Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke declared on the campaign trail that owners of semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15 shouldn’t "be able to keep them."
O’Rourke, the Democratic nominee, said during two different town halls just days before the Uvalde, Texas, mass school shooting that AR-15s have no place in civilian life.
"I think we are fools to believe anything other than that these weapons of war will continue to be used with greater frequency against our fellow Americans," O’Rourke told a group of veterans during a town hall meeting in Abilene on May 21.
"It’s why I’ve taken the position that I don’t think we should have AR-15s and AK-47s in civilian life," he said. "They belong on a battlefield."
Earlier in the day, during a town hall with veterans in San Angelo, O’Rourke suggested he’s open to confiscation of existing semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15.
"But I don’t think that the people who have them right now in civilian use should be able to keep them," he added.

No other violence is defined by the weapon or instrument used. A "logical" solution to ending "gun violence" is to remove guns. But, it does nothing to stop violence - a human act. In my 30+ years in law enforcement I have never arrested a gun. I've taken guns from people doing bad things, but never arrested a gun. You're right, gun control is a lazy attempt to stop violence - it has never succeeded.

Eh, they are afraid "We the People" will use guns against them because that is EXACTLY what the 2nd Amendment is for, to overthrow a tyrannical government. At no point in the founding of this country was there an intent for a standing army, or police force to be stronger or better armed than the Citizens. There was actually strong argument against having a standing army at all as the intent from the beginning was for citizen soldiers i.e. the National Guard. Unlike Beto-Male, I was one of those people who really did change my mind on guns. At one time, in my late teens (early college years), I leaned left and was in favor of banning pretty much all guns. Then at one point, as I became more conservative, I became okay with handguns and shotguns, but still didn't like AR-15s, AK-47s and ones like that. I don't know if I'd say I was for going around taking people's guns... more for just not making and selling any more of them. But then after seeing home invasions on the rise or crimes where there are multiple attackers and learning that it could take 5-6 bullets to hit your target and actually stop the threat, I understood why people have higher-capacity guns. Now I'm against banning any of those. And it only took a few years for me to do a full 180 from ban most guns to totally fine with ARs and AKs. With some research and a good view of reality, I've come a long way.

Im from Canada, dont forget they are also trying to completely ban airsoft regulating them stricter than real guns. All in response to a shooting in a different country. One of the main supporting organizations called them "gateway guns" and said their end goal is a total ban on civillian ownership of guns. Here in Canada we have no right to self defense, people have gone to prison for killing home invaders with the weapon they took from the home invader. I got kidnapped and carjacked and had the police laugh at me and do nothing. Those guys had guns but the police didnt care. I really wish it was possible for me to move to the US or the Czech Republic.

@@762x69 I had a situation around when I was 20 where a friend I trusted very much created a situation that lead to a cz91 (my dream gun for many years a real czech produced import) being stolen from me. I called the cops as soon as it happened in a desperate attempt to get the gun back as I had no idea what could happen and it was registered to me. They didnt take it seriously and instead sent 3 officers to my house to suspend my license and take the other few guns I had. Because I admitted to having ammo in the same case as the gun because I wanted the police to take the situation seriously I got charged with "posession of a restricted firearm with readily accessible ammunition" the same charge someone carrying a loaded illegal gun in their car would get. At the time I was facing a 3 year mandatory minimum. The stress from the court case, finding out my best friend created the situation, losing everything, maybe going to jail etc hit me really hard and combined with some other unresolved issues lead me down the path to drugs. About 6 years later after getting probation for the gun thing which very likely may not have had an equivalent charge in the us I got stopped by the police driving a car that someone was paying me in heroin to drive them around to make sales. I was basically homeless and insanely desperate. I had a good talk with the officer and for whatever reason it got through to me they said they had zero interest in charging me especially since all the drugs were found on the other person. I got clean days later and about a year later and 1 month from the end of the statue of limitations and about to graduate automotive school the prosecutor came after me for drug trafficking. A young lawyer helped me at a really fair rate and the judge was very fair and intelligent. The trial was a year later and I had 2 years of clean urine and letters from school and my work but the prosecutor refused to drop the charges and wanted a year and a half in jail to "send a message". I got off with a year and a half probation (someone in my city whos killed 2 people just went in for their over tenth probation violation after doing a break and enter and only got a year probation) I didnt have it in me to try and fight it as hard as I could have and just plead guilty and asked for pity basically. Canadian pardons arent worth the paper they are printed on and for years the police harassed me because I have the same charge a gangster with an illegal gun in their car would get. Combine that with posession for purpose of trafficking and I look like a hardened criminal when I was only in my 20s.

