Interviewed by David Hartman on April 7th, 1981, just as "Bette Davis Eyes" was making its way to the #1 position on the Billboard chart, where it would spend nine weeks before winning Grammys for "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year" and become the biggest hit of 1981.
Thank you to the eBay seller/Bette Davis fan who ten years ago provided my father with rare Bette Davis interviews that became my best Christmas gift of 1999.
In commemoration of twenty years since the passing of America's finest screen actor and one of our greatest stars and human beings.
WE LOVE YOU MISS DAVIS!!!!!!!!!

She has to be given credit for all of the pearls of wisdom that she always added to an interview.

'Claude Rains had a marvelous description of acting and what his method was. He said: ''I learn the lines and pray to God''. Ha,

It is so sad that she wanted to be respected and missed by her children and she assumed she wouldn't be around to know if that came to pass. BUT, she did live long enough to see this concerning her daughter BD. Of all her children she adored BD the most. She called her the love of her life. I cannot imagine her anguish when BD published that nasty book. So sad. So very sad.

@truvelocity Yep, she felt that she needed to make herself look "as horrible as possible" as Jane because she believed that's what the script called for. Again I'm in so much awe of her for really studying a script and finding out just what sort of a character she was portaying. Who does that these days?

Her oldest daughter wrote a nasty book about her when she had a massive stroke. Thinking all hope was gone, she published the nasty book-but Bette didn't die and came out of the coma to find out! They never spoke again. It was called "My Mother's Keeper" by BD Hyman

Oh gosh, it is so sad. I don't wanna say because I admire Bette that she had to be a great mother, but these things should be held, definitely not publish it as a book. How were the two other kids with her?

@jhecht424 She did the makeup herself? She was creative in that way, too? I'm so impressed.

Yes, this is difficult for a working mother back in her time. Kids really didn't respect their mother's for their work, because there was an emotional disconnect. Women deserved the same respect that men got for working constantly, but they never really got that. I sure hope times will change when my daughters work.

Regarding the bit on Baby Jane, Bette did the makeup herself, because she wanted to look as horrible as possible, as she put it "like Mary Pickford in ruin". THAT my friends is an actor/actress...Someone who can read a script and really dig deep to discover what kind of a person their character is.
