Actually Phil Collins is a drummer that can sing :). He does lead vocals for Genesis, but was originally just their drummer. Genesis's original lead singer was Peter Gabriel, and Phil took over when Peter left. While unusual, its not unknown. Dave Grohl the lead singer for Foo Fighters was the drummer in Nirvanna and also did play drums and guitar in Foo Fighters. The Most famous Drummer that was a singer is one of the best female singers of all time - Karen Carpenter.

You have to understand how much affection the U.K. has for Phil Collins. He played in London for Live Aid then took Concord to the US and played there in the same day. The robotic effect you heard is real-tie processing of his vocal by a ‘Vocoder’ type synth processor. He was the drummer for a hugely successful band called Genesis before they broke up.

Phill Collins / Genesis absolute legend here in UK. I was fortunate enough, back in the mid 90's to light his appearance at the Jonathan Ross Friday Night Live Show (I was a studio lighting guy back then in Wandsworth London - Ewart TV Studios). We ran the show every Friday night, it took the day to set up the show for the evening. After the show we always had a buffet and some drinks and I got to meet Phil .... he was the most down to earth amazing guy you could ever want to meet! I got to meet many singing stars back then and when they'd gone, us lighting & sound engineers would sleep over at the studio and de-rig on the Saturday morning ready for a fresh start on Monday. Great times! Music in 80's and early 90's was much more of a 'must have' passion with many more huge live tours.

I finally got to see Phil live in 2004 on this tour in Oklahoma City. I grew up with Genesis and Phil it was a bucket list item I got to check off. This song has the most recognizable drum breaks in the history of music. I heard it when it came out. Young folks like you have heard this in the movie Hangover. When they wake up the next day Mike Tyson sings it and beats one of the guys up.

The "eerie" sound you were hearing was a vocoder (used by keyboardist Brad Cole). It is a device that is used to synthesize the human voice. Anyway, Phil was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004 and it was truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

Not quite true - When Peter Gabriel quit Genesis as lead singer it took a while for the band to work out who the best replacement was. Suddenly it dawned on them that Phil had been doing backing & occasional lead vocals.... & he became the lead singer..... but that gave a problem with live performances.... they tried a few different session drummers including Bill Bruford! After a couple more albums, Steve Hackett also quit, so they also needed a new guitarist! Famously, Darryl & Chester bumped into each other in the airport departure lounge & realised they were both flying to join Genesis.... When Phil started his solo work, they were the first people he asked to join him.... neither needed an audition....!

When his voice sounded robotic, I'm almost positive that it was being layered over that of the keyboardist, who clearly has a microphone above the keyboards he was using in this piece. That voice was run through what's called a vocoder, which changes the harmonics of the voice that's put in, by working it through synthesizer circuits. If you listen carefully, it is not synchronized with Phil's voice, and several time starts before Phil does.

That robotic vocal effect was most likely some sort of vocoder instrument, hard to tell whether they somehow fused it with Phil's vocals or whether the keyboardist or backing vocalist were providing the source vocals. Well, they certainly used a vocoder, with the keyboardist, Brad Cole, historically. There's actually a video up from a concert in Berlin on Phil Collins' 1990 tour with a camera following Cole for the first four & a half minutes of the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6jCeY2OlseUeLM (Other, more conventional concert videos from '90 also do a good job of catching Cole using the vocoder.) As for this performance, I think there's a good chance that you're right and it's still vocoder. You can catch a glimpse of what appears to be him using it at 10:47, and it seems to be why he's using his mic at 11:24. And at about the 8:58 mark, the vocoder seems to say "tonight" before the lead vocal does; I think it gets just ahead of Phil at 9:25-27, as well.

I was at this show and boy, just like the comment below, once the guitar comes in, I had such Goosebumps until literally the end of the guitar and then the downswept of the guitar into a lower note and all the way into Phil Collins starting. It's amazing how people don't do their research beforehand and realize that he replaced Peter Gabriel as the singer of Genesis and the drummer of Genesis before his own solo career and then Genesis released a later album afterwards with Phil Collins singing with some of the really best songs being on that album Believe it or not ( I can't dance). I've also heard two reactions out of approximately 15 I've watched where those two already knew the song, really wanted to do a reaction of it, and kept saying oh this is definitely a lip sync, but if you know Phil Collins, he's the real deal and always has been. This song is about his divorce originally and has remained obviously towards that. "Cause the pain never shows, but the pain always grows..." "I saw it with my own two eyes. So wipe off that grin, I know where you've been... ".

He wrote this in 1980 after divorcing his first wife when he discovered she'd been having an affair. Hence the slightly menacing and melancholic tone to it. Classic song, and the explosion of drums is iconic.

No auto-tune, but still plenty of "assistance" from the f/x booth. People act like before auto-tune every singer just sang clean without any help. Phil is a great singer, but if you heard this without any f/x at all it would sound very different to your ear, like someone with a good voice singing next to you in the car.

I just found your channel tonight and looked for the big three reactions that everybody does, Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing (Alchemy Live), Disturbed - The Sound of Silence, and this, Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight. I was happy to see two of the three in your list of videos. I would recommend that you do a little research on the artist and song prior to the reaction so that you get an idea of what is being sung about and the artist background. For instance, Phil Collins used to be the drummer for the huge 70's band Genesis. Anyway, I'm glad I found your channel and will be looking out for more great reactions!!!

You want a lead vcalist drummer? Look up The Carpenters. Richard (the writer and guitarist), and Karen (the drumme and vocalist) - yes, a female drummer/lead vocalist! from the 1970's. Her voice was like pure gold running through the smoothest mould you could ever dream of. She was tragically taken away so young (in her 30's i believe). OK, so songs to suggest......"Goodbye to Love", "Rainy days and Mondays", "Calling occupants of interplanetary craft" , "There's a kind of hush". You probably have heard one or two of these. But there is something so unique and special about her voice, you'll never forget it. She was one of the first people i remember to have had Anorexia Nervosa, and it was all over the news when she died. Such a sad life, but she left us the gift of her voice via their recordings. Oh, by the way - the "discs" you always refer to when looking at a drum kit are called cymbals (pronoonced similarly to symbol).

Phil Collins is a GOAT. He is one of the best selling artists of all time...including his solo career (of which this song is a part) and when he was with the band Genesis. From his Wiki article... "Collins's discography includes eight studio albums that have sold 33.5 million certified units in the US and an estimated 150 million records sold worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists.[11] He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band.[12][13] He has won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards (winning Best British Male Artist three times), two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award.[14] He was awarded six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010. He has also been recognised by music publications with induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013.[15][16]" This specific song he wrote during a rather tumultuous time in his life... he was in the middle of a rather bitter divorce with his then wife..this song was about that!
