethesda being absolutely pathetic in the amount of unresolved bugs in their products. Why? Because all too often those bugs *negatively impact my experience whenever I give their software a chance.* It's more of a surprise when their crap _doesn't_ crash within minutes. Why would I willingly give money to a studio that is so apathetic about releasing a finished much less working game?

I really hope this would be a wake up call for Bethesda. They've been lazy since Skyrim (heck, even since Oblivion they started showing those signs) and Starfield is at their laziest. It almost feels like they were thinking "we have the most mod-friendly game engine ever, we have lots of faithful fans and seasoned modders, so let's make a very large-scaled game with tons of empty spaces so modders and fans can create contents all by themselves. It will just work" but they completely forgot that the game needs to be good first if they want community to build it up by themselves

All Starfield had to do was to release no more than 10 planets. The size of skyrim with at least half the content of skyrim on each planet. Then they could have coasted by every year by adding a new planet with as much or if not more content. And this could have been a live service that lasted years. And if they ever wanted more money, they could sprinkle. In some other DLC contents along the way.

The way that I see it is that the only reason to not send out review copies in advance is because they want more people to buy the game before seeing any reviews. Companies will give a bunch of other excuses, but the reality is that none of those other reasons really hold any water, even if they make sense on the surface. The bigger issue with Starfield and why I still have no interest in it is that when a lot of the issues were brought up Bethesda doubled down on what most of their fans are calling out as bad decisions. If most of your fan base is saying that there were bad choices made, then you made some bad choices. Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky developers admitted that they made some bad decisions and were willing to change those to ultimately make much better games. I think that until Bethesda management is willing to say that some of the choices that they made just make for a bad game, Starfield doesn't stand much chance at becoming what it can be.
