Texas Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke is hoping to defeat Sen. Ted Cruz - and end a 30-year streak of statewide losses for his party - by taking his grassroots-driven campaign to every single one of Texas’ 254 counties, including the deep-red ones that Democrats have ignored for decades.
“I don't know if I'm going to win more votes than the last Democrat who ran in those counties, but I know that not enough Democrats have been showing up in those counties in the first place,” he told VICE News in an interview on the road in the middle of a seven-stop day on the campaign trail last month.
“And they haven't been reflecting the needs of those counties in what they say on the campaign trail.”
But for all he says he’s looking to reflect the needs of those voters, when he visits seven Republican-leaning rural counties across West Texas on a Saturday in February, he doesn’t moderate his liberal profile on a range of issues. During a stop in Brown County - which voted for Trump by 86 percent - he touts his support for an assault weapons ban. In Parker County, where Trump won 82 percent of the vote, he’s unapologetically pro-choice.
Running as a liberal is a tough task in a state Republicans have won statewide every election cycle since 1994.
But Texas’ demographic shifts - towards a younger, more diverse electorate - suggest it’s just a matter of time until Democrats take back the state. And O’Rourke believes the grassroots energy behind his campaign - which has helped him outraise Cruz over the past four months of the race - coupled with frustration among Republicans with Cruz and Trump’s performance in office could make this cycle different for Democrats.
“I think there's some energy around the things that we're concerned about - this idea that we build a wall...this incitement of fear about Muslims,” he said.
But O’Rourke added: “There's a lot more energy-I think you saw it tonight around the things that people want to do, that they're excited for,” like raising the minimum wage and passing immigration reform.

Yes FELLOW CITIZENS who care about what is going on in Texas, too. As opposed to the contributions of very, very few very rich individuals (from Texas doing biz in Texas or not and plenty from outside) who try to BUY elections. The Texan representatives vote MOST OF THE TIME on matters that concern ALL of the U.S. . I do not find it unethical if _regular CITIZENS_ from other States want to help out this campaign and give their MODEST CONTRIBUTION. And the Ted Cruz campaign can try to activiate such grassroots support from other states as well (but they will not get it, they chase the Big Money. The same corporate donors that ALSO finance the Corporate Dems btw) It reflects the will of the people. (For instance that he runs w/o Super pacs, or gun control, or allowing abortions, or healthcare)

You don't remember George Bush leaving out the back door of the white house with 3 wars on the credit card, the banks failing en mass, the Savings and loan debacle, the automotive industry bail out, millions of people losing their homes and money, the country on the precipice of a complete depression ? No one whether Republican or Democrat believed Obama could prevent a depression. That he did was just short of a miracle. The very people Trump derided Hillary for even speaking to at Goldman Sachs sit in Trump's cabinet. This is the United States of Amnesia. James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence for 7 years is saying Donald Trump is only in power because another country illegally installed him. This is the biggest story in the history of the United States. Four former Trump advisers, 13 Russian nationals, three Russian companies, one California man, and one London-based lawyer are under investigation and of these people (including three former Trump aides) have already pleaded guilty.

julio velez Perhaps because insults aside, you have to work together to achieve a political goal despite personal differences? If you were in a war, and your comrade called you and your family scumbags...and you were in enemy territory, would you brawl with the man and give away your position? Or let it go and follow your orders? A drastic analogy. But same point What you call spineless I call admirable. This man had every reason to fight him, but personal hatred aside, he worked with him and not against him; because the vision of the future outweighs the vision of the present. you salute the rank. Not the man. That is discipline. Being a leader requires that discipline and patience

@maybebabyny 6 жыл бұрын
dostoyevesky12 it signaled the beginning of the end although Carter did barely win in 76. I was more so referring to the local political scene statewide. I don't consider the specific history of the Democratic party in the state as fully allied with the Dixiecrats as much as being historically allied with the New Deal movement. Most people would find it shocking that Humphrey carried the state in 1968. My general point is that I think Texas may be poised to recapture its Democratic roots.
@dostoyevesky12
@dostoyevesky12 6 жыл бұрын
I think Texas has had a few outliers which is normal for most states. In 76 Carter won because Ford was very unpopular after Watergate and pardoning Nixon. Also Carter was a Southerner. Ford and Nixon were presiding over Vietnam and one of the worst economies in U.S. history. Ever since Texas' independence from Mexico they have been consistently opposed to a centralized government. I consider Texas to always have been conservative. I think the great depression was a backlash and also helped get in LBJ who later got Humphrey elected. I truly beleive Texas to always have been a conservative anti-big goverment state with a few outliers. I think "Beto" is a truly insidious individual who must be stopped. Please research him and how he used emminent domain to benifit himself and his step father in an emmiennt domain deal.
@maybebabyny
@maybebabyny 6 жыл бұрын
dostoyevesky12 I will look into Beto but at this point know nothing about him. I am a little shocked considering his arrest record. Texans don't normally have a lot of tolerance for that. My only disagreement with what you said regarding big government is how strong Texas came out for the New Deal. The State was decimated by the depression and what Roosevelt did to put food on the table went a long way toward cementing that support.

