So yes, this is an excellent edition of betryal at house on the hill. With tighter rules, nice components, and new scenarios. But it is still betrayal, and if you didnt like the other games in the series or earlier editions, then yeah, you might as well keep going. It's essence is the same. Which i think is a good thing, betrayal has its niche and i like that the new edition is just an iterative improvement and not an attempt to make the game into something it isn't

It also adopted some of the new changes that came about from the side releases between 2nd and 3rd, including a rule where the traitor can refuse the call and another player can turn traitor instead. Sometimes it's just difficult to turn into a badguy arbitrarily or sometimes you just hate being 'the one' that always turns traitor. Yeah, you will get those haunts where the balance is obviously in favor of one team or the other, but I see it more as a feature, IMHO

I've played 2nd Edition four times, and while I like this game in concept, it's only made a proper game once of those four? Twice, the survivors won within two turns thanks to the random haunt setup handing them everything needed, and in another one, the villain player got the same quick-win boon. It hasn't left the best impression on me, haha. The one proper game of this was a great time though. Very hectic, with a lot of, "No, fuck you, why are you chasing *me*?" to the gleeful villain player.

Ah, Betrayal. The first designer board game I played back in college which (alongside a few other games) had me convinced that I hated board games for years thereafter.

Betrayal is a game i have really cooled on over the years. Me and my group played this a lot, played the legacy version, and of course got 3E. We played last year, and i lament that hated every second of it. Maybe one day i will be able to enjoy it again. It has a special place in my heart, but i never want to play it again 😂

I've gone the reverse with it. I used to hate it because i took my gaming way more seriously. Now i'm more content to let a game be itself, i can cut betrayal some slack. Because it never really pretends to be anything other than a chaotic dumb mess set in a haunted house.

I see many dislike this one, but it has a special place in my heart. It's easy to get into, has a good atmosphere, and it's fun to build the house and discover new 'stories', which are varied and for the most part do a good job on playing on pop culture tropes. I don't even mind the randomness too much, because it's so lightweight that you can easily play it again and again the same game night. Finally, it's a great game for kids as they have a much stronger ability to immerse themselves in what's happening in the game. If you're a more competitive player, or if you're looking for a game with deeper strategy or whatever, you'll probably be turned off by a game where winning is often decided by random chance, but pretty much everyone I've played it with has found it to be lots of fun.

One of those games you play to have silly fun with friends that I like despite its flaws. It is a bit disappointing that it's an evergreen title that keeps getting reprints and more content without actually addressing any of those flaws or upping the quality of its components. Betrayal Legacy is the best version of this, giving the players a through line to connect with. "A game of one halves" - brilliant, I laughed out loud!

Good quality stuff as always Also a little detail but when it comes to alternatives, I wish you wouldn’t advice what’s basically a reskin of the exact same game (here for example I’d have said « for something more complex and up to 8 players, try The Thing: The board game »

I played way too much of the first edition. Hated how the huants made no sense until we shared each other's book entry. I hope 3rd has better huant rule writers.

The haunt set up is now similar to Scooby Doo and Legacy, where each team gets to read off the introduction and setup before the strategy split starts. Of course, it doesn't do anything for those that don't grok what the other team's end goal is

I have the 2nd ed, only played like 2 times (haven't found a group that really enjoyed this, even when we implemented updated haunted roll rules), while I do enjoy the game, in my current situation, is it wise to get the 3rd ed?

There seems to be a bit of snobbery against this game among "serious" gamers, but I've always found it to be a lot of fun, especially the first edition with the Underground Lake being on the second floor :)

Ha, as i said elsewhere, when i first played it i thought it was awful, but over time I've grown far more tolerant of silly games like this. They do what they set out to do and that's great for them.

This was one of the first board games I played and even then I found the game kinda boring. Until the haunt, it’s essentially just aimlessly wandering the board with no strategy and little interaction.

Tbf, I got this because this game is basically Cabin in the Woods : the board game. That movie is basically all what you said. While Mansion of Madness does provide more theme, interactions and strategy, it lacks that certain "meddling kids... and the dog too" chaotic fun for me.

@@3MBG It's a carry over from Scooby Doo!, where there's 5 episode cards that has 5 haunts each on them. Though, the standard 'omen tile pull' isn't the only way to trigger the haunt in 3rd edition, but it's more rare

2nd edition has a special place in my heart, as this may be the first game that isnt social deduction my group got into. That being said, the rules in 2nd edition are ass, its really hard to show a new player how to play the traitor without potentially being told their objectives, and most scenarios favor Ox Bellows, and even if they didn't, he'd just beat the opposition to death regardless. Im really glad that this game sounds tighter, unfortunately I won't be picking this up till I've crossed off every haunt as played in 2nd 😵.

No they are not. Go to the channel, sort videos by oldest, they have always been this length. This war of mine in about 3 minutes, released on the 2nd day the channel was going was 3:55. The first 6 reviews that i did which were released on week 1 are 3:11, 3:33, 3:37, 3:39, 3:55 and 3:52. Your mind is playing tricks on you. They have always been this way

I still remember the first edition pool error or whatever the tile was called. I remember following this fairly closely so long ago, but it had me wondering how the gameplay goes for the first half, is everyone likely to be stingy with others because of the risk of losing resources to someone who would become the betrayer? Maybe the roleplaying at the start adds to it. I assume the (patched) original game isn't compatible with this version?
@3MBG
@3MBG 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, not compatible without some serious work as the rules have moved a bit.
