10:49 Literally the last time I was at the rink i was trying to practice backwards skating with my feet in an A-position, but doing a bit of a penguin march. One of the veteran dads skating next to me told me I should skate exactly how you say *not* to skate here! Aside from it being yet another experience of someone 'teaching' (showing off) me something as a newer skater, he was actually wrong! Ha! I almost feel vindicated for my penguin wobbles 😂

Do you get most of your practice in at a rink?
@sherforlife18 ай бұрын
@@t.terrell7037 The skating rink is so busy, I mostly got my practice skating in my basement, parks with basketball courts, and tennis courts. Until I was fully confident, then I started going to the skating rink, especially on days when there were fewer people there, but you can get lessons at the rink to get you more familiar with skating. If you're planning on skating at the parks, make sure you bring a broom with you to clean up debris, and try investing in outdoor skating wheels, which will help you smoothly go over small pebble stones, crack pavements, or broken glasses.

Hi! Long time good footin' it skater, here! Deb, you're cracking me up describing how I've been backward skating since oh, 1981 or so! Ha! So yes, today ends my good footin' it days. I'll be practicing at a rink tonight...and hopefully, no longer looking crazy! And, I'd vote for spinning as it's what gets me in the most trouble with gravity.

I want you to make the video that gets you the most views. I have been watching your videos all year long. THANK YOU.. I bought my first pair of skates(Beach Bunny). It took almost a year for the skates to come back in stock. My safety equipment came in the mail yesterday. I am 57 years old & have lost 105 pounds during the pandemic. I am so excited to try skating. I have not been to a skating rink in over 40 years. I'm not only afraid of falling, I'm afraid to go to a skating rink...SO crazy..... I feel self-conscious. I live in Virginia people can be mean here sometimes.

@@Dirtydeborahharrythanks so much for the great videos!! Do you have any suggestions for inside spaces that may be free to use to get the practice I need on days when the local rinks aren’t open or available? I’m doing it for recreation and exercise now and skating when I was young but I’d eventually like to do some jam or rhythm skating but I need more time to practice other than the public skate times where the rink is crowded. I thought about outside but was worried about excessive falling on concrete as opposed to be in a wood floor. I also tried my school before work but worried I’d get caught by the custodian! Lol 😂😂😂😂. Thank you!

OMG girl, where were you when I was a good footin fool at age 12 in the 80s? I was totally doing that foot work when I roller skated. I'm a pretty good FOWARD skater, but the backward stuff, was a challenge. I would love to get back into this hobby. I think part of the problem was that I taught myself the "good foot" move, at at a very busy roller rink, with 50 other skaters on the floor, all skating in the same direction, and I was trying not to collide with anyone.

Ha- you saved me again! I've been practicing skating backwards by shifting left to right equally. Last night's skate session at the rink in SF had more good skaters and they were mostly using the "goodfoot" method to get around. I thought I was missing out on something. Just in time I checked in to the Dirty School of Skate to get all sorted out again. You're right- it does look a lot better with both feet, and I bet it's easier to skate partner with the back and forth method, too. Request: Transitioning between backward to forward again. Please & thank you.

Follow up - I was feeling a way because I was surely goodfootin it to DEATH. But you hit home with the lack of balance on one foot. I went back to my original skating clips and I could see that I wasn't pushing off with my toe on my R leg because I wasn't steady enough on my left. I practiced going forwards on one foot a couple seconds at a time... and well.. you saw the last clip I sent you. True growth is in the practice and the in between and the improvement feels amazing. Thank you again for everything you give us.

I gotta give you a big THANK YOU, Deborah. A few weeks ago I had a chance to check out the super nice multi-use trails in Longview, Texas. Since I’m normally a rink skater, skating outdoors on a rougher surface that has hills was a little scary. As usual, I had your voice in my head coaching me along the way. So when the inevitable wipeout happened, I was totally prepared for it and did not get hurt. A cyclist saw my “fancy trick” and stopped to make sure I was okay. After I thanked her and told her that I was fine & that falls are just a part of skating, she told me she was impressed and that I took the fall much better than she could. I chuckled and told her that I’ve practiced falling a lot. 😂 If it hadn’t been for all of your awesome lessons, I probably would have faceplanted on the concrete instead of steering my fall into the nice, soft grass at the edge of the trail. ✌🏼💜🛼

Spinning on toes if poss and footwork next please. Not sure what you mean by footwork but it sounds interesting! I am by no means an expert in backwards yet but I am getting better and have been working on backwards crossovers for some time now. I sometimes have beginners asking how to skate backwards when they can’t skate forwards well either. I show them stepped drills to do that helped me but many don’t have the patience for all of that. I have also found that off skate exercises have been helpful to build strength and balance esp for my up and coming side. Keep up the good work Deb, you really are making a difference.
