This is a style of mid-century entertainment I adore. It is what I call a "teleplay" because it is self-contained in one episode and has lots of pregnant pauses and moments of extended silence which no one does anymore in tv series. It has a quality which was inspired by soap operas and telenovellas and even westerns of the time. It seems America in the 50s was still a wild-west frontier, even in the suburbs: long vacuous suburban streets and essentially suburbs were cultural deserts. They did engage excellent studio-era-trained actors like Bette Davis. And it was all FREE! Now we have to pay for Netflix to get something of quality because Free to air is now a wasteland itself of cheaply produced reality shows starring fabulous nobodies. But this teleplay starring Bette Davis is very much a Woman's genre of television and was made for what was then termed "housewives." Housewives in those days watched soap after soap during the day inbetween dishwashing soap tv commercials. It has a certain eerie feel to it that I adore!!!! Listen to the "UFO-like" theramin (a Russian invented musical instrument which sounds like a spaceship hovering) sound track around 15:11, I adore that sound!!!!! It's so trippy!!!! They used to use it a lot in women's melodramas, at a time when women were being medicated a lot by ridiculous male doctors who would prescribe Valium to them for the most minor complaint ("you're being hysterical Gladys, take a Valium dear and you'll feel better in the morning!"). So these shows reflect that whacked out broader cultural spaciness and dizzying quality. TV is always an excellent indicator of social mores and attitudes. The western "Big Valley" starring Barbara Stanwyck had a similar feel to it. Years later in the 80s, Dynasty continued this style of television filming with its female-centred plots and sequences of brilliant dialogue, hair-raising drama and pregnant pauses. The action in the woman's telenovella genre usually revolves around a woman's point of view and we see Bette in some wonderful close up shots or staring away dreamily into the distance. She's always captivating when on screen even in such a minor role. She wasn't even old yet by this stage was reduced to doing television. Because she could no longer get feature film parts which is a shame because these days she'd still be working in her 50s and 60s. The sets also had a kind of "Stagey" quality to them. I could go all day, but suffice it to say that this is such an underappreciated and understudied genre in the history of tv and entertainment. Thank you for posting.

When I was a young mother in th 1970's everyone put their babies outside in their prams for some fresh air. Why not? Well wrapped up if it was cold. As I remember they didn't cry then either! Too many interesting shadows and clouds passing over, trees and plants swaying etc, and of course, no nasty evil messed-up-by-modern-life people everywhere. Just sweet old ladies cooing over them as they passed.

I have traced my people as far back as the 1100's!! (Genealogy research, collaboration etc.) The funny thing is: I had collected as many as 106 Bette Davis Movies etc, (being my Favorite Actress along with Olivia DeHavilland 2nd) and though I loved her work so much,. I didn't know we were related until years later! I am SO GLAD TO HAVE THIS TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION. THANK YOU!

Oddly, a lot of Crawford's and Davis's very best works were their TV movies, illuminating how deeply talented they both were and revealing a deeper well of talent than many people might have thought either ever had !! This short movie itself merited an award on Davis's behalf of some kind !! 😍😍😊😊😀😀😃😃😄😄

It's hard to believe she was only 51 when this was made.

I love Ms. Davis but it also takes a great script to make a great scene , as well as a host of other people. Thank you so much for posting this! I hope to find many more plays soon!

Bette Davis did “100” films. I’ve been so lucky to have watched over 60 of them. I am an actor. This short film demonstrates, there is no part Bette Davis couldn’t masterfully perform to perfection. How did she do it? What makes her so damn compelling
