An arrow spinner is an absolute essential for anyone serious about building/maintaining arrows. Having the ability to clearly delineate between great arrows (and not so great) makes it easy to shoot your best in comps and use your trashy ones for recreational purposes. Its right up there with a fletching jig IMO.

I think people really underestimate how handy those spinners are. A pine ridge arrow spinner was one of the first things I bought when I got into archery. I've never once regretted spending $30 for it. Over the course of 3 years now its saved me a lot of money, a lot of headaches, and allowed me to own every single aspect of building my arrows.

Most manufacturers straightness spec is only for a 28" span somewhere in that 32" shaft, thus the importance of spinning them to get a straighter shaft from a lower grade. Black Eagle are the only one I've found that specify their straightness spec for the full length of the shaft. I got a dozen .001 Carnivores and every one spun dead nuts on both ends. I was super happy coming from some noodley Gold Tip XTs. Also square both ends after cutting and make sure your insert spins true before the glue sets!

100% agree I have the carnivores and the carnivore ultra lights 0.03 advised all spun at 0.01 full length weight spot on too. I still bare shaft tune my hunting arrows but I dont really have to , i would love to use a hooter shooter to bare shaft tune and see how that goes.

Excellent video and it confirmed what I thought to be true. I just bought some GT Kinetic Pierce arrows off eBay by mistake. I thought I was getting a great deal only to realize they were not Platinum just regular Pierce so .006 versus .003. I was bummed at first but figured I could probably get them down to .003 or better if I got a spinner and cut some of the wobble out. Plus I am going to match weight all the components too so the variance between arrows is as small as possible. I had a feeling you'd have a video on this and I was correct. Thanks man !!

One of your best videos. It always amazes me that people paper tune fletched arrows. Cart b4 the horse concept. Take the time to make a perfect set of 6 arrows from scratch with blank shafts. Then shoot them @ different targets so u don't wreck them. These r hunting arrows so if u have a bad day then some critter is going to suffer in a lose/lose situation. Thanks for setting the story straight.

I've bought one of these not long ago and it's been the best investment, being able to spin test broadheads and turn the insert so it spins true is awesome, question though have you ever compared a .003 to a .006 straightness arrow and if it actually makes a difference in accuracy, ive just gone to the victory rip tko sport (.006) in a 250 spine and seems to shoot great out to 100m, even robinhooded one at 60m, trying to decide if I go the sports or elites next, but there's such a big price difference cheers

One recommendation. Check that the wheels in the Pine Ridge are rotating true. I had one that you could visibly see one wheel was rotating out of round. This induced wobble of the arrow shafts. I would surmise that wheel was punched for the axle off slightly.

Howdy, nice video. Getting an accurate spinner is difficult. I agree. I like straight arrows and have been on the Gold Tip Hunter Pro arrows for hunting over a decade. Reported straightness at .001. Most 30$ spinners are not accurate enough to identify. 001 out of round or straightness. Make sure the tools are accurate before checking the arrows. That being said, I practice with the cheapest .003 Amazon arrows I can find. I verify and tune my bow sights everything to my hunting setup, G-Tip Hunter Pro's and Swhackers. It hurts less to break a 3$ arrow vs a $15 arrow and a dozen of high quality arrows last year's and years by practicing with cheap arrows. I or someone in my circle robinhoods 3-5 of my arrows a year. So buying cheap arrows saves me money. As a hunter, not a competitor. Is my skill level good enough to know the difference between .003 and .001. I don't think so, but I still buy the .001 when I need to. My 2 cents.

Nate, you always mention having and bell curve arrow. Hoping you can help me. I shoot 27.5 DL at about 65lbs. My maxima 350 with 100 grain (abound 27.25” long) seem to shoot great through paper. They weighed a bit under 400 grains total. Well I went to a FMJ 320 with 75 grain insert and 100 grain broad head to add a little weight. This was recommended by pro shop. Well this arrow seems to tear like crap. Am I out of bell curve with this setup? Or is it some other issue. I just switched to hamskea rest. I swear the qad seemed to paper tune this arrow better as long as it was cock vane down. (No clue why). Got a left tear I can’t fix now. And the rest is at 12/16ths

