In the evening I like to turn off the sewing machine and do some quiet handwork. It's a peaceful way to end the day. I am sharing here a few of my current projects.
Most of my projects are found at the thrift store or handed down to me.
Here are some kits on amazon:

I have many "unfinished projects" so thank you! One I did finish was candlewicking. I was so intrigued so looked up its history. It's is a very old craft that was developed in the southern US before the Revolutionary War and was considered a “protest” craft. Plantation workers picked the cotton that was shipped back to England for carding and weaving. It was sold back to the same people who had harvested it, at exorbitant prices so people began making their own fabric. Because dyes were expensive, they left the cloth its natural colour. To make it more appealing, they embroidered using the separated stands of the wicks used in candle making. Clever!

I always have something in my hands at night too. Usually knitting or crotchet. I have many framed embroideries, cross stitch and tapestries on the wall in my sewing room from over the years. Love them all💗🇦🇺

My quiet evening sewing is crocheting baby blankets to donate to our local crisis pregnancy center. I love using my skills to help others!

I used to enjoy needle point but haven't done any in a long time. I'm cleaning my craft room and had placed my thread, yarn, crochet hooks and knitting needles in the donate box. Seeing you stich yours reminded me how much I do enjoy it. I'm going to dig my stiching things out of the donate box and keep them a while longer. I've donated them twice before and ended up buying them again! I know I'll regret it if I get rid of them. That stuff is so expensive now. Thank you for taking your time and sharing with. 🇺🇸

I enjoy candlewicking. Have done several. I am able to sit with my husband while he watches TV and crochet knit or hand piece little projects.

I really need to buy some yarn and start a knitting project. A lot of evenings, I want to go upstairs to work in my sewing room, but I want to spend some time with my husband so I end up watching TV with him with nothing to work on. I used to knit all the time and just need to get back to it.

I inherited my mother-in-laws Candlewicking projects, many finished. I framed them for my adult children for Christmas gifts as a remembrance of their grandmother. Thanks for sharing. Motivates me to finish her unfinished projects.

The red needlepoint is awesome. I think it would make a beautiful cross-body bag with a red flowery background.

Hi y’all, I’ve always enjoyed hand stitching. To date I’ve done cross stitch(simple x stamped pattern), embroidery, a couple tiny needlepoint, some crochet(self taught), tried knitting a little never more than a few rows😮, A candle wick project unfinished. I have my grandmothers tatting shuttle but know nothing about it, I never saw her do it. Unfinished projects, yes I have a verryyy large suitcase of UFO🙃. I just can’t let them go🥲 I’m in the process of getting my very own space, so I’ve kinda put all/most projects on hold; but I can hardly wait to be diggin in my stash👏👏👏🤔😝 Beth I appreciate all that you offer us; including the comments from viewers!!! ❤️😀

I have to have something in my hands in the evening while the TV is on. I’d be stitching, and my husband would ask “are you gonna watch this?!” I answered “it’s Dude where’s my car, not Checkov, I think I can keep up!”

How lovely! I think the candle wick panel would look really nice in the centre of a quilt. If the fabric is a bit thin you could back it with some thin white cotton material. I can just see it with some colourful patchwork. Love your channel Beth, it’s a lovely gentle place to retreat from all the madness. Jennie from the UK ❤ thank you so much!

I did some candlewicking progects years ago. It is so beautiful. I stil have one needlepoint canvas in my bin that needs to be stitched. I usually do some hand work in the evenings. It is very relaxing. (Unless I make a mistake).

As thin as the fabric is, I have put a solid color fabric behind it and framed it. Turned out beautiful. I think it's wonderful that you take these thrift store gems and complete them.

Hi Beth…that was really interesting. I have heard of candle wicking but never seen how it is stitched. I think a zipper bag would be lovely for the first project.. I decided not to use my sewing machine today and am hand stitching a redwork project.. Thanks for sharing.. Dottie x

you reminded me of a candlewicking project I started in the early 80''s! I'll have to pull it out along wish some ribbon embroidery projects and some hardanger. Have you done any Hardanger?

I love candle wicking. I once found an article on the history in a magazine at the library. It is amazing what they used to make. Would like to find more patterns but both patterns and thread are hard to find.

I use to teach candle wickng as part of in home classes with a company called Creative Expressions. I think I still have a pillow kit around somewhere. Candle wicking is embroidery stitches using a thicker thread. Basically the same type of thread used to make candles. Colonial in nature. I need to find my kit.
