This is almost a perfect response. As a service member myself I have never felt insulted or disrespected by people who are 1) exercising there first amendment rights and 2) having a PEACEFUL protest. If anything I would be more insulting if people didn't exercise those very freedoms that I protect when they feel the need to. Protection of the freedoms of speech, protest, religion, and self fulfillment are truly what makes our country amazing and separates it from others. They are part of the reason why I felt the need to answer the call to serve almost three years ago. Because yes I too can "think of nothing more American then to peacefully stand up, or take a knee, for your rights anytime, anywhere, anyplace." Huah!

Humm it sounds to me that you have a problem with the people who are kneeling and no the act of kneeling itself. To that matter what does it matter how affluent or not a person is when they are exercising the rights that I get up every day and protect? Why should it matter the size of someone wallet? Would you consider Rosa Parks, John Lewis, MLK, Septima Poinsette Clark, Daisy Bates, Al Sharpton, and so many others heroes? Because each one of those people started with a small action that gradually increased in size and scope. As someone who does carry a rifle and wear body armor I am happy to see people expertise there full rights, because that is the reason that I serve.

Now look for the fact, that even less of that percentage are men, who are usually who get shot, and it's a very appalling rate, compared to the rest of the populous who have been shot. You know how many cops died from being shot, or by a citizen? Go look up those stats, and make sure to watch for the police data, which often adds heart attacks(health problems), accidents(car, or otherwise), or suicides, which are how most police die. The job isn't so dangerous, as to shoot unarmed citizens, just because one is scared, and poorly trained.

When athletes take a knee from the NFL in London but stand for the UK anthem, why are they standing for their anthem? Because they don’t want to insult or offend them. He Nailed it! He covered the primary purpose of kneeling as concisely as I've heard it! For myself, the initial reaction was irritation at the attention towards it was a team issue. Football being a team sport made Kap look like a ME. HOWEVER, I came about quickly to the other side of the coin. If Trump expresses disdain for it...it must have some merit to it. I forced myself to look deeper and find my anti-trump reason to support the Knee. It's a no brainier and any team owners that allow Trump to meld their policies (collective bargaining agreement in place doesn't state that this will be thrust willy-nilly into their contracts. And I'm fairly sure any court would knock down implementatiom of suspensions. Remember, only the president and VP have disrespected the troops, flag, country, etc... By being foul hypocrites with full shame, no remorse or PARDON will be ground into the wheels of Justice, justice that they chose! It's not over but the turniquet is being put in place.

Great points made here. Particularly when Beto rightfully draws a parallel between those vets (white and black) who admirably fought for our country and the rights it gives us as Americans, and those in the civil rights movement who also fought for the rights of their community. They did so not in wars on foreign soil while carrying weapons, but in this country via non-violent protest - which is the exact same thing these players are doing today. They fought in cities like Montgomery, Selma, Birmingham, Atlanta and throughout the South, even though those trying to keep those rights from them (like the police, the klan, the government, or just mobs of angry white folks) often had and used guns, knives, bats or ropes to help them do so. Those who stared down the face of such hate, anger and violence and continued to peacefully protest because it was right and it was their right, deserve just as much admiration and thanks as those who served and still serve today.

When I tell my kids they need to do better, it is not because I don’t love them, it is because I do, and I want them to reach their potential to be awesome human beings. That’s how it is when loyal, patriotic Americans say “America, you are not living up to your ideals of equality; you need to do better.” It’s not that we don’t love America, we just want it to live up to its own potential - to live up to its own defining ideals, like racial equality and the right of ALL Americans to be safe going about their day-to-day business as long as they are doing no harm to others. Americans who peacefully protest are not disrespecting America or those who have put their lives on the line defending it. They are celebrating one of the great things about America: the fact that we can publicly say we disagree with those in positions of power, or that we think the government needs to do better, without being jailed for it. That’s a big part of what makes America special, and worth fighting and dying for. Exercising the quintessential American right of free speech to tell America we know it can do better is an act of love. Seriously, how can people act like it is unpatriotic to exercise one of our nation’s defining rights?
