He went by the name Orry-Kelly. Auatralian-American Oscar winning designer of film costumes. He designed Miss Oberon's stunning costumes for the film. Don't know who designed the hats but I'll bet he had input into the design so that it conveyed the exact look he wanted. He seems to have been very aware of the tiny details that most movie viewers won't notice. Dressmakers and amateur fashion historians are watching like eagles to see details and techniques. Her gowns are exquisite in the film and she wears them beautifully, regally. Even arrogantly. The character knows she's a knockout and carries herself to have the most impact. Vile, calculating thing.

She was average looking imo, but her posture, gait, voice, and speech makes her very attractive and alluring.

She was a British Subject from British India. She was Indian in blood. People don’t realize the India was a British colony for over 400 years. Thats 15 generations of family and friends. Twice as long as the USA has been the USA.

Merle was Anglo Indian and always denied her Indian heritage as Hollywood was racially prejudiced against colored actors
@susanfriend-k5m3 ай бұрын
@@Romeresh-o3h Yes. My grandmother was Anglo Indian and moved to England with my grandfather who was Scottish after the British Raj. My father was 1\4 Indian and my mother British. But we suffered prejudice in the 50s and 60s.My father was quite dark and found it hard to find work. People sometimes forget what mixed blood people went through.
@pearlbrandwein47313 ай бұрын
@@Romeresh-o3hBefore Oberon came to Hollywood, she started in British films for the Korda brothers. There was always prejudice in England, which she faced before Hollywood. Her mother was Indian; Oberon introduced her as her Indian nanny. She hid her Indian background consistently; consequently, she spent a lot of time in the sun always displaying a great tan earning the nickname Acapulco Gold when she was married to womanizing Mexican multi-millionaire Bruno Pagliai. She found true happiness with Dutch actor, Robert Wolders who was with her til her death. Then he became involved with Audrey Hepburn. He was with her til she died.

I'd love to examine her costumes up close. I'm assuming the corsets carried a lot of the weight of those voluminous skirts like they did back then. Wondering if all the underclothes are as authentic as the gowns. There was so much going on under those gowns back then. Layers and layers and layers of fabric. No wonder they were fainting all the time.