I spent 30yrs in the military. There is one thing that I noticed early in my career. There were certain people that didn't want to follow the regulations/policies. Always challenging directives, or undermining missions to prove their point. However, whenever these same people were in charge they Damn sure made you do what they said, even if it was against regulations. As a young leader I quickly realized these people were democrats. It was at times, fascinating to watch. They never met each other before but acted exactly the same way. Almost as if it was a DNA strain picked up in some kind of Darwin's evolutionary science fiction. I can also tell you these leaders made everyone miserable, their missions generally failed, and they always lied or blamed someone else, and a good subordinate leader ruined. I’m disabled been through a great deal medically. Can’t feel my hands & more due to severe nerve damage. Had a family member about 10 years ago say I couldn’t fire a firearm. After shooting his after that to prove a point I also found a new passion and outlet. Now I own a large number of firearms including 10 ARs. I can’t fight or run and owning a firearm helps even the playing field. I have zero desire to ever hurt anyone but I will do everything possible to defend myself, my family & anyone around me. The biggest problem with firearms in my opinion is educating people on not just firearms but the laws that are currently on the books and the laws politicians continue to push. I was not raised around firearms so I can tell you from experience and lack of experience on how little people understand when it comes to firearms & the laws currently in place. 2020 I had many friends & family asking for firearms. I'm truly sick and tired, not only of these kinds of infringements on the rights of good citizens in our country, but the carve outs and exceptions given to their "muscle"!! The law enforcement officers whose salaries tax payers pay for but who answer to politicians?!??! Last I checked, they are not military, but CIVILIANS also! As such, they are subject to all the same laws, taxes etc as anyone else. They are hired, and can be fired like anyone else. They go home after work and buy groceries like everyone else. they can be arrested for commiting a crime and some have! In theory, they can get a ticket for speeding and have to face a judge for a DUI just like anyone else. So why do they get exemptions that allow them to protect themselves when not working and shopping at a mall the rest of the population doesn't get? why do they get to have their own 30 round AR and "high capacity" pistol magazines where everyone else is banned from owning them? They can't use them on duty! They are exempt from gun laws on and off work and they are issued their guns they use for duty, they don't have to buy their own guns for work. What gives?!?!?!

He will not stop with ar15's. I have weapons that are far scarier than that. I have friends that can't believe the rifle that sits on my mantle is capable of striking a 6 foot target at 2000+ yards. They wonder why I need it. I just tell them it's not about need. It's because I can. It's all about my gun control. Your ability to hit your target. Out of all my weapons I only own one ar15. It's not my go to gun for self defense. So Beto don't tell me what I can or cannot have. Best thing he can do is hide out in his bunker with Sleepy Joe!

@mel warson sorry Mel nothing so dramatic. I found over the years shooting competently to get better accuracy I needed to reload my own ammo. With the high cost of factory ammo I could produce better ammo at less expense. Today's factory ammo has greatly improved. The 6.6 PRC I shoot costs three to four times per round than a year ago. If you can even find it. Thus reloading is the answer. I also can recreate an accurate load consistently. I was in ordinance in the army during the Vietnam War. And often found factory ammo was consistently different. Of course with a standard m16A1 you didn't need to be. Once the military switched to ball ammo the failures were commonplace. People liked to believe it was because of dirty gas tubes and upper relievers. It was the ammo that caused the fowling.

What I think is amusing is that the latest crop of gun control 'enthusiasm' comes at a time when the State has demonstrated not only State-sponsored political persecution, supporting selective ideological intimidation by mobs, and an abject inability to defend the lives of the law-abiding. There are a LOT of moderates and folks in blue states who've recently purchased firearms in response to skyrocketing crime and civil intimidation, both supported by State inaction or action. That politicrats think people will blithely give up their hard-won ironmongery in such circumstances tells us that they are entirely disconnected from the reality of Main Street and only care about pandering to emotions for donations and votes.

I love that he gets in the plug for how dangerous a round the AR shoots too. 'Cause you know it's some how magically more powerful than larger rounds with MUCH greater energy.
