Always thought that Bette Davis should have won the Oscar for her powerhouse performance as Margo Channing in the classic, "All About Eve". Everyone in the audience that night must have truly thought, "fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night"!

I (and many others) think Gloria Swanson should have won for Sunset Boulevard. That's what makes it a horse race.

Great actress, yeah. But Joan was right in her estimation of Bette: when she said she was very mannered and cartoony - with the cigarette and eye-rolling. Davis likewise criticized Joan for her crying in films.

I found that after "Baby Jane", Davis's career continued and flourished, Crawford's tanked. The irony is that it was Crawford who convinced Davis to make the movie.
@andressegui1236
@andressegui1236 7 жыл бұрын
Well, it didn’t really tanked, all the movies she did after baby Jane were commercial successes and although some of them were negatively received by critics, Joan’s performance was praised in all of them.

I did hear a story (maybe apocryphal) that Joan Crawford attached weights to herself during baby Jane to make it difficult for Davis to drag her around. I also heard the kicks Davis administers to Crawford in the film were all too real on occasion. In Elizabeth and Essex her character had to slap co star Errol Flynn (who she believed unequal to the part) round the face in a scene, and Davis actually made real contact in so many takes Flynn threatened to slap her right back if she did it again!

Believe it or not, women are very competetive with each other. I work with 5 women in my office. They will back stab or gossip behind your back. When I got promoted, they all got very jealous. They spent most of their days giving me dirty looks.They hated me that much. But I don't care. I won.

Despite the hatchet job Warners did on the novel “Beyond the Forest”, Bette gives the selfish, dissatisfied character great pathos and sympathy. Not nearly as bad as it’s been painted.

It is generally acknowledged that Joan was excellent in both Humoresque and in Possessed. Everything I have ever read about Bette states that she was also perfectionist. And why do you excuse her and not Crawford for raising an ungrateful daughter ? Bette also drank...and smoked like a chimney and though not "masculine " looking she was also a caricature of herself in later life. It may sound like I'm anti Bette but I'm not. I'm just tired of Joan bashing.
@robinromine8158

I understand that you are tired of Joan bashing and that is why you Betty bashed, however you just bashed Betty because so many people were bashing Joan. You don't really have the right to criticize someone when you are doing the same thing, but for revenge. And throwing Betty's dirty laundry out on social media for everyone to see shows your character.

They were supposed to be in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte together but Joan got sick so Olivia De Havilland took the part over. Bette slept with Franchot Tone who was Joan's fiancé during the filming of Dangerous so their feud started early. Even before Joan went to Warner Bros.

Better and Joan should of worked together from the beginning, specially against each other like they done on "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? Them working together from the beginning would of drew a lot of viewers attention sense they were both fierce, young and attractive at the time. Then they probably would of grew on learning to like each other.

Give me Crawford ANY day! Not only could she act; she could sing and dance too - and she was famous long before Davis got to Hollywood. Sure there was a massive rivalry. Crawford stole Tone off Davis and, personally, I think Davis was jealous of Crawford's looks and her sex appeal. She married 3 hot guys: Fairbanks, Tone and Terry. Bedded Gable and a lot of other hot men and popularised nailpolish, shoulder pads, glasses on women and more. She should've got that 2nd Oscar!
@TheRmjr

Are you saying because she couldn’t stay married to one man and slept with all the others you listed, this is why she should have gotten a second Oscar? No way...

Why do they talk about Beyond the Forest, and show footage from The Star? Makes me think gossip, not fact
@TheRmjr
@TheRmjr 3 жыл бұрын
Because they are both Davis films. Beyond the Forest is the last one Davis did before leaving Warner Bros in 1949. The Star is loosely based on Joan Crawford’s life and Davis plays Margaret Elliott. These films were mentioned and discussed in this documentary.

lol, and you're qualified to comment on her love for her daughter? Were you there? Both ladies were reportedly alcoholic and neither had a lot of success with any one man but put in context, Crawford was considered the beauty and Davis the character actress.

Crawford always appeared very masculine to me. Her brows grew heavier and heavier. And darker as she reddened her hair. She was also an alcoholic. She was good only in Mildred Pierce, and Baby Jane. She was a perfectionist. Davis was natural. She was always feminine, but her strong personality was not meant for marriage. Her love for her only daughter was almost reverant. Yet B.D had to write her outlandish book, instead of appreciation for her luxurious life. How Sad.

Baby Jane is not a 'camp' film. Only homosexuals would think that about this film. In this little production you see a lot of gay commentors who keep harping on about how these two women were 'fighters' and 'didn't fit the mold'. That is just homosexuals projecting. Bette Davis did fight for better roles but she was never an outsider in the way that homosexuals were and continue to be. As for Joan, well, her problem was that she was never an actress, but was always a MOVIE Star. Coming from dirt poor roots she got caught up in the IDEA of glamor and at first she married into it, but later she PROJECTED it--just as these homosexuals projected their problems onto these two women. You know, a better documentary on these two would be one that focused on how these two women were the embodiments of the America Dream. Coming from poor (by comparison to what they achieved) backgrounds and rising through hard work and determination. Even though they both portrayed a lot of VICTIMS throughout their careers, their personal lives were not those of victims. Today's youth could learn more using these two women as examples of the American Dream and how to achieve it, than watching Joan's movie roles where she goes from pillar to post looking for 'a kind stranger' who will 'help' her.
