Lisa is one of the vocal greats! She has stated in several interviews that the pressure from the record label to record and sell a second album plus her making a bad oral agreement to sign with another label (that eventually decided not to sign her) all caused her to go back to background singing. As y’all could probably see, Lisa has a bit of shyness to her. She felt more comfortable singing background. She was a “student” of Luther and Chaka before going to The Rolling Stones , Pink, Tina Turner, and Nine Inch Nails to name of few. Also, she studied opera in college but eventually dropped out due to personal issues. At 63, she is still touring. She doesn’t go this high on this song anymore, but she does go high every now and then, and she is still a beast on the mic! ❤️

There is literally no one I've heard, in my decades of living and loving music, that sings with such technicality, such range, and such emotion as Lisa Fischer. As amazing as Mariah Carey is, the myriad of vocal styling and Impeccably seamless changes from chest, head and falsetto is unmatched by anyone in my opinion. Perfection.

She was a long-time backup singer for Luther Vandross; as a former background singer himself, he was always encouraging his own backup singers to take their careers to the next level. He produced 40% of the tracks on her debut studio album, 1981's _So Intense,_ from which "How Can I Ease the Pain" was the first single and biggest hit. If you haven't watched her section of the 2013 Grammy- and Academy Award-winning documentary _20 Feet from Stardom,_ you should. She explains what made her not want to continue pursuing a solo musical career even after the massive success of _So Intense._ In part she said, "I reject the notion that the job you excel at is somehow not enough to aspire to, that there has to be something more. I love supporting other artists...Some people will do anything to be famous. I just wanted to sing."

I twice suggested Lisa to you about 2 years ago. Glad you've awakened. The most underrated singer of her generation. Lisa is still alive and working in and around my native Brooklyn. At 63 years she can still hit that F6 and is still just as beautiful as ever. Yes, she worked of and on with The Rolling Stones, but most of her major work was done, along with the great Ava Cherry, backing Luther Vandross for 22 years. This video then is a masterclass, not only in vocal technique, but in performance, presentation, and emotional commitment.

Lisa is like the vocal love child of Whitney AND Mariah, combining the best bits of each - Whitney's stregth, warmth and gospel influenced emotionality, with Mariah's airy delicacy and earth-shattering range. She's a vocal gymnast, a technician, but also, a heartfelt performer and story teller. She's probably the best singer most people have never heard of. In a way, thats sad, but also cool. She seems happy doing what she does (mostly backup/group).

I stood in line at Sam Goodie in Honolulu, Hawaii when this album came out. CD's were a popular choice, and cassette tapes were on the verge of extinction, I bought the cassette tape because I couldn't afford the CD, and I played it and played it until it was worn out. For some of us that grew up in the late 70's, 80's, and early 90's we didn't know then how lucky we were, the many gifted singers that came out around that time.

IMO, I think it’s the other way around. Lisa Fisher is EVERYTHING and the ‘greats’ only have segments. On other words, she is this magnificent tower of a building while the greats ate just a mere brick. Fisher is all about the music and being in the front doesn’t matter when one is concerned about the music. There is great talent in the world of back up singers. Their is hard yet they make it seem easy, there’s a complexity being performed by them that is just magical.

Lisa Fischer is amazing! I'm so glad I saw the documentary "20ft from Stardom". I remember hearing Lisa's music back in the day. What a treat to revisit such an artist. Use to be one of the requirements to perform a song was that you actually "could" sing and live no less. Every year the Grammys come and they just hand out awards, cause someone has to win. Sadly, this makes that talent pool weak. Lisa Fischer won a Grammy award tying with Patti Labelle (just so happens Lisa also sang back up on Patti's song as well, mind blowing). Who else was in Lisa's category? Aretha Franklin & Gladys Knight, now that is some legendary singers (Vanessa Williams was included in that group, not the same league. Sorry girl. Loved Ugly Betty.) I've probably gone on too long but how many people can say Chaka Khan (another legend) gave props on their KZbin video? Love you Lisa, your spirit shines through.

She was just (January 4, 2024- January 8, 2024) at the San Francisco Jazz Center. She has changed up her act and the group that she is currently appearing with. I prefer her backing provided by good Jazz musicians because they can improvise better than most other musicians. Still great voice and performance.

IMO as a vocalist, she's better than Whitney and Mariah. But she didn't want that solo path. Now that she's touring, the way she wants, I'm SO HAPPY. Her live shows are incredible. Seeing the mastery in front of you is mesmerizing.

Y’all kill me saying she better than Whitney. Hate when y’all compare different artist. Who all have different voices. Come from a different background of life.

No she's not better than Whitney I hate how yall try to put black female singers against each other her and Whitney are both greats in their own right also Whitney set the standards for singers after her coming into the industry so stop

As I recall she preferred to be a backup singer Luther Vandross( whom she also sang backup for) had to convince her to record an album. Most artists know what comes with being a superstar(selling your soul to the devil)and they want no part of it.
