BlackPink has a lot of songs before "The Album". These songs were released in 4 "albums" and 1 single. These "albums" should be correctly called EPs (Extended Plays) containing 2 to 5 songs. That's why this album, released in 10/2020, is called "Album", having 8 tracts. The first 5 songs, released between 08/08/2016 and 06/22/17, are best described as introductory ; are of different styles or genres, as if to tell the world that "BlackPink" talents are versatile, that these 4 ladies and their main composer/music producer Teddy Park, are capable of making musics of any genres. They are (1) "Boombayah" & (2) "Whistle", of EP "Square One" and they are completely different from each other ("Whistle" remains one of my all times BP favorites). The next two: (3) "Playing with Fire" & (4) "Stay", of EP "Square Two", completely different from each other, esp. "Stay" which is in common of 1 other PB song, and is180 degrees from the rest of their discography. Then come the single "As If It Is Your Last" on 06/22/2018: summer and girly vibe, the last of the "introductory" songs. Then on 06/15/18, came THE big one "Ddu-du Ddu-du" with the EP "Square Up" (4 songs). This the song [and its music video (1.9 billions KZbin views so far), that launch "BlackPink" on its path to international recognition. After this, the organizer of the Coachella Music Festival came to S. Korea to invite the group to perform at its 2019 festival (you needs to react to these live performances). On 04/05/19, The EP "Kill This Love" and the single of the same name, and its MV were released. I highly recommend that you react to all of their MVs, but if you have to pick only one, this is the one. Then in 2020, came "The Album", with the single [and its MV] "How You Like That" pre-released on 06/26/20, "Ice Cream" on 08/28/20, and finally the title tract "Lovesick Girls" on 10/02/20 (together with "The Album"). Then later, we could get to other stuffs: the individual members' solo projects, their covers of other [Western] artists. BlackPink MVs are famously uniquely really good, gathering hundred of millions to 1+ billion YT each, and you miss a lot not to react to them. But these tend to overshadow their live on-tour performances (as opposed to live TV stage ones), esp. those of their 2 world tours (2018 - 2020), where their true talents could be appreciated. We Blinks fondly call him the 5th member of Blackpink as his music is weaved in Blackpink music 😁🖤💗 Plus, Teddy is a mentor to the Pinks and a friend to each of them. Not sure if you read the Korean translations or not for "You Never Know", but Lisa sums up the song quite well for me "I'm afraid to find myself expecting people to know me." In part i think this song is about them struggling with their fame and no longer living the life they used to before this. Regarding my comment that the MVs are so much more impactful than the songs, when you watch How You Like consider this, one of the things that Western reactors often overlook is the significant depth and symbolism that has been woven into this MV. You should view the KZbin Video "British Priest Reacts to How You Like That" where a Cambridge University (yep, the one in England) graduate in Greek Classism goes scene by scene explaining the symbolism, basically having to do with female empowerment and overcoming male subjugation and oppression. Each member represents a different Greek Goddess and daughter of Zeus that overcame horrible trials and tribulations. For example, when Rose is being lowered on a bed of flowers she is channeling Persephone, who was kidnapped while picking flowers and dragged to hell and forced to marry Hades. Near the end of the MV Rose is depicted in front of the wings statute (actually Nike, the statute of Triumph) saying you should have killed me when you had the chance because now she has become a winged avenger. Her 3 other members are also posed in front of the Nike statute, showing how they have transformed from powerless victims at the beginning of the MV into powerful avengers, the Erinyes also known as the Furies, female chthonic deities of vengeance in ancient Greek religion and mythology. There are at least 4 other KZbin videos going in depth explaining the symbolism in this video. Once you get to Kill This Love go view "British Priest Reacts to Kill This Love" where they discuss how Freudian psychology is being depicted and reflected in the struggles between the various sides of each member's psyche (Id, Ego, and SuperEgo) in the context of a toxic love affair. At least these 2 MV's are not just pretty girls surrounded by pretty scenes and cool beats. BP is always messaging in their MVs.
