Those paid mods that Bethesda said weren't paid mods turned out to be paid mods and also worse than paid mods.
The Creation Club has gifted a bounty unto Fallout 4, and it looks like things are little too much like microtransactions and mods got welded together horrifically.

From talking to the modders that I used to test for CC is terrible. 1. Quest mods and such are not allowed due to being ''untestable due to time required'. 2. Large packs are not allowed because 'it might make smaller mods seem like poor value'. 3. All the creation club mods are being installed on hard drives via updates to get around the 2gb loose file restrictions on consoles. CC is just getting modders to make micro transactions because any really great mods may ' undermine the official dlc '

Yeah, this is pretty much a shit-show from Bethesda from day one. Not because 'players won't pay for what they used to get for free!'-yadda yadda, but because Bethesda will be shit, and won't put up enough resources to make their service worth anything. It's 'Microtransactions we didn't have to make', the Rip-Off Edition.

Worst part is, it also updates the executable file, which means it has been breaking existing mods, both those that use F4SE, as well as those that don't. Some people are even theorizing that they will have to do updates like this everytime they release a pack of new "mini DLC". Say goodbye to your hard-drives. If you haven't already, and you aren't too late, make sure you tell Steam to "update only when I launch the game", and only play Fallout 4 in offline mode. Don't forget to do this with Skyrim Special Edition as well, if you play that.

Bethesda didn't even monetize correctly. You shouldn't be able to just buy the mods you want. The mods should be in loot boxes. They can even have tiered unlockables. Every crate should contain 3 Pip-Boy reskins and a premium character skin. But that isn't the exciting part, each crate has a chance to contain a minor side quest, a 1 in 20 chance of custom weapons, and a 1 in 100 chance to get the ultimate loot: the unofficial bugfix patch!
@zonQe
@zonQe 7 жыл бұрын
How about buying mods in parts, like DC Legends. You'll have hundreds (welll, ok tens) of mods, 50 pieces each. You buy 100 pieces for 30 dollars just to have all those pieces split evenly between all available mods. You can never play any mod until you've spent like $2k, when they finally unlock all at once. Hitler would've been proud, Bethesda!
@kappaross6124
@kappaross6124 7 жыл бұрын
Or or or or or, why not combine the two systems? You pay for microtransactions that allow you to buy a loot box that gives you a "puzzle piece" or whatever of the mod, and you have to unlock all the pieces in order to access the mods. Why are we giving them ideas?
@bradford433

There's also a problem with how the Creation Club make you download every single mods available which from what I have heard can be 2-4GB right now. So now Bathesda make you download a chunk of data onto your harddrive which you cant access unless you pay them money. Go look at Gopher vid on the matter for all information, and good luck to all console player who have Skyrim and Fallout 4 out there.

If you download an unofficial Skyrim patch, around 40 of the changes come from me personally. Fixing their game. And I barely even know what I'm doing. I just know how to look at the script for an item that crashed the game, and replace the comma with a period. Or how to attach a rock to the terrain correctly.

Are you kidding me...? Are you saying a lot of the errors in Bethesda's games come from simple typos like that...? Lol that's just sad :( I knew they weren't the best developers around but that's pretty damn sloppy!
@amberbaum4079
@amberbaum4079 7 жыл бұрын
I dunno. Human error on these huge ass open sandbox yadda yadda worlds seem to be the norm. Or at least for Bethesda. At this point I would have thought that they would have developed a script that checks for these minor typo errors...but I guess not. I mean, it would makes sense to do that since they build a lot of these open world games.
@BaileyZK
@BaileyZK 7 жыл бұрын
But who's going to check the script that checks for typos for typos!? They'll have to make a script that looks for typos in the script that looks for typos in their games. :O but then who's going to check the script that looks for typos in the script that looks for typos in their games, FOR TYPOS!? basically what I'm saying is incompetent people can't make a tool to fix their incompetency because they're too incompetent :P
@amberbaum4079
@amberbaum4079 7 жыл бұрын
I have no clue if it is whether due to incompetency, them not having enough time, not enough beta tester who are throughout or just basic human error after writing code X for the Ys time.(BTW was Bethesda DOOM also this buggy? I really think it affect this big worlds with tons of code, variables and branching) I just think it would be worthwhile investment on their part to make something like that for themselves. It would pay off too, because they could use it for all their other projects. Basically they could develop it in another environment and use test codes that needs to be checked. If that works then how about letting the script run loose on some small part of their code for that game that is in development right now. Of course this should happen parallel, but still isolated to not fuck things up. It doesn't really need to be big team. Just people who are very familiar with how Bethesda structures their game code.
@OrangeyChocolate
@OrangeyChocolate 7 жыл бұрын
Amberbaum It's funny, because DOOM 2016 was actually pretty damn solid after the huge patch made to fix the dreadful loading times, among other things. Even pre-patch I only encountered one instance where I had to reload the game. I suppose it's a little easier to fix a corridor shooter than a sprawling open world (not that I'm defending their shit at all), but with the budget and the staff at their disposal you'd think they could at least roll out with code that fucking works in the first place.