Speaking as a life long Texan, O'Rourke would be most welcome here. And it's not because I want Texas to become a blue state. I would rather it be a purple state to be honest. Even though I despise everything the Republicans stand for at the moment. I don't think it will always be that way. Parties change over time. And I want to get out of this cycle of IT MUST BE RED or IT MUST BE BLUE. I want my fellow Texans to take each candidate into consideration. And then choose the one they feel best represents their concerns. Maybe that is a Democrat. Maybe it will be a Republican. Maybe a Socialist Democrat. Maybe an independent. And this goes for the rest of the country as well. We need to break free from tribal politics because it is destroying America right now. We can no longer afford to have another President who is in office simply because they were "on our team so I will vote and support them no matter what". We can't have that continue to happen.

I like his personality, but just for the fact that he would vote to abolish ICE, he's leans towards open borders, he's pro-choice, he's really not a constitutionalist, and he's admitted that he would vote to impeach Trump, I would not vote for him. Don't get me wrong...Donald is an asshole...but he is the asshole the US needs to fatten the pig economically so to speak in order to enable another quasi-socialist administration to take over in 2024. Beto would be a good candidate in the future (from an economic standpoint, the two platform types have to be cyclical for the country to work). At the end of the day, the country needs to run red, so put your feelings aside and vote with logic and common sense.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 5 жыл бұрын
C Webb I continue to hear this same old tale about how Democrats are for totally open borders. Yet I challenge you to find me one Democrat you has ever stated such a thing. Beto is for immigration reform. He wants to change or get rid of many of the SOPs of ICE. Such as the separating of families. Beto is pro-choice. It is what it is. It's unfortunate that one could have a candidate that they agree with on 99% of what they stand for. But if that one thing is the issue of pro-choice or pro-life, then this one thing will change their entire vote. (Im speaking in generalities here) This last part here is the part that vexes me and annoys the hell out of me. That one could see that Trump is a bad person. He lies constantly. He makes sexist comments. He teeters the line on being a racist. He calls other adults names like a 5th grader. He is not very well read or a good speaker.......etc etc Yet despite all that, WE MUST HAVE HIM AS PRESIDENT TO BOOSTER OUR ECONOMY. I just don't get this. Trump is not some sort of economic mastermind. I guarantee that you could find many people that could do what Trump can do economically while at the same time NOT LYING EVERY DAY! They can do those things while not being a total ass. Now I will debate the fact about how much a President should be getting actual credit for the economic growth (or a failing economy). I think there are so many other factors that go into a complex economic system that effect our growth that has nothing to do with the President. But this is another argument for another day. I think Trump's attacks on our justice system are horrid. The idea that Trump actually believes the DOJ is somehow Trump's personal body guards that he can call on to protect him from investigations or protect other party politicians is deeply frightening. These things alone may warrant impeachment. However I would like to see the end of this Russian investigation. And I want it to be done completely and thoroughly until Mueller believes that he is now finished. Trump and congress needs to stay the hell out of it. PERIOD. After when this is done, then we can truly discuss impeachment IF IT IS DEEMED NECESSARY due to the findings of the investigation.
@cwebbhouston

