At Hammersmith on his first ever tour he sang it sitting on a riser up behind the kit and just dropped off it and on to his stool for the fill. A cool moment. Pretty much the same arrangement though except maybe without the synthesised chorusy vocals (although maybe I’ve just forgotten that, it was 40 plus years ago 😂).

This MAN is a legend in his own time. Few get there when they are still alive. But Phil has done it! This is a great video and a wonderful song... I find it amazing that it appears that he is just strolling about the stage. NO. His time is perfect. He arrives at his drum kit just in time for his classic solo. Phil just has to be Phil. No need to set the place on fire or blow it up. The audience came to see & hear Phil.. I can not blame them. Phil is great in so many ways!!!!!!!!!!! This is a masterpiece!!

Whenever I see a Phil Collins video, I make it a priority to point out, that although he is British, nobody has done more to preserve the history of The Republic Of Texas! Phil has spent so much money collecting Texas Historic Items, especially those pertaining to The Alamo, and then donating most of those items to The State Of Texas! God bless Phil Collins and God bless Texas!

But it happens to everyone! We loss Tina recently, again bummer -- the Acid Queen is dead. Boo!!!!!! I love the audiences response to him getting to the drums!! They know whats next!!!! "He's not throwing them around to show off" - I love how purposeful he is with the things he does. Like the use of a vocoder on his voice, as a contrast, a counter point. It's much more impactful than e.g. using it for the whole the song. Just like that iconic drum fill. It has such an impact (among other things) because he doesn't overdo it. Because drums were very subdued up to this point. Say more with less. You don't need to put your whole arsenal on display the whole time, every time. I think that's a valuable skill to learn, not only in singing. BB King could say more with a single note than a lot of players can with a whole song

This is a such great song. The drum breakdown is something every dad ever will imitate. The way he slowly moves towards the drums hypes up the crowd since they know what’s coming. Your reaction to that was wonderfully cut and full of emotion. Love it Also fun fact. People think this is romantic because of how it sounds. It’s not all if you read the lyrics For another drummer singer check out Jen from Skillet. Most don’t have a clue how hard it is to sing without the drums affecting the voice and vice versa

It’s super interesting to see how he’s reproducing production techniques from the record in a live setting. They used a vocal limiter with settings that emphasised those hard consonants at start of the words, and how you talk about the ways that he’s reproducing that attack with glottal stops and the like is very cool. He also seems to be making some interesting decorative choices on words in the song that had echo/delay/reverb or other effects on them. Thanks for the great video!

I have it on good authority that (before his physical issues) that if you were to meet Phil in person, and didn't recognize him, he would just tell you that he's a drummer. Also the reason why that simple, yet iconic fill hits you so hard, is because you have to wait foe nearly the entire song for it to come in. It's a flawless example of how to build tension to a critical mass before releasing it!

Saw him live and he was amazing! His son joined him on drums for this song! Do not like the remix of this song tho, if you’ve ever heard it....destroys the whole mood!

I miss that voice on MTV. When I was a very young boy he was the voice on radio and TV. I especially love the Invisible Touch record.
