This was a very enjoyable reaction. The song "S.O.S. (d'un Terrien en détresse)" is originally from a French-Canadian musical called 'Starmania' from the 1970s and is considered one of the most difficult French songs to perform. Dimash is from Kazakhstan. He appears here in the fifth season of Hunan Television's "I Am A Singer" competition. "I Am A Singer" is an annual Chinese music competition between famous and established professional singers. The audience phones in to determine the winner after each episode. It is the same throughout the entire show; 500 with musical backgrounds judge the show by points each week. At 22 years old, Dimash was the youngest participant in the show's history and competed against these professional and top-selling Chinese singers as a 'wildcard' competitor. The competition consists of 14 rounds, lasts almost 4 months, and competitors are eliminated throughout the season. Every performance is live, and no lip-syncing or auto-tune is permitted. Pure unadulterated vocal ability only. Dimash's mother later said that he hoped to reach at least the middle stage of the competition. This was the very first episode of the competition, and Dimash had to go first because he was considered the weakest, given that he was completely unknown to the audience. After this performance, he became a superstar in China overnight. His Chinese competitors called him their "little imported brother." The other already well-known contestants were in absolute awe of him and joked that they might as well go home. Dimash won the first two episodes! He also won the 6th for his rendition of "Adagio," a song made famous by Lara Fabian. First place overall went to the famous Chinese Sandy. Sandy's first album came out before Dimash was even born. Dimash took second place overall; however, he lost by a very narrow margin. He lost a lot of points for his performance of "Uptown Funk." Although Dimash did not win the show, he immediately became a beloved star in China. As part of the contest, all contestants/performers are required to perform one original song they have composed. Dimash sang "Unforgettable Day," a song he wrote when he was still in his teens - it's a love song. He sang in both the original Kazakh and in Chinese, even though he did not speak Chinese at the time and had to have a translator with him throughout the competition. Here is the order of Dimash's performances for The Singer 2017. The contest lasts 14 weeks, but Dimash has only 13 performances because he had already made it into the semi-finals by week 11. 1. All By Myself (English) 10. Unforgettable Day (Mandarin/Kazakh) 11. Bye week - He had already made it into the semis 12. Confessa/Diva Dance (Mandarin/Italian/Alien) (Semi-finals) 13. Michael Jackson Tribute Medley (English) (Finals) 14. Give Me Love (Makhabbat ber maghan) (Kazakh) The last performance was part of the 2017 Biennial Concert and not the competition. It was broadcast live and is an original song written for Dimash.

I heard Dimash in 2018. Accidentally. He was already the mega-star in Russia, Belarus, and China. I expected that he will become known worldwide very, very soon. Ultra-famous. Actually, I wondered even then "how comes that he is not already ultra-famous, worldwide?". And during the last two years I watched "tons" of reactions of people who are "into" music, who are professionals (singers, music-producers, vocal coaches, ... knowledgeable music fans, ...). And just very few of them asked the key question: "How comes that I did not hear about Dimash earlier, much earlier'?". It is the same ... everywhere. I did not hear Dimash on radio. I did not see him on TV. I did not read about him in mazines. He is one of the best singers who ever lived ... . And yet ... today ... when ... farting of some reality-show "star" makes "cover page" on almost all existing world media ... Dimash is ... unknown even to music professionals?!?! The whole world knows Borat from Kazakhstan (a "character" invented by Sasha Baron Cohen (Jew from England) (who mocks everybody, except Jews). And Dimash ... "who is Dimash"? In China, Russia, Belarus, Turkey, he is ... mega star. In Western Europe and USA ... he is ... sabotaged. By media moguls. Or ... I am just an "(antisemite) conspiracy theorist"?! Is there other, "realistic" explanation? The majority of people ... "do not like Dimash, despite his ... miraculous voice, incredible interpretations of many... western mega hits"? Is that ... realistic? I mean ... look at the reactions of ... non-musicians on KZbin. EVERYBODY is ... totally stunned when they hear Dimash. Even those who are not sport-fans know about the best tennis player(s), basketball player(s), soccer player(s), even those who are not music-fans know about many pop-singers, opera-singers, ... and ... music professionals heard for the first time about Dimash ... a few moths ago? What are the odds? Who's "behind" that?