jeremybr2020 -Democrats mask their support for open borders by using policies such as asylum laws as a verbal loophole. Immigration attorneys such as those based out of McAllen, Tx will tell you that the first sentence out of the mouths of those who cross the border is “ I feel that my life or myself and my family’s lives are in danger and that we seek asylum in the United States.” Separation of children…don’t get me started. Let’s just say I frequent the valley quite often and I have seen these false claims of child concentration camps. Most of them are churches, and if you drive by you will see them outside playing soccer. They get three square meals a day and sleeping conditions are just fine. Ask any local in the valley. The photos you see in the media are over-flow holding areas and some of them are from three administrations back. Some families are legit, however some cross using children that are not theirs as a vessel. The entire system is overwhelmed and there are not enough facilities and man power to handle the volume. I was talking to one the guys cleaning my catch this past weekend who told me that most of them end up staying the US and migrating north. Good question...why is it that no another "economic mastermind" stepped up to challenge the other politicians in this last election? Why is it that the US is the only country in the world where people become politicians and get rich, and how do they get rich? (rhetorical question). The president is already wealthy and branded...why would he need more of both? Is he that narcissistic? Why is there this historical resistance against the president? I get the feeling that some folks (with more money than you and I could ever fathom) lost control & $$$...and they are pissed, and I'm not just talking nationally, I'm talking globally. I think reactions speak louder that words sometimes and if you take what is going on overseas, you can almost see a common thread. So it boils down to one simple question...are you a nationalist or a globalist?...I think it's that simple. A president should only get credit for appointing the fed chairman. You can put our inflation on Bernake and Yellen's monetary policies. This last wealth effect was nothing but stimulus packages and bond buying programs...operation twist or whatever they called it. IMHO it will not end well.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 5 жыл бұрын
C Webb Well there is a lot to unpack after reading that. And unfortunately I have to go to work. However I will try to address a few things. I'm not sure how or why you equate the asylum laws to somehow mean that Democrats desire open borders. That is quite the jump there. It is unfortunate that there may be a few that abuse the system as far as using children thats not their own....etc. But if you think that most of these people are not escaping horrible environments that we here in the states couldn't possibly fathom, then you aren't paying attention. You know where else you can get 3 squares a day and fine sleeping conditions? Prison. Yet I would bet that you and most other people would not be content to stay at a place like that if you could help it. And I don't give a rats ass if it is a church or any other nice facility. Taking kids from the parents and transporting the kids thousands of miles across several states and then making it extremely difficult if not impossible to locate the children is fucking wrong. "The president is already wealthy and branded...why would he need more of both?" Holy shit did those words actually just come from you or was that a typo? Are you kidding me with that shit?! Do you honestly think it's only the poor who try and steal money?? No rich person would because they are already rich???? That is the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. And again, if you're not seeing this constant needing of acceptance and praise by Trump on an almost daily basis, then you aren't paying attention. Trump is constantly needing this kind of support. Why the hell do you think he starting campaigning only months after getting elected??!! Something no other President as far as I know, has ever done. He constantly needs the crowds to be cheering his name and repeating the same old shit of "Lock her up!" and "Build that wall". It's pathetic and embarrassing. The only thing that could top the stupidity of that statement above is this one "Is he that narcissistic?" My god man (the man thing is an assumption. If you're female, I apologize) how can you ask such a question? That is laughably ignorant on a level that is astonishing. And Im not sure why those rich people would be so pissed seeing how the big tax cut by Trump benefits them so much. But anyways I got to go to work. Is he that narcissistic? LOLOL You got to be kidding. lol

Bear Arms Nope. It’s my right to bear. But I do believe that there are things we can and should do to mitigate guns getting into the wrong hands. Otherwise, look at how divided it makes us when I think we can all agree that more can be done to reduce gun violence. That’s so unfortunate to me, because I believe there’s likely more that unites us than divides us. The calls from anti-gun Americans - are different than common sense gun law advocate Americans - are different from the Americans who rail against ANY restriction on gun ownership. There is undoubtedly common ground in there to find, that we can (mostly) all agree to allow compromise, that diminishes the fanatics on either side, and save some lives without taking away our constitutional rights.

I do. He's my senator, and I have been paying attention to everything he does and says, and he has proven to be nothing but a selfish, lying sleaze-ball who puts his own extreme ideology over country, like when he led the shutdown of the entire government in 2013 to try to kill Obamacare, an effort that had zero chance of passing. Quit assuming you know me, guy from Italy.

I honestly haven't been following the Senate election at all, but I've read about this guy. He seems pretty cool. He was even in a band with Cedric Bexler-Zavala (of At the Drive In and The Mars Volta fame). I've seen his name pop up so many times on my Twitter timeline, which I ignored for as long as I could until I just gave in. Despite the fact that it's a midterm year, he's actually motivated me to get out and vote. Sure, things aren't looking great for him right now, but I seriously wish him the best. Whether not or not he wins his Senate race, I'd like to see him run for president in 2020. He's young, charismatic, doesn't take money from corporations, and he even speaks Spanish.

I look forward to viewing this material, but have this immediate response to its title. I've spent a fair amount of time listening to Beto in several town hall contexts, and working for his campaign and with his campaign workers. I'd say it's a mistake to say Beto O'Rourke is running for the Senate to 'take down Ted Cruz.' That's very unlike the spirit of his motivation and his message; he's in this campaign to replace Ted Cruz and the politics Cruz embodies; and in that effort, he has been remarkably consistent in avoiding 'taking down' or putting down Cruz. The campaign is profoundly more positive than this headline suggests (in my opinion).