I can't imagine the state TES 6 will be in by the time it is finally released, to be honest. I'm almost expecting micro-transactions to join guilds or unlock powers or to progress through the story lines. Even after already paying $60 for the game. Imagine this - Instead of passing a small test to join the mages guild, you have to pay a £5 tuition fee. Instead of bullying some shop keepers to join the thieves guild, you have to pay them a cut, £5. Instead of killing some old woman to join the Dark Brotherhood, you have to cut out a portion of your own soul and send it to Bethesda's studios. Two days later the postman hands you a note with a black hand printed on it with the words "You Paid!" written beneath. The next night you wake up and Todd fucking Howard is sitting atop your wardrobe and tells you where the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary is located. Each time you return, you have to send £1 to the void to enter. Does anyone remember when you would get a color guidebook, a map and a poster inside the game case for £30? I do!
@ClayMann
@ClayMann 7 жыл бұрын
Super bunnyhop found out that big companies like Ubisoft make more money from micro transactions than they do selling the games and all DLC's put together. So they are big business and driving the industry. I think you can expect Skyrim 6 will be 100% designed around these transactions. You'll always feel like if you just buy this addon it'll be easier to do this next thing or grind for hours an d hours. The only hope really is that modders can come in later and break the game enough that it behaves more like a real RPG and not a skinner box designed to suck cash out of your wallet. I expect a lot will be online so probably not. I do remember those days with maps I'd put on the wall and my trusty grid pad for mapping out dungeons in pencil.

I can't tell the difference between bottled water and tap water. At all. Infact, the amount of processes that tap goes through so it's clean enough to drink is surprising. Bottled water is an illusion it's cleaner than tap water, a bit like Bethesda pulling out paid "quality" mods when hundreds of them are free.

Gawd, all those freaking updates, breaking the Fallout 4 Script Extender that enables half the mods in existence... every single time. Know what I did? Found a mod to back up the game exe, and just kept changing it back... but then I figured out you can just set Steam not to auto-update the base Fallout 4 exe, and just run the script extension only... so now my copy of Fallout 4 is modded to the gills and time-locked for stability. Not like any of those lousy updates were fixing the crap settler AI, the crap loading times, the crap construction, crap balance, crap story... any of the crap, really... just adding more paid mods, I assume. Also I got a mod to remove the Creation Club splash thing on the game menu. Thank you, modders. ;)

If it turned a frustratingly buggy good game into a streamlined polished great game then it might actually be worth paying for those additional man hours to do ESPECIALLY for a game that that is uber modded which usually means an extensive lifespan. Of course, they would have to base the worth of such a patch on the number of sales of the unpolished version but most people would psychologically rather have a buggy good version than think they didn't receive the available added cost polished edition for what they already spent unless it was offered by a 3rd party.

Davivd2 I don't think that even they are that stupid to try that. Just look at how big the gta and taketwo thing blew up over just that basically. Bethesda would be literally killing their own company at that point. Plus on top of that gta mods are only pc and look at how massive that uproar was (and rightfully so)...fallout and skyrim both have mods for consoles so the amount of people affected would be so much greater. If Bethesda even issues 1 dmca against a mod for this reason, they will create the biggest uproar in modern gaming

I am on PC so I am fully aware of mods and Nexus. But this is about Bethesda being so ignorant and stupid and shoving paid mods down our throats once again. If they had released something actually worth the money like a weapons pack which adds lots of new guns or a few enjoyable questlines to enrich the experience ... Fine. But not one Horse-Power armor (is this even funny any more?), one gun and two new paintjobs for the Pip-Boy altogether for more than 5€. That's just a rip-off. I am sorry, but that's what it is. The creation club launch is a disaster.

