I didn't know how she'd pull off Whitney after seeing JUST the first trailer for the BB Story, but I gave it some faith just because they did so well with the NE Story last year. I figured if they were able to choose the cast that did so amazing in that film, why would they NOT be able to do the same for this film made by the same producers/creators? After watching this video, I really do feel like she'll do Whitney justice. It's not always about being a 100% duplicate in terms of how you look compared to the person you're portraying. It matters if you BECOME the person you're portraying in things like body language, speech pattern, etc. I'll still give her performance a chance :) Though I still just see Janay from The Game haha

The problem is that Hollywood often chooses ambigous looking women to play icons who solely identify as African American. It's an injustice to the icon, the black actresses who need employment, and the fans who view the icon as a reflection of themselves. A black woman, like Whitney, does not have the luxury of being ambiguous or passing for anything other than black. Many of the chosen actresses in Hollywood do, which is problematic when black icons are (mis)represented.

Gabrielle is a lovely person, and I'm sure she is a fine actress... but Whitney's appearance was a key part of her career. Her looks and vocal style were so "white-friendly" that black audiences booed her for awhile. It was visually striking to see this black Barbie Doll standing with the darkskin, gapped-tooth, black bad-boy. They were both good looking, but Whitney was 100% conventional, while Bobby was 100% unconventional. So, to have Gabrielle...who is beautiful but has very African features...round face, flat wide nose, thick athletic body...play Whitney, who was accused of being barely black...misses a crucial element of their story. I'm wishing this project the best...but this won't be the last movie about their lives.

I think Teyana Taylor would make a good Whitney Houston from what I have seen. She has that confidence and great raspy voice. I think she would be amazing.
