The scariest and funniest movie musical number ever, Bette Davis shrieks through this one all the way to another Oscar nod in Robert Aldrich's classic "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" co-starring Joan Crawford (of course!) and Victor Buono (Oscar-nominated, too) on the accompaniment.

Bette in this movie was an acting masterpiece and richly deserved the Oscar she didn't get! She had so many ways to convey an emotion especially her EYES; My lord no one could act with her eyes like Bette!

+Mark Whitman How about that scene on the beach when Blanche tells Jane that she didn't do it? Davis takes what seems like an eternity on screen to react, and while the truth is sinking in she gradually shifts her gaze from the upper right quadrant of the frame to Blanche on the lower left. In that one gesture her eyes traverse the great distance between suffering and remission. It is a consummate moment that only Davis could deliver.

David well put and when she descends into her little girl character in the bedroom when Joan is tied up: I want to remember all the good times like going to the beach, good lord I can think of few actresses so convincing!

Mark Boston that damn Joan Crawford went on a campaign against Davis. winning the Oscar she was robbed . actually Joan was very good amazing creepy movie

Mark Boston I think the term camp undermines Davis' performance and the movie. It's in our perverse day and age that we can laugh at a tragic story of a disfunctional family, a film about fame and descent into madness. It was taken way more seriously when it was released.

I totally agree with you. Bette Davis said in an 1989 interview with Barbara Walters that Joan Crawford vehemently went on a crusade to rob Davis of the award for her performance as Baby Jane Hudson. Davis went on to say to Barbara Walters that Joan Crawford was not very smart in doing that. According to Ms. Davis had she had won the Oscar, the film would have made millions more and Joan Crawford would have received a lot more money. I actually believe that Davis was telling the truth because she held that resentment for a long time and Ms. Davis had won other Oscars so it's not like she had never won an Oscar and missed her only chance. I see Bette Davis as a serious actress who is not afraid to say "yes, it was a good role but I've done better" if she didn't perform well. This is why I believe Bette Davis on this particular issue. I do understand that both actresses had personality issues but openly I think Joan was much more insecure and narcissistic than Bette. Bette had strong narcissistic traits but Joan Crawford appeared to have full blown narcissistic personality disorder. Both were great actresses though.

Knowing Victor Bruno's relationship with his mother in this movie (whom he seems to believe is ridiculous) and then having to encounter the likes of Baby Jane Hudson... His expressions while playing the piano really sum up how he feels about the deck of cards fate has handed him. His drunkenness later on shows just how at his wits end he has finally become. Bette Davis could not possibly have played this scene any better, except for when she reenacts the song then takes a good long look in the mirror and screams at the sight she sees which so cruelly vanishes all her drunken delusions. Bruno and Davis both had my sympathy, even though they made me laugh so. What a movie.