@timbow50
@timbow50 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, building your own is worth it. An arrow saw is needed. I bought a little mini chop saw ( very small with a 4" blade) from Harbor Freight for like $30. It came with a little tootles blade. By extra a couple of little 4" carbide cut-off wheels they have there. I built a wooden platform etc etc and made my own. Works just as good as a $140+ " factory" one. Been using it a good ten years now. I use the " Helix" vane jig mostly. It's a one at a time jig but it is exactly accurate from gluing vane to vane. It is not adjustable. It's 3 degree right helical. I have also the red plastic Bohning jig. Highly adjustable and various vane clamps can be had. Left or right. You can order shafts, vanes. Inserts, points, bushings, nocks for your custom arrows. You can get brass point inserts like 40 grains and up for nearly every arrow- NEARLY. I prefer Black Eagle products.

Nate, I’ve got a question related to this video I’ve never found an answer to... How is arrow straightness actually measured by manufacturers? Lasers, optics, dial indicators, something else? Is there a standard way of measuring straightness, or at least a common practice in the industry? Is the arrow supported on the ends and runout checked in the center of the arrow? Or is the arrow supported over a shorter span and checked on the ends, similar to what you showed on an arrow spinner? If so, what is that span between supports, because that could vary the results?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 2 жыл бұрын
The industry standard is laser sorted over a 28" span. Although I've found most companies go over the 32" span.

They will bend, no doubt, but it takes a lot to get them to bend and stay bent. The Pine Ridge arrow inspector especially is such a cheap addition to your arrow arsenal it's worth having anyways just to be sure after a nasty encounter with a rock, root, dirt, etc.

I have been bow hunting for about 30 years and a lot has changed over that time with arrow rests particularly as well as almost everything else and for a lot of years I would buy cheap arrows and have been really successful but with the drop away rests how important is arrow straightness seeing that the arrow doesn't stay in contact with the rest very long?

I made one similar to The AJA one and it works well. I used a battery die grinder for portability and have a dust extraction tube I scavenged off a broken router. I use the largest fine cut cutting disc about 1 1/2 in, as it seems to cut straighter and leave a better finish so less work to prepare for inserts. I over engineered mine and it works just as good as the Clubs brought one. Cost was about the same as a brought one , but I couldnt get one at the time due to Covid and I had lots of time to make a good one in Lockdown.

if you shoot a lot, a fletching jig is anyway recommended as you will loose vanes - doesn't need to be a Bitzenburger, there are cheap knock-offs available that work similar. As a arrow saw I use an old Dremel (doesn't have to be a Dremel, there are cheaper knock-off available in the meanwhile, I think Ozito makes similar tools) clamped to a board - works perfectly for me.

@@joshuaduzan3095 you have to consider the TAW, hence it depends what insert and BH you envisage to use. There is a pretty good arrow built app available (Pinwheel) where you can check whether your static spine matches the actual dynamic spine. Entering your data into the app it tells me that you don't have much room to ad a lot of weight to the front - should be o.k. if your insert and your BH weights not more than 125 grain, but I would need the details of your arrow / arrow setup (brand, diameter, GPI....) to run it through the app to be more precise.

It's + or - .001 .003 .006 so that means they can be out .002 .006 or .012 . It's also the amount of static variance in the shaft using a spine tester with a 2lb weight at 28 inches . Overall straightens varries with all manufacturers and the more you pay the straighter they are . It's a great video but that's not what the manufacture means . When a arrow is spine tested at 2lbs 28 inch spand lets say a 350 . It will move the indicator .350 but when it's rotated on the spinner it's spine can fluctuate .001 to .012 . Per the manufacturers spec .003 can have up to a .006 variance . I shoot 30.5 inch draw so get to cut off a whopping 1 to 2.5 inches off my arrows . Ive spun quite a few arrows and I've seen way more the .001 in the shafts I've bought and cut . This tool is also good for checking spine dexterity to see if the carbon arrow is breaking down . If they are straight when you build it it should be straight after shooting it a number of times but we all know we hit things in targets pass throughs get stuck in trees and so on so flex but also spin it . It's also good for Broadhead alignment when glueing in inserts to see if it's straight and square . I'm not knocking your video and yes it's a great tool for building a straighter arrow . I like the video but there's more to the numbers on a arrow .

pine Ridge got some lousy reviews on Amazon....doesn't sound like a good quality accurate unit.