Alright class, let's sit down and do some simple math: a full priced game (usually) is around 60 dollars, correct? The Hellfire Armor alone is worth five dollars. If we compare and contrast, Bethesda is basically saying that one quest and one suit of armor is worth 1/12 of their full priced product. The Hellfire Armor alone is worth 12% of Fallout 4. Let that sink in a little bit.

Bethesda for a while has been hands down the best company out there with providing dlc actually worth the asking price with most of them coming with entire new areas loaded with new stuff to do in them. Lol, Jim have you heard? Apparently the Creation Club/Paid Mods automatically downloads all current mods to your hard drive without your consent, and this was reported during their beta which lasted one day. Sooo~ This flaw was reported before the beta was up and there was no response from Beth, in fact you could say they willfully ignored this and pushed the creation club out the door leaving it as is. Which is asinine, because you can just use the GECK to unlock all the paid mods they've forcefully downloaded onto your computer without paying and they can't do anything about it. In fact this forced downloading, which bypasses Steam's settings about 'updating' (cause this happens during the update that adds the CC to your game whether you want it or not) but noticeably this is sort of... illegal? At the very least it can be likened to malware. Bethesda... WTF!?

You know, Pete Hines has been trying to save the face of Bethesda by pretending everything is okay with the Creation Club, but then he goes and says that "Well, not everyone is against it since people are downloading it" yet people are downloading ALL CONTENT despite if they bought it or not, and therefore cannot be used a statistic. Pete Hines also says that the Creation Content is more like a "mini-DLC", but if that's the case, why isn't it given to people who bought the Season Pass?

@KitsyX
@KitsyX 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call this ethically bankrupt... They're giving modders who'd normally get paid nothing for their work a chance to work freelance, to make small items for their games. It would be better if they paid them more to make bigger stuff, but understandably that'd be a financial risk on their part, which I don't blame them for not taking. They're maybe getting some cheaper labour and talent scouting, but that's hardly a bad thing overall. The only real problem I'd say there is is that they're using a purchasable in-game currency, or whatever, instead of real money, like how the Wii shop and the Xbox store used to do with their stores, normally leaving you with a few points you couldn't use... The quality of this stuff not being as good will mainly hurt Bethesda since most people will just use free mods instead... Although I guess the creator club might be the only option for PS4 users... I dunno... I guess there's also the problem of the game updating to install them all on your hard drive, but I wouldn't consider that as an ethical issue exactly... That said, I do think we should complain about the issues in my last paragraph... I just think "ethically bankrupt" is a gross exaggeration for these specific issues... It's not like they're promising to pay these modders then refusing to after or something (or at least we haven't heard of it yet). Microtransactions are kinda sucky, but unless they're changing the game to make you buy them and/or they try to shut down the free mods, I don't think it really counts as exploitative or anything really.
@HickoryDickory86
@HickoryDickory86 7 жыл бұрын
Your mistake, @KitsyX, is thinking that modders mod games for money. They do not. Never have they been able to sell their mods, and they all know this. Yet they got into modding anyway, knowing fully and completely from the get-go that there was no money to be made for it. Why? Because they love the game, and they want to make their own unique content for it, and they want to share their work with others so that they can enjoy it too. It is not about money, and it never was. So this argument does not at all excuse what Bethesda is trying to do. In fact, it is truly a signal of immorality because they are making modding all about money, not about doing something you love and enjoy. They are monetizing what was done for free, for fun. So yeah, very immoral.

