Alfred Hitchcock directed only a handful of episodes and I suspect thismay have been one of them. While I'm not a huge Bette Davis fan, her skill is so expertlydisplayed here. On the surface its just a "rich old widow" part but she grants it so much pathos.Just look at 5:10 when shebrushes his jacket offand then stops at the shoulder to make eye contact, probably imagining her late husband, wishing she could enter into a relationship with this younger man and knowing that it can't be (hence her jealous and bitter reaction at learning he's already taken - bursting the fantasy and prompting her to lash out by denying him fifty dollars to save his fiance's life). While its part of the script that Ms. Fox seems to view Vanessa as the "surrogate girlfriend" to Eddie, this would have gone right over the viewer's head if it wasn't communicated through the performance. Its a shame Bette wasn't granted more parts of this caliber in her later years.

She asked then flat out accused the man Eddie. With her testimony he was convicted and sent to prison. A year later they arrested another man who still had the ring and confessed to attacking her. They let Eddie outbof prison but while he was locked up his girlfriend died. Eddie was given his job back as a doorman and she tried to pay him $500 and justify her mistake instead of apologizing. He later waited in her apartment while she walked her dog and when she returned he strangled her to death. Making sure to leave the money on her body.

6:39 I wonder if the original script had the dog walker asking for money for an abortion for his girl but was bowdlerized for broadcast. It might further explain Bette Davis 's character reluctance to give him money for a procedure that was illegal at the time 1:55 This episode first aired in 1959 so if Davis 's husband died 15 years earlier that means he died during World War II in 1944.