Chinese internet went down this nigth when over 600 million Chinese went online to find out more about DIMASh. The next day he was an over night sensation in China and needed bodyguards to stay with him everywhere he went. He was recognized and applauded when he went out in public. And he hasn't stopped since, in becoming more famous the world over.

I could be wrong, but I think that's the video that first brought him fame. He's done a lot more since then. He's from Kazakstan, and he sings in many languages. His vocal range seems limitless. I'd recommend listening to 'Stranger' next, an English language song.

Thank you. This is from 2017, the Chinese show 'I Am Singer'. This show has seasoned Chinese singers competing. Dimash was called in as a 'wildcard' singer. This is literally the very 1st performance of the show that season. Dimash is from Kazakhstan. He knew no Chinese at the time. Dimash just turned 30 yrs old this last May. Dimash has 7+ octaves and is masterful and beautiful in each. He sings in multiple genres and 15+ languages. This song is one that he started working on in his late teens and continues working on it today. This is the performance that gained him fans (called 'Dears'). His concerts are over 3 hrs. long and one of his last ones had fans of all ages, genres, religions, colors from 77 countries. This is just the tiny tip of the iceberg that is in Dimash's tool belt. You will have goosebumps and tears and will be stunned with each song and performance. Dimash is the best singer/vocalist on the planet!

Thank you for your analysis. From a strictly technical point of view, Dimash is probably one of the most skilled vocalists in the world right now, as he can do a lot of many different techniques equally amazingly, and I'm not just talking about his insane range. Dimash can sing in full voice (i.e. not whistle or vocal fry) from a E2 to an F6. If you include vocal fry and whistle, he can extend even further both ways. But it's not just his range. The guy has been doing some insane stuff throughout his performances. I would suggest watching Sinful Passion next, where Dimash does an insane pentatonic run, after having sustained a crazy B5 flat for an eternity, in one breath. Non ce n'est pas le meilleur ! Il en fait trop sur des chansons qui ne sont pas faite pour. Il a une très bonne technique, mais certaines chansons sont écrites pour être chanter d'une certaine façon sinon cela dénature son message. Ikanaide, Dimash. It is my favorite although every song he does is fantastic. Best voice on the planet said by all. He is a vocal genius. He plays 9 instruments. Composes. Dimash had a 6 octave range here in 2017, now he has over a 7 octave range, his base and baritone registers are beautiful, now he’s older. Here he was 22, now he just turned 30 years old. He is exponentially better today, believe it or not! Since you are an opera singer you might appreciate Olimpico (aka Ogni Pietra) my favourite performance of this song is from the composer’s KZbin channel, Igor Krutoy, which is from one of Dimash’s solo concerts. I think there are around 40,000 people in the audience who witnessed this absolute masterpiece of a performance!

Why do people recommend that one so much? It happens to be my least favorite, of all his SOS performances. I really dislike when he kneels on the stage, and sings directly down, into the floor. And don’t get me started, on the goofy animated wings that pop up behind him. JMO

That one was a digital concert without a visible audience to him due to the pandemic. As he couldn’t see his audience, he had no one to look at and ended up concentrating even more on the song and feeling it even more. It’s not my favorite performance of SOS either, but I also know why people usually recommend it. In that version, his low notes sound deeper and more mature (and that part I really, really like! I love his low register), and it makes the contrast between his low and high notes even more evident. Also, the stage is beautiful… but the wings, well, I’m not gonna talk about them because, honestly, I don’t mind them at all. My favorite performance of SOS is the Slavic Bazaar.