For those of you who want a perspective from a modder as well as Jim on the Creation Club, this video by Gopher is fantastic. The TL:DR of it is, even if you don't use the creation club all of the files added to the creation club will be in your game and that will make it annoying slow on PC and after a while Unbearably slow on console. Which most of you probably knew. But another big thing is that Skyrim Script Extender may be unusable along with the Creation Club meaning users will either be forced to stop updates about NOW, or get rid of their script extender which disables all "game changing" mods. As always thank God for Jim

Couple of points worth noting. There will never be more expansive mods in their store becuase more expansive mods require scripts, the script extender, load order tweaked and possibly level list patches etc. Secondly the reason the update was 2.2GB is because the assets to the paid mods were downloaded into your game directory. Buying them simply downloads the esp file to make them work. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how bad an implimentation that is. Forcing me to have content installed on my hard drive I do not own nor have any intention of owning will make me see Fallout 4 as bloatware if they keep that pattern up
@DazThor
@DazThor 7 жыл бұрын
I was unaware of this. Maybe I'm asking the wrong guy here but do you think it's possible that if someone is clever enough it's possible re-create the .esp file? Even if not, surely people can just buy the mod and then upload it somewhere. Mod piracy sees a resurgence?

So right out of the gate, they fucked up on the two big things I was pointing out to my friend about their pitch of the Creation Club. Existing free mods turned up in those two Fallout 4 suits when they promised they wouldn't allow that... and they had to be visually adapted to Bethesda's fugly-ass vanilla design aesthetics of the game because their developers will demand congruence so none of the mod items stick out like a sore thumb... or make their shit LOOK like shit by comparison for being too good looking. What is wrong with this fucking industry....

It's like Bethesda don't even realize that the modding community is the only reason that FO4, and especially skyrim, are even somewhat relevant nowadays. It's like how long war increases the life cycle of xcom. without new, interesting, content, the game would slip out of interest for most people. By making people pay for re-skins with monopoly money, Not only are they dividing the community, but they also manage to push people way from modding, and any new games in either series, if they ever make any, will likely have much reduced lifespans, which is unhealthy for massive open worlds that take years to make.

You realize that's because of the mods, right? Being able to add hundreds of mods and completely change the game every time gives it infinite replay-ability. Without the modding community, you'd only have the base game, which, after a few playthroughs with your melee/rogue/mage/lawful/evil characters, there's nothing left to do. A large portion of that 20k are playing extremely modded games, and that's whats made it somewhat still relevant.

Skyrim is a 5 year old game that has stayed in the limelight purely from the assistance of its modding community. Fallout 4 suffered heavily from, and continues to endure, the indignation over the distinct lack of advancement in either technological or literary avenues. Part of the reason people continue to play FO4 can be laid at the feet of brand recognition, but is equally likely to be the massive amount of modding assistance that has been leant to it since launch. Yes, both games have a considerable number of players active per day, however they most certainly would not have those numbers without the modding community.

Thetracker69 you summed it up perfectly. That was the reason I was in defense of this system from its conception. If it meant getting third-party expansions I would have happily paid. If Bethesda wants their system to flourish they better start commissioning some talanted modders to make something a little more worthwhile otherwise they will not be seeing much return on investment. At least this one won't be flooded with troll submissions like steam"s attempt was.

To be fair, a piad mod system can be benificial to all participants, BUT it has to be at the launch of a game, so no one can rip-off existing free mods and charge for them and for the exact same reason it has to be highly curated. All Bethesda had to do was introducing paid mods with their next installments, not when modding for the game is at it's peak. And maybe as a bonus: DON'T ripoff your modders with a fucking 80:20 split (don't know the actual split, but it was very much in favor of Bethesda).

None of them did. I told them a little about the game industry's scams. How Roblox takes most of the profit from its user generated content. How people used to get really mad about paying for mods. How some streamers get free in-game loot, to convince kids like them to pay for it. I know they'll all go home and keep spending money on Roblox. But hopefully, they'll think a little more carefully about it.

This creation club combined with the single player micro-transactions in the upcoming shadow of Mordor potentially being successful means very bad times ahead for the video-game industry. Remember these things only need to work once to spread through the entire industry and the future will be pretty bad with games being tweaked to be nigh-on beyond completion without excessive time investment unless you literally pay-to-win via micro-transactions. This will become the new standard for single player titles. In addition, if paid mods take off then free modding will hunted down left and right by company lawyers issuing cease and desist notifications to ward off anyone trying to cut into paid mod profits by providing free distractions. Jeez no more mods and companies gouging you for every penny so they can incrementally unlock content in the games they release half finished. Futures lookin pretty freakin rosy for the video game industry...:(
